Surely there is the option to run software on android/Google TV OS instead of a physical camera.

    • +1

Are there any APIs in Android that allow apps to monitor video in signals in the background? That’s the question you really should be asking.

    • +2

      Any processing will add latency.
I have one of these and it works great. The camera is not really noticeable.

      • Philips TVs have done it well for years

    • There's an app called Hue Essentials which works with ZigBee lights such as Philips hue and IKEA Tradfi, most streaming services block it from working (the app basically uses screen recording APIs and they are naturally blocked for streaming apps). The real issue though is the performance, on a Chromecast with Google TV it gets to a complete crawl with even 1080p YouTube videos.

Next option is Philips Hue Ambilight box, which is a HDMI box that sits between a HDMI input and TV and intercepts all video signals that come through there, the box is expensive and it'll only work on external devices and not built in TV apps or live TV.

It's called a Philips Ambilight TV lol
Their OLEDs are the cheapest around with an LG panel too

Apologies for botching the name, it's called "Philips Hue Play Sync Box":
        https://www.amazon.com.au/Philips-Hue-Surround-Entertainment…

Similar to their TVs Ambilight system, I got the two confused.

        • You didn't botch the name, I was replying to someone else and bringing up their Philips Ambilight TV range which is basically built-in Hue :)

          • @Techie4066: Righto, anyways I always get confused with the comments reply section in OZBargain as to which is for which 😅

            • @OpayuOnam: You can emulate the Sync Box and use Hue Essentials to do the same without the box. I have 2 Hue Play and 2 Hue Go which sync without the (expensive) Sync Box. Works well.

              • +1

@sini180: My comment opened with Hue Essentials and elaborated on how it is not a perfect solution, both from how much processing power it needs as well as it not working with most paid streaming services.

Theres an upgrade on this now with 2 cameras and more leds per metre.

    • That does not include any ability to sync with what's on the screen. Your link is just a light. It's a good price for the light (and I will probably get another one). If you already have the Hue Sync box (which is currently on sale for $400) then probably.

      • Thanks, if no need to sync just want some backlight on TV, is this Philips bright enough?

        • It depends if you want mood lighting or proper bias lighting.

For mood lighting, I currently use 3 behind a 75" TV, two standing vertically on each side and one lying flat in the middle. If I got around to it I'd mount that one up on the TV so it throws the light a bit higher. But otherwise it's fine, it adds a nice glow effect to the wall around the TV even when the TV isn't on. And I do like having them on at night when watching in a dark room. LED strips stuck around the TV would undoubtably be brighter, but I like the current effect that I have.

          • @Astronaut Joe: Thanks in that case I will skip, I just want some backlight.

At the moment I just use a LED desktop light point up at the back of the TV.

  • +2

I had a similar setup for a TV on a stand, not mounted, and the effect is diluted to the point it's almost pointless. I would only recommend for mounted TVs
