  • Has an internal MicroSD that's replaceable, but it's more effort than for the Clara HD for example.

It's glued down and there's some coating over the entire board, so soak it in some alcohol and be prepared for some very careful wriggling for quite some time. Eventually with much, much persistence it'll come loose.

Transfer to new MicroSD (512 GB here), use gparted to resize, install KOReader, etc., etc. Just be aware that if the native firmware doesn't like the state of the filesystem (as might happen on particularly bad unmounts) it'll reformat the whole thing, so between this and general common sense most of the time I just use SFTP from a known good mirror copy of its contents that doubles as a backup.

This or pay slightly more for Kindle Oasis ($280)?

    • +3

      Cons:

      • 8 GB of storage on the Kindle Oasis only at that price point
      • No USB-C port
      • Amazon firmware is worse than Kobo's, but with KOReader the difference disappears
      • Seriously not repairable (battery, storage, anything)

      Pros:

      • Has Bluetooth/Audible
      • Somewhat lighter

      Pretty much the same:

      • Size
      • Screen
      • Speed/battery life/everything else
      • "Water-proof"

Cant recommend Boox readers enough. I have a kindles & Kobos and wont go back. they run native android, work with high capacity microsd, runs Library ebook and audiobook apps (overdrive, kindle reader ect..), copy ebooks to and from my nas via smb: Best comic\Manga reader support, even sail the high seas on my Boox with utorrent.

    • How do you think it will compare to the new Kindle Scribe?
I was using ipad for note taking during meetings etc but its wasted since I do everything else on my iphone.

So I'm looking for eink tablet purely for note taking during meetings etc and for reading ebooks

Would you recommend any line up from Boox for my purpose?

      Thanks

    • Never heard of them so did a quick google - too many options lol! They’ve got every possible user covered - which one did you buy?

      Tell me more…
Can you side load with these.
What other pros cons over kobos do they have

Interesting. Just looked it up. Where did you buy it from? Hardly Normal have some models for a pretty preem price

It's basicly an android tablet with playstore but with a eink display, I have the Nova colour and Nova Air 2. The display on the color isnt the greatest, but ok for comics but wouldnt recommend it. stick with B&W. They are faster than other readers likely due to the beafier cpu and more ram required to run android. Battery life is the only downside so far I can go weeks without charging my kindle I will get 2 weeks on my nova air and a week on the colour with heavy use. still way better and way lighter than a LCD tablet. Not having to use a PC to transfer books and the ability to download books from my local library directly on device is a real bonus. I also sync all by ebook library to google books (free online unlimited storage). Watching video in VLC on a eink display is possible but less than fluid. work with bluetooth headsets and wired headphones, test2speach apps are also better on android

  • Thanks for this. Cheapest alternative I saw was 269 on Amazon. I will monitor this over next few days and pull the trigger if no other promos come up.

Same here. So dad i missed the amazon sale on july where it went for 215or something. Looking at past deals, this is not the greatest but never know when we will see another deal again.

Heads up! Shopback cashback on ebay on friday 8pm - 11:59pm. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/740423
If you use ebay code, you get 10% cashback with a cap of $20, so this deal would end up being $215!!

Thank you! That's not half bad!

      • Mate went to buy it, only white ones left! So annoying! :(

        • Yeah, black was out of stock 30 minutes before the what cashback began. Still bought it with discounted gift cards, extra bonus cashback and all. The final price should be something like $198 or so.

I'm still monitoring the eBay page to see if they restock the black one. Maybe I'll reach out to the seller and said i made a mistake and ask for colour to be switched

@pichxlonco: I thought of that too - it does say Sydney Mobiles but he has a relatively low rating of 98.7% so not sure what our luck would be like. Would white be that bad though? Maybe not. I'd probably get a case for it anyway. Woke up thinking I may just buy the white one.

I did notice the Oasis on sale for 299 as well which is about in par with this device but I'm now set in my head to have at least one thing away from Amazon.

            • @b2dz: I totally get it. I've stayed away from Amazon as well, as Kobo allows me to sideload my books which i get from "alternative" sources. White doesn't seem that bad, it might get a but dirty, but I'll just use a baby wipe to clean it if that happens. I'm looking for a case now so i might go with a dark colour to make it less shiny.
