I was interested until I saw it was released in 2015

  • +2

Out of support with iPadOS 16 now but still a very useful little device at a good price.

    • Yeah you don't need the latest OS to use this thing. It's more than enough for kid games or reading news on the go.

      • +13

Only if you never intend to update any of the apps

        • +1

or have any security at all

  • +2

Good for youtube sort of thing

  • A great kindle

    • +9

I know it's tongue in cheek but you're probably better off getting a kindle for reading. E-ink is so much better than LED screen for prolonged reading

      • But can kindle use libby/overdrive?

        • +4

          Kobo can

          • @StayCheesy: And I assume Kobo locks out my Kindle books.

            Damn my fractured ebook collection!

            • @dbmitch: You can still get them on with Adobe digital editions from memory. It's easier to use Calibre to manage everything

              • @Jackson: What is this wizardly you speak of :o

                • +4

@dbmitch: ADE is the ancient manual way to plug in your ereader and copy over an ebook from a store that your reader isn't natively connected with that device, for books that have DRM.

Calibre is a freeware book management software the idea is that you can get books from all over the place, it even has a a store aggregator so you can get the best price. It's much easier when books don't have DRM tho

                  • +1

@Jackson: Dope, I'll check it out and play around with it so I can fix up my multiple platforms into one!

  • +1

it's probably on the list of Apple unsupported devices or will be soon. Too old for pretty much everyone.

  • +3

Pretty timely. Was talking about this yesterday. Very handy to have in cross country navigational flying. However, not sure if no support for iOS16 is any issue.

    • +2

I mean, my brother is still using an unsupported iPhone and it works perfectly well. Probably the same with iPads

      • it works perfectly well

until there's an exploit and your brother's personal and financial information and photos are all over the place, yeah, it'll work great :)

        • When has that happened?

          • -2

            @1Kenobi: "iOS jailbreak"
            "Safari exploit"

Google is your friend. Don't make me pull out the LMGTFY link.

Security updates are a thing for a reason, or did you think Apple did them for fun?

            • @Zorlin: Sure send me a news link showing any widespread loss of financial information based on this as i couldnt see any

              • -3

@1Kenobi: Hilarious joke. You should be a comedian.

Sure, let's find a widespread event based on individual people failing to update their devices. That totally makes sense. I think, actually, you should be a computer scientist.

    • +1

Was thinking same. Maybe message the two local EFB companies and ask their opinion. They're pretty responsive so hopefully you'll get an answer before sale ends/ sold out.

    • +2

These are not Apple refurbs. They are third party refurbs, which means the battery will not be new.

EFB apps use a lot of battery as they are constantly using GPS and you usually have the screen on at full brightness. Having a good battery is really important.

I run AvPlan on a 9.7 inch iPad Pro and recently had a battery "swap" done by Apple (i.e. they gave me a refurb device with a new battery and took my old device). The old device would die after about 2 hours of flying - this happened once while I was doing an instrument approach! With a new battery it gets easily 4 hours or more.

I would avoid this particular one and either buy new or from the Apple refurbished store.

      • A lot of the time refurbs require new battery that is equal to 80% of an refurb version (from Australian stores only!), but Best to check with the Store!

    • Was thinking the same thing, but i think you really want to have something a bit more current.

Maybe OK as a backup, but probably easier to just get a newer Android for the same price and run RWY.

  • It’s be alright for kids, mine still use it

  • +1

Shame they don't have the non cellular for a good hundred bucks or so less. Then it would be almost considerable.

  • -8

I think I got mine at this price 5 years ago, new as well.

  • -1

Tempted to downgrade my 6th gen mini, currently on 2 month loan until near the end of the extended holiday return period. Ha.

  • +1

well refurb means its not apple getting the money

  • +1

I have older iPad which is damn slow. I don’t recommend even for kids. It’s better to buy some other tablet which is around the same price but new models.

  • i have 2 ipad mini 1 at home, updated with the latest firmware, and i couldn't do anything. any idea how i can make use of these

  • +2

I have one as my go to Manga reader

  • +1

Sweet, purchased. Thanks OP. My son has a first gen iPad Mini and while it works fine, we can’t install new apps.

    • +1

      Enjoy :)

    • The Gen 1 iPad mini was released in 2012. This is the Gen 4 iPad Mini which was released in 2015. Why not buy the Gen 9 iPad which was released in 2021 instead? Yes it's $200 more but it should last you much longer than this and perform significantly faster.

      • +1

It’s for my five year old and the iPad Mini size is perfect for him.

    • -1

you will regret this, when you can't update the apps
and the apps won't work without an update

      • +1

I doubt it. My son’s original Mini can only run iOS 9. The Mini 4 should be able to run iPadOS 14.
He’s only five years old so he doesn’t need cutting edge tech like me ;)

        • -1

          not about cutting edge.

e.g. lots of kids like youtube etc
youtube app has been known to stop working without latest update…

I have experience this on an older ipad,
which can't play youtube app and all you get is a nag screen to update.

ipad 9th gen is only about $200 more
but you get longer updates than this.

          • @pinkybrain: The YouTube and YouTube Kids app works fine on our 1st gen iPad Mini.
I can’t download newer apps but my son just uses YouTube and YouTube Kids most of the time anyway.
As I explained above, the regular sized iPad is not suitable.

        • It can actually run iPadOS 15, so you'll be right for a few years just using basic apps.

      • Not true, because the appstore still works fine, games still get compiled for support on older devices (ie not ios 16 only) for a long time. Plus if your kid wrecks it in a year anyway, then what?

        • -1

          yes it is true,

to get the latest update on some apps/games (popular ones) you need a minimum fw version
if you are not on it, you can only download the older version

  • how's this for reading eggs? could I still get Netflix Stan Disney+ and the other main steaming apps on it?

I just got my eldest (5yrs) an iPad 9th gen but my 2yr old keeps fighting for it as well.

will mainly be used for reading eggs and streaming kids shows

    • +1

Reading Eggs runs fine on mine. Same for Netflix. I've been having trouble with the VPN app and YouTube, lately, but that's mostly because its running iOS10, to keep playing some older games.

  • +1

Got one, thanks! Needed to update our time clock system at work and this is perfect.

  • +1

Too old for 2022. I remember wanting this iPad back in 2016. I was so impressed by how powerful it was in such a small size.

Now in 2022, to put it simply, it has the same chipset as the iPhone 6 (Apple A8), just overclocked to 1500mhz instead of 1400mhz. Even the iPad Air 2 from 2014 has an A8X which is a triple-core version of this chipset. My iPad Pro 10.5" 256GB from 2017 has an A10X which according to benchmarks is ~4x quicker than the Mini 4, yet I purchased it for $375 used with 2 years warranty (CeX).

Not a good purchase in my opinion. This iPad is outdated.

    • agreed.

the 9th gen is only about $200 more on past deals.

  • I'm really keen to purchase the new iPad Mini 256gb wifi and cellular. The cheapest atm seems to be $1207. Should i pull the pin and purchase or do you think one of the third party retailers may reduce even further?

    • iPad Mini 256g = $1207.

that is overpriced when you can get the normal size ones for around that price or cheaper.

cellular is not a big necessity since you can use wifi or connect it to your phone etc.
