  • A good one for laptop since it is not running hot in a limited space.

  • +2

I note they take a lot of care to get the specs right.

    Connectivity technology: SATA
    Batteries: one lithium-ion battery required
Language: English, English, English, English, English

    • +2

As Henry Ford once said: "You can have any language you want, so long as it's English."

  • Thanks for the tech breakdown. I was always confused by the differences between drives.

First deal for the SN700, this drive goes for $250+ locally
Ultra high 2000 TB endurance and extremely fast sustained write speeds (faster than many Gen 4 drives) makes this one of the best drives for NAS, RAID and content creation setups

Custom WD controller optimised for workstation and 24/7 workloads
This drive runs hot due to the write-optimised design so consider a heatsink mandatory

    • Oooo 2tb would have been nice for sub 300$ i would have picked uo for my NAS, 2PB endurence for this 1TB is fantastic its a shame i dont need it but i woukd have picked this up a month ago for this price. Thanks for sharing

    • +1

I dont get the fuss, I bought two of these for my little NAS
      https://www.umart.com.au/product/silicon-power-1tb-p34a60-ge…
      And it works just fine.

      • +1

Personally I wouldn't buy this for a NAS, seems like a waste of potential. In fact I only use mechanical drives in my nas. This drive would be more suitable for desktop usage imo, and mainly either as a boot drive + applications and/or a task where lots of data needs to be moved constantly

        • These are good for high write load databases and bulk log ingestion. Not exactly general purpose needs, but nice to have a cheap option that supports a good thrashing.

        • My NAS usages are low. im not a heavy user.
i did over spec my nas. 4x nvme and 4x spinny disk slots
3x 1tb nvme (plus one empty slot right now) and all spinny disks slots empty. Waiting for some handme down hdds to put in the big 3tb of photos

      • The main difference is that the silicon power one is a dramless design, and has a lower TBW for warranty purposes.

Yours is 600TBW, this one is 2000TBW.

        • aaah.

          • @FoxJump: There's also a deal up right now for the WD Blue SN570, which would be a much closer analogue to what you have. The price difference is smaller there, so arguably you'd be paying for the brand and different choice in flash manufacturer and controller. (If one researched and had a bias towards those things.)

            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/746685

It's even got the same TBW listed.

            • @Namidairo: Yes i would have preferred WD blue but it was 1 week too late.
i have 2x of those cheapy ones and 1x samsung 860 or so that was in my intel NUC before.

        • for an extra $50 more than double the life! good value if you're planning on writing that much data.

        • which is why I bought the Silicon Power 1TB A34A80 for $114.99 (from Amazon) - it has 1665 TBW and same read speeds as the WD RED.

      • follow up - and now one of those two is dead :/

    • Can this be directly inserted into ps5

      • +1

        I don't think PS5 supports gen 3 drives

        • +1

That's correct, PS5 only supports Gen 4 drives at the moment

    • +1

How is warranty on WD M.2s that are Amazon UK/US via AU handled? :)

    • +1

thanks OP, bought 2 for my NAS

    • +1

I'm surprised they dont use MLC on these, I miss the 970 Pros. I think they're last consumer based MLC that was ever released.

    • What is best for system + gaming performance without breaking my wallet?

  • Would these go well in a Synology NAS for SSD cache?

    • Idk, ive got two simple nvme ssds for my qnap, as well as 1 speedy one.
they both top out at around 800Mb/s so .. its kinda meh the super high speeds these mention.

  • +4

It's not a deal for one, and barely a deal for two (unless you need delivery for two).

Umart and Scorptec both $119 with additional $20 gift card redemption.

    • Wasn’t aware of the promotion. The drive I bought yesterday is eligible! Thanks for sharing👏👊

  • How’s Amazon’s warranty for purchases from UK/US? Anyone has any experience with RMA/warranty claims?

    • Yeh. If you have an issue contact CS and request a return and return label. In your in a city, it will just be using ParcelPoint or Rural, you will need to pay the postage and claim it back from Amazon. As for timeframes, once received (I've only done US), it can take upto 45 days to process refund. I whinged to CS and they refunded me around 7 days after they received it.

More work than a local return, but Amazon are generally good. I have returned around 5 items now back to the USA for defects reasons. I even returned a leptop recently after having it for 2 years (1 year out of warranty) as I have a known design flaw with it and couldn't get local support (I don't think amazon give a stuff)

      • +1

I have a known design flaw with it and couldn't get local support

Yea Amazon is insane when it comes to customer support. I've experience items where it's out of warranty but was willing to pay for a repair/replacement at a slightly cheaper cost and Amazon just says "nope, just return it and we'll refund full price lol".

  • Is this better than the Kingston nv2 or is it same same?

    • +2

Depends. With Kingston NV2 1TB, you probably want to get one from a local retailer (for ~$96) as that gives you a better chance to get Phison E21 based model (but no guarantee though). NV2 technically supports PCIe gen 4 so it could be used in PS5. It has a larger dynamic SLC cache than SN570. The not so good parts about NV2:

      • Warranty is only 3 years and TBW is lower.
      • You won't be able to get the type of performance Techpowerup reported (even if you get E21 model).
      • Amazon was selling SM2267XT for ~$82, but you had to buy 2 or buy a dummy bookmark for $6 (E21 model is better though).
      • For 2TB model, it is very hard to get E21 model, you will most likely end up with SM2267XT. It will also be harder to get E21 model for 1TB eventually.

Kingston seems to have done something in the firmware so NV2 Phison E21 doesn't out-perform SM2267XT by too much. If you only have PCIe gen 3 and/or it is for a laptop, then SN570 is probably a better choice. However, SN570 is still a crippled SSD (WD's old SN550 batch was superior, but after being caught changing the NAND in the newer batch, WD released SN570, and I guess at this price, it does ease the pain of still subpar sustained write).

In short, neither is great, and at this price, you need to decide what type of compromises you are willing to accept.

      • Thanks, it'll just be a second drive to install games on. Stick to Kingston I guess.
