    Being a quad core this is a great main router for aimesh wifi 5 if you've got older devices ie. rt-ac68u

    I'm getting 600mbit almost everywhere on a gigabit connection with 1 x rt-ax56u and 2 x rt-ac68u and I didn't pay much for my second ac68u ~$80 and the ax56u I got off ebay for $120

    This setup provides very stable wifi and I'm very happy with it but my needs have changed and I need a bit more features so I'm biting on the GT-AX6000 especially VPN fusion looks interesting for incoming and outgoing connections and is not yet supported on the RT-AX56U which unfortunately only has firmware 388.1

    388.2 is required for wireguard VPN so best to go for the GT-AX6000 if you're future proofing

    If the RT-AX56U gets 388.2 that would be one ridiculously crazy value router for what it can do … tempted to get another one just in case it does!

    I think I'll try full wifi 6 with 1 x GT-AX6000 and 1 x RT-AX56U but I may need the extra coverage so will wait for a cheap wifi 6 aimesh (which happens to be the $65 AX53U) :)

    Bought this for main router to mesh with the $65 Asus deal. Thanks OP.

    I wonder which version of the RT-AX56U this is. The main images now show the V2 (4 antennas, same as RT-AX55) while the manufacturer description section has the V1 (2 antennas). It could still be the V1 though since the RT-AX55 is a separate selectable option and the V2 might be region specific (China).

    Which version have people been receiving from recent purchases?

    The V2 is different enough, arguably a downgrade from the V1, that it might be worth going for the RT-AX53U deal instead if the router isn't going to be pushed for performance.

    RT-AX56U V1
    * 2 external antennas
    * 4 core, 1.5GHz
    * 256MB flash, 512MB RAM
    * 2.4GHz 2x2, 5GHz 2x2
    * 1x RJ45 WAN, 4x RJ45 LAN
    * 1x USB 2.0, 1x USB 3.1 Gen 1
    * Merlin firmware supported, (Merlin supported devices)

    RT-AX56U V2 (RT-AX55)
    * 4 external antennas
    * 4 core, 1.5GHz
    * 128MB flash, 256MB RAM
    * 2.4GHz 2x2, 5GHz 2x2
    * 1x RJ45 WAN, 4x RJ45 LAN
    * No USB ports
    * Merlin firmware not supported, (SNB Forums comparing versions)

      Pretty sure it's just an image issue. The 4 antenna one is definitely the RT-AX55, and the 2 antenna is the RT-AX56U

      • Yep, received a RT-AX56U (2 antenna), H/W Ver.: 1.0, Production Year: 2022.

  • According to one of the comments, it was sold for $115 during Black Friday Sales.

      If you read carefully he said 55 this is 56.diff model

        you are right. My bad

  • Can anyone comment on what the speeds are like with a VPN?
    I currently have the 68U on merlin and looking at getting something else that will help boost those speeds a little.

  • All of the configs are great but of it says only 10-15 devices. Which is good for 30-40 devices? ( all smart appliances )

  • Can someone help list down the most significant differences between this and RT-AX58U experience as main router? I am looking between these 2 and unable to decide.

  • How the hell RT-AC68U is more expensive ($374) this this RT-AX56U router?

  • +3

    Back online at $149

    I was going to re-post but the rules say less than 3 months old

    This has been an awesome secondary router for AiMesh

  • Whats the range on this like? Would it exceed my netcomm nf18acv?

    • It's just OK similar to an RT-AC68U
      Have a look at the mbreviews reviews on both of them
      I agree with those figures about 200mbit at 10m with a 2x2 client which is OK for an entry-level router
      The GT-AX6000 that's a whole different ball game 600mbit at 10m

      If you don't need AX I'd just pump old RT-AC68U's in AiMesh mode connected by ethernet I did that and I got similar performance to the best of them

      • I currently get patchy wifi at just about 4-5m (bathroom between rooms) so if the 56u can be better than that it would be great.

        • +1

          Yes that was my experience when I replaced family member's default router nf18acv due to wifi issues

          An AC66 or AC68 wasn't perfect but at least they could get a reasonable signal 10m away in the back rooms

          Eventually settled on ethernet cabled ubiquiti AP's though since I got a cheap deal at the time on the AC Lites and there was a guy coming to do the TV's and ethernet anyway so figured I get it all sorted for good and really have never had a complaint ever :)

          Asus is good if you can fix issues not always just set and forget and I had no interest being wifi support man

  • I am using RT-AC66U for a long time. It is a stable router but requires reboot sometimes. The Wifi 2.4Ghz range is poor.
    This RT-AX56U AX1800 looks like a good deal and also with Merlin support. Will this be any better (specially Wifi range) than RT-AC66U?

  • saw the $65 AX53, didn't buy thinking I didn't need it. A few days later the old Huawei router started having issues T.T This is the next best thing I could find. There are some cheaper TP link router but it seems like ASUS is preferred on ozbargain

    Price is down to $139 and I couldn't resist the purchase!

    • +1

      Nice find! I’m unable to report this deal any more. Could someone report the price change?

    • +1

      Same :)

      My ac68u has been acting up, this looks the perfect merlin compatible stop-gap before I invest in something wifi7 a year down the track or so. Hopefully gets 388.2 eventually so that I can just run stock / vpn fusion, but not fussed if it doesn't for this price!

      $140 seems to be a very fair price for this router - the reviews seem good as well.

      Must be too good to be true in some way?

      There's AX3000 netgear routers on sale for the same price, but the reviews are bad - Asus seems to be the way to go for networking.
