The best price yet for the ASUS RT-AX55. It's a solid performer for just $114.92 and I've personally been using it as a secondary mesh node for my main ASUS AX-88U router.

The AX55 is an entry level Wifi6 capable router featuring a quad-core 1.5GHz Broadcom BCM6755KFEBG, 256MB of RAM, and a Broadcom BCM54991E for the eth switch. It's got most of the features you want out of a Wifi 6 router including ASUS Aimesh, OFDMA, MU-MIMO, and beamforming, but it only has 80mhz channel bandwidth, no Merlin firmware support and no USB ports.

AX1800 Dual Band WiFi 6 (802.11ax) Router supporting MU-MIMO and OFDMA technology, with AiProtection Classic network security powered by Trend Micro™, compatible with ASUS AiMesh WiFi system

    Quite low dbm tests, sadly.
    Also no Merlin or OpenWRT.
Asus make good stock firmware though, so thats a plus.

The ax-53U is on sale, for openwrt support

Had it in my basket for a few days ($153) then figured I'd wait for black Friday. Past midnight I checked Amazon to see if they had started their black Friday sales and boom reduced to $114. Ordered it right away. Always satisfying when it works out that way.

  • Is this better than the AX-53U?

    • Wondering the same. What would be better for mesh?

RT-AX54HP will be $89 @ JB in a few days

  • Can it do android usb tether

  • Thanks OP

  • I'm looking for something to use as a wireless access point for my Quest 2 for AirLink. Would this do the job?

    • +1

You can possibly get away with something even cheaper but Wifi 6 should be bare minimum. Yes the ASUS router here will do the job fine, I use it for Quest airlink also but it's not so great in Mesh as it adds latency. It's best to connect your gaming computer with an ethernet cable to the router.

      For example

  • would it be a wise move to replace rt-ac68u with this one?

    • I replaced my old DSL-68U (it was configured as a mesh node) with the AX-55 and it was an improvement in overall speed — Oculus Quest 2 stream went from unplayable to half-decent.

      Not sure about range.

But remember you can keep using your old ASUS router as a mesh node and use it to extend your wifi, don't throw it away.

  • Weird that this and ax54hp don't have usb port?

    • Why? Plenty of more expensive models don't either

  • I’m new to nbn. Can I get this as byo to my isp to connect to nbn hfc?

    • +1

You can use any router you like with HFC NBN, but your cable modem must remain in place.

  • Damn price gone upz looking for router to replace old Archer c7 for fttp gigabit connection.

    • Just get the ax53u for $89. Got one yesterday works well
