is this a bot?
I'm looking are building a mid level machine but I notice most motherboards come with only 2 dimms. Why? I need 64gb ram, probably heavier than the op but sometimes run virtual machines. Any thoughts?
You’re looking at ITX mobos probably. Or the cheapest of the cheap ones.
Just buy 32GB ram sticks. 2x32GB = 64GB
You need a mid tier B model motherboard or better for 4 DIMMs.
2x32GB is the better choice unless you're carrying over old ram
Plus with 2x32GB you will have an option of an easier upgrade to 128GB if necessary.
I'd still select a motherboard with 4 DIMMs since you (top poster) are already looking for 64GB system.
Anyone know what IC's these use? Any O/C headroom?
Support Intel only not AMD?
Actually, if you are going with something like 12400F, this would need to be underclocked to be within spec or would technically be overclocking ram as it supports up to 3200Mhz as stock
Single or double channel? (I'm not well up on all the RAM specs). Assume would be ok in my ageing MSi Z17A mobo? TIA.
it's two ram sticks, which can be used as dual - not familliar with your mobo but you need to install it correctly to allow dual channel by reading your manual to check its supported and which slots to put it in (normally there is a space between them if you have 4 slots)
Thanks. I should have checked Scorptec website! Dual Channel. Yes, got 4 slots. Will remove old 2 x 8 2400 MHz sticks.
Is this compatible with AMD 5600?
Your mobo is more the compatability issue. But yes, they are comptable with the AMD 5600.
Have a look at pcpartpicker - put in your system then add the RAM, any general comptability issues with automatically flag.
Or go to your mobo specs page and check for compatability there.
These can come in both single and dual ranks.
