7Hz Salnotes Zero IEM US$17.99 (~A$25.18) Delivered @ Linsoul Audio

320

If you're familiar with the Moondrop Chu, this is a Chu with even better tuning, and a detachable cable (a good quality one at that). Better quality bass with a little more kick, lower treble peak is gone. Chu probably has more comfortable stock tips, but said Spring tips also mess with the bass quality.

Both suffer from lacking a tiny bit in the lower mids and the mid-treble, but at this price point they're still #1 and #2 unless you like Final Audio's house sound and can score an E3000 for $30-$40. Normally this is priced at $33-$35, so it's a solid discount.

If you want a cheap IEM that's really good, this is it. Enjoy!

Also fulfilled by Amazon for $3.60 more in most colourways if you want a faster shipment.

Exactly what I was after, thank you.

    Review for anyone wondering.

I really don't need another pair of Headphones or IEMs, but damnit… $25 AUD? I'm in.

  • +1

    These sound very good!

  • I've gamed with these and they are good. Bought some for friends and they like them too.
Shipping from Linsoul took approx 2 weeks. I also bought some mic cables but found them to be crap

  • +1

Linsoul currently running a promotion right now with 70USD credit for 35USD.

$28.79 on Amazon if you do not want to wait.

      • Does the Amazon come with a mic? Looks like it in the photo but can't tell.

    • To be fair that price is available for Prime members only.

But yeah I would pay the extra $3 for quick shipping and great after sales service.

    • Great deal esp if you stack it with tomorrow's 15% cashback from cashrewards

  • I've got these and as a budget set they're unbeatable. Chu's are great too.

  • Will these have a hissing sound if I plug them into my phone?

    • Depends on phone. No issues with my Xperia 5 II.

For $20 more, I recommend the KZ ZS10

    4BA + 1DD

    • +1

Ahhh the more the merrier. Get the ones with 16 of them 😅

    • +2

For $20 more I recommend tipping Linsoul for the Zero. KZ reference curve is awful, and that is a slapped together multi-BA IEM. I mean I'm not a frequency response purist, but what the f*** is this?

      There are better options.

    • avoid all cheap KZ at all cost.
i have ZSX pro, it is shit.

      • I have the original ZSNs and am very happy with it especially considering the price - you can find plenty of people who'd recommend the ZS10 and ZSN variants, so it must be a difference in taste.

  • What bluetooth cable do people recommend to go with this?

  • These sound better than wireless iems that are 10x the price? Been a while since I looked into wired IEMs

Tuning wise? Yes it's possible. Technicalities, not everything from the last 4 years, but that in of itself is value.

What do you have existing? At $90 you can get a Moondrop Aria Snow (Dynamic Driver) on Amazon, at $220 you can get a Moondrop Kato (DD) on Amazon, at $230ish you should be able to get a 7Hz Timeless (Planar Driver) on AliExpress with cashbacks and codes.

You can eke things out a little further to maybe the Moondrop Blessing 2 (4BA+1DD) at $400 on AliE with all those stacks (or gift card + cashback on Amazon), but it's more marginal against the Kato and the Timeless, and if you don't like fairly flat bass you're paying another $100 for the Dusk variant.

That's a good shortlist for well-tuned neutral IEMs that have elite technical performance for their driver setup and price point.

      • Thanks, great info. I have galaxy buds and freebuds pro. Will check those out

        • Unless you mean the Buds Live, I'd send you straight to the Timeless as your next upgrade point.

  • Same price on aliexpress

All the reputable sellers I'm looking at have it at $26 before tax, and that won't trigger a site code. This is $25 delivered.

  • what's the difference between these and proper earphones?

    • +2

IEMs are a type of earphones, as in a sound device that fits inside your ear, and more specifically in that case inside your ear canal. The other key type of earphones are earbuds - a term which marketing teams now use to describe IEMs - that are the classic style of earphone, which does not seal inside your ear canal but rather sits atop it.

Earbuds sound more open with virtually no isolation, but tend to have lower sound quality, and have lost favour as IEMs have become more affordable.

If you were thinking of headphones, that's a whole other thing entirely. :P

    • +1

Some benefits of IEMs (in-ear monitors):
      - Smaller form factor, easier to travel with and throw in your backpack/pocket (and not look silly when out and about).
      - No need for DACs or amps since they require very little power (the $15 apple lightning adapter is fine for even $1000+ IEMs).
      - Comfort. This is subjective, but I personally prefer IEMs as my head doesn't get hot and sweaty due to the pads on my ears, or sore from the pressure of the headband. Some people don't like IEMs however as they can exert pressure inside the ear-canal after a while. This largely depends on the model and ear tips you use.
      - Noise isolation - You get a level of noise isolation due to the seal of the IEM. While closed-back over-ear headphones will give a decent amount of isolation as well, a lot of the popular headphones are open (meaning the ear is open to the air, letting sound in and your music out). A lot of the reason people go with over-ear headphones is due to a wider soundstage (sounds from different sides of the ears appear wider or more separated apart, as if the band were playing in front of you), but closed back headphones do not have as wide a soundstage as open-back, so you lose one of the major benefits of getting over-ear headphones if you go closed-back for noise-isolation.

These IEMs are a perfect entrypoint if you want to see if you like the form factor, and this brand is one of the most popular in the cheap IEM market and make great gear.

        "- Noise isolation"

I want to point out for some people noise isolation might be a negative.

For me I prefer the non in ear type because it allows a decent amount of external sound in. Which is better for me if I am walking out and about or even indoors when someone is calling your name etc.
It's less of an issue if you live alone or riding public transport etc because you don't need to be so aware of surrounding noises. But yeah I prefer having some external noise enter if I am going to be listening.
When I tried in ears, I would have to take them out every time I thought I need to be able to hear more external noise. And would often not notice someone wanted my attention until they came right up to me and I saw them.

  • Thanks OP, I'm always up for good priced earphones. Reckon it's worth adding the Tripowin Grace Mic Cable for another USD 10? Should be a good upgrade from my Taotronics SoundLiberty 97 in terms of sound. I've had many complaints when trying to call people while walking on the road with my SoundLibertys… I wonder if the Salnotes will perform any differently with the mic cable? Probably, given that I'd be closer to your mouth?

    • +1

I'm not a cable hound, but my understanding is the basic cable is solid.

Mic wise, it's always going to be flimsy unless it's a very solid MEMS mic and the audio processing for noise removal is good, and the latter is dictated by the phone in today's technology.

While copper cable vs silver can have minor tonal impact due to the low impedance of most IEMs, I'd be ensuring competency and picking for comfort.

      • +1

Thanks mate - went with the basic offering without mic cable. In any case, as it's detatchable, you can get a mic or bluetooth cable at any point aftwards. Also same brand of mic cable seems to be cheaper on Amazon.

  • Should I upgrade from Moondrop Chu's ??

    • +2

I'd aim for a bigger upgrade down the line, this would be marginal.

    • There is like a 15% off prices on Amazon so would consider Arias or the Starfields as an upgrade.

      • Which are better? Arias or Starfields?

        • TruthEar HEXA now.

  • I got it a few days ago and I really don't understand the hype and don't know why people can do that details review as it's not that special. Its sound quality just like (or maybe a little bit better) a original AKG Samsung headphone, that's it.

    • +1

Tonally it should be a fair bit less v-shaped, but yes, you're right in terms of technical performance. The key point is that any IEM under $40 tends to sound like total crap, and this doesn't.
