What Kind of Milk Do You Put in Your Coffee?

I used to use normal cow’s milk, but currently I’m using Bonsoy, recommended by a friend. The first time I tried bonsoy I thought it was nearly as good as cow’s milk. Now that my taste buds have adjusted to Bonsoy, cow’s milk tastes weird (sour).

Oat milk tastes ok but doesn’t froth well. The interesting thing about Bonsoy is that it doesn’t have any added oil, and despite being quite low in fat, it still produces excellent foam. Aldi’s soy milk is not bad as a cheap substitute for Bonsoy, and Vitasoy is OK. I’m not a fan of almond milk. Haven’t tried anything else.

You left off skim milk - my choice but doubt I get it.

  • +1

Bonsoy preferred but the price is just too much for the daily coffee - I actually really like Woolies soy milk for general use. Yes, it's not amazing for coffee, but if you have strong coffee (less milk) then it's great for the cheap price.

    • Just guy it on sale, regularly dropped to $3-3.40 on Amazon. A litre does about 4-5 days so I Think it's alright if you have one a day. Cheaper than buying one coffee out. Iong blacks go alright the rest of the time.

Plenty of plant based options these days.. oat milk has a gentle taste and bit cheaper too.

  • +1

Lactose free cow’s milk. Whatever brand is cheapest. Usually just the Coles UHT long-life one.

    • +1

+1 except I usually go for Harvey Fresh unless it gets too expensive. (Price spikes every now and then)

      • I've not heard of Harvey Fresh before. Is that a boutique brand? I.E; there's brand in SA called Paris Creek, as well as another one called Fleurieu, which are yummier than the 'VB' equivalents, but I generally just go for the cheaper one.

        • +1

Not boutique… but it is a WA brand… sorry for the confusion.

          • +1

@jatyap: No apology necessary 🙂 It sounds nice, if I see it here I’ll give it a try. I definitely think milk makes a difference, especially to coffee.

  • Have you tried Milk Lab for both soy and almond options? You won't find it at supermarkets as it's a brand that most good cafes use (not a regular retail product) but you can easily find it on Amazon, Catch etc.
I've tried a lot of brands and I'm hooked on this one. Perfect for frothing also.
I agree with your sentiment, now I've moved away from cow milk I prefer the flavour. Cow milk tastes bitter to me now also. Each to their own, but it's nice to have all these options now :)

    • I always choose Milklab oat milk when I buy coffee at McDonalds. At home I use Aldi/Coles/Woolworths soy.

  • Since the price of milk went up i normally drink it black or with a sprinkle of coffee mate.

Hasn't realised OAT was so popular!

    Full breastfeeding milk.

  • +2

Full cream cow’s milk is a joke, used to be 3.8% fat min irrc, but now its just so watered down… best milk ive had was when my fridge decided to freeze everything. the milk bottle was partially frozen (water content i'm guessing) so it was much creamier… maybe adding cream to milk achieves this also?

  • If you're drinking cows milk, I highly recommend finding Jersey. It's got a better flavour/mouth feel than the milk you usually get at the supermarket

    • It is completely subjective, depends more on what you are used to/grew up with and what the cows eat.

  • I don't ruin my espresso with either milk or sugar.

  • +3

where do i buy rat milk?"

    • +1

Start your own herd. You can gather free range from the local sewer too.

    • I think you’d have to milk a rat. It will probably bite you though.

  • +2

Having partially grown up on a dairy farm and had the obligatory school full cream milk I must say things have changed.
There was already a global milk overproduction in the 70's. Powdered milk among condensed milk was being used to store it. Nestle's huge campaign in Africa led to huge suffering of infants who had no clean water with their mothers stop breastfeeding using formula for convenience.
I even learned how to milk by hand! Hygiene in a condensed barn was beyond my believe! Took me to age 40 to get off cow's milk and been healthier ever since.
So far there is no real non dairy alternative on cheese. I am still addicted to cheese. Some countries allow cheese production from raw milk. Eating French Camembert that gone liquid is still a risk like eating sous vide beef. Both from France.
Oat is the new global leader. Baristas are racing to get the mix to perfection.

    • +3

Cheese is a healthier addiction than most. And delicious. I'm also addicted to cheese. Cheese is life.

    • +2

Research supports that we find cheese genuinely addictive! I found removing milk and butter from my diet easy but could never quite cut cheese out entirely.
I'm waiting eagerly for precision fermented dairy to become easily accessible. Not only are animals not involved, but they're able to reduce saturated fat, remove cholesterol and lactose, while retaining all the good stuff like calcium and protein. And in flavour and performance it's indistinguishable from the real thing. I just wish it would hurry up and come to Australia!

Where's the option for Condensed Milk - with ice?

    • +1

Actually, pure cream is pretty good too.

  • Jizz

  • I stopped drinking dairy milk a couple of years ago for health and ethical reasons. It tastes rancid now that my palate has adjusted.

Bonsoy is a great product, although it isn't enriched with vitamins and minerals. So whilst I buy Bonsoy on occasion for making coffee at home, I prefer So Good which is one of the more neutral tasting ones and froths well while being more nutritious (particularly for bone health). Often if ordering from a cafe I choose oat milk as it complements coffee best. I think it's the ideal first option to switch to if your palate is used to dairy. I agree that the froth isn't as dense but it's still good.

    • Soy is worse

      • +2

        Do you mean for health?
If so, great news friend - a stack of research has been done since the old scaremongering days of claims that it would give men tits etc. Having soy products regularly results in a longer and healthier life. If you can be bothered, here is part one of two episodes of a podcast where an expert summarises a lot of the latest evidence. https://open.spotify.com/episode/0WE1qURCNwRSa7mwS5i8LD?si=2…

If you're saying, soy is worse as in flavour, then fair enough - I can't argue with your taste buds!

I just want milk that tastes like real milk

    • Low fat, no fat, full cream, high calcium, high protein, soy, light skim, omega 3, high calcium with vitamin D and folate or extra dollop?

Oh Paul's you sweet, sweet summer child. If you wanted to do something like that now you'd need to extend the ad break.

  • +2

Unhomogenised, full fat organic if available. Nothing like it imho in coffee but we all get used to different things, and then resist change.

Others in the house have bonsoy almond, Bonsoy soy, and lactose free (unhomogenised, full fat). The Aldi almond and soy milks are ok but they use with corn oil with isn’t as good as the sunflower oil used by bonsoy.

    Shopping is a a nightmare

    • Bonsoy doesn’t have any added oil. You must be thinking of Vitasoy.

  • Lactose free cows milk. Light or full cream, doesnt matter. Tastes no different to non UHT milk IMO…if anything maybe just a little sweeter.

    • +1

My son has lactose free - to me it tastes significantly sweeter than regular cows milk.

      • +1

The enzyme used turns the lactose to sugar

      • +1

I'm lactose intolerant so have had to switch.
Yes it is sweeter. The lactase processes the lactose.

  • If its not cow milk, then ill only use MilkLab Oat or Almond milk

  • Rice Milk. Tastes far better than cow milk (or any milk for that matter). I wish had tasted it years ago.

    • Do you DIY or use specific brand?

      • Just Vitasoy from most supermarkets

        • Thanks

We are fans of powdered milk atm. Started using it for travelling and camping and now use it in coffee every day as we prefer the taste.
The beauty of powdered milk is that you can adjust the richness by adding more or less powder to the mix. And it lasts for ages.
And once the zombie apocolypse becomes evident we dont have to get used to the taste of powdered milk….😎

    • +1

agreed - powdered milk snot bad

in boarding school we had short breaks between classes, and I kept a big tin of Milo mixed with powdered milk and sugar to taste - so rushing in at short break time, boil the jug, maybe 2 heaped dessertspoons of the powdered mix into a mug, pour on hot water, stir to dissolve, drink in 2 minutes and back outta there !

now when I run out of fresh milk I keep milk powder handy and tend to mix it up as per pack first instructions - maybe 150cc cold water in a sealable jar on my digital scales, add the instruction weight of milk powder, lid on, shake it until dissolved, and ready to use. The instructions say to then dilute with an equal amount with water, but I don't - I just keep it double-strength for more creamy coffee I like !

  • What about carnation milk or milk powder?

  • +4

Straight cream only, has a higher fat content so can put in less, get the same effect and still get that coffee taste. Milk dilutes the coffee too much and robs the coffee of its intrinsic flavour

  • +1

usually milk from aldi, but sometimes it's from coles if I cant get to aldi.

    • Funny you say this. I’m not a fan of Woolworths milk compared to norco, Aldi and coles. If I drink it straight I can taste the difference. Slightly sour taste at Woolies. I think they are doing permeate again as it no longer mentions it on their packaging.

  • either full fat milk, soy milk or barista special soy milk

  • Id love to see some footage of Almonds, Soy etc being milked😁

meh - I nearly missed a bus from Hanoi waiting for Vietnamese coffee to drip through the too-tiny holes

as I stressed about minute after minute ticking by, and saying my bus was about to leave, the girl behind the counter told me it usually took 10 minutes to drip through - and it was only a small almost espresso-sized amount

      I was - gidammit I ain't buying this anymo' … !!!

  • +3

    "Bitty"

  • Barramba Lactose-free on the weekend with cream on top.
To subsidise this lavishness I then buy grinders coffee on S&S from Amazon.

  • Anyone tried orange juice + ice?

    • How about orange juice + espresso?

  • The (slightly) higher fat full cream milks are much better than supermarket milk - Norco and Riverina. Very noticeable difference.

The milk/cream blends are also great - Norco's Finest and Farmhouse Gold.

Always happy to pay the price premium over supermarket milk.

Lacto free milk is missing in the options. I think it’s most common for ppl who has indigestion issues with milk.

  • A2 Milk, can't go back to the usual Woolies or Coles milk now..

    • sounds like you're selling it …

  • I drink black coffee but milk for my muesli and cooking comes from the neighbours dairy. Unpasteurised, unhomogonised but totally delicious!

  • I dont use milk at all, I use cream, which is quite usual in areas of Europe. Best taste ever.

    • halb-und-halb I enjoyed in Germany

  • Full cream or oat milk

  • Almond + Oat milk boiz

I'm in no way, shape or form anti milk, but try macadamia milk. It's delicious in coffee.

  • Full fat pouring cream for flavour and body

  • Bonsoy Milk.

I'm lactose intolerant. I used to buy Lactose Free milk. But like you, I've gotten a taste for Bonsoy now.

I buy them in bulk from Amazon when they go on sale. No need to carry home from the shops.

  • +1

If you like Oat milk, just buy Barista Oat milk, it’s specially crafted for coffee, works as well as cow’s milk

  • I drink my coffee with that cows milk that is extra creamy (like Hunt & Brew Extra Creamy or Brownes Extra Creamy), because life is short.

Does that need its own poll entry?

  • Cambodian breast milk.

  • when I sojourned in Germany last century what was given out with the local Tschibo coffee - if I recall cheap like 1 mark, so many would buy two cups in saucers and stack them on the standing-room-only tiny tables, gulp down one after the other in a couple of minutes, and walk out ready for the ice and snow - anyhoo the little tiny milk capsules were labelled 'halb und halb' - meaning 'half and half' which I believe meant half milk, half full cream.

damn tasty - milky and creamy - so now when milady has some leftover pure cream (not that gelatine-thickened stuff) in the fridge, when I make a drip-filter coffee I chuck in a dash of cream and milk (may need stirring so the cream doesn't just float on top) - and a creamy milky coffee I like !

  • Emergency back-up supply. Full of goodness, full of vitamins, full of marrowbone jelly.

The other day as I was waiting for my coffee… I heard a high school boy ordering Almond Flat White… I almost died. This world is becoming too woke for me.

    • +4

What has wokeness got to do with it? I love my soymilk coffee. Milk tastes really sour if you haven't drunk it for a few months. Also, some people don't digest cow's milk well. Personally, I find drinking nut juice more natural than drinking milk from another animal's nipple.

  • Full cream cows milk, occasionally non-homogenised when I can be bothered holding a spoon over the pour. I’ve tried many different almonds and oats, I’m not against them but didn’t find the experience as fulfilling personally. UHT milk is disgusting it tasted and smelled like cheese but perhaps I just got a bad batch.

  • 2% cow milk here. Full fat milk makes me feel a bit queazy after a latte.

  • It depends. If I'm out? Oat milk (or almond). If I'm making it at home? Lactose free full cream. Sometimes even powdered creamers. I'm not going to the effort of warming up plant based milk to the right temp so it doesn't split when added, but also avoid overfrothing (I don't like froth).

  • Lactose free milk full cream

  • I use lactose free full cream. Textures well, tastes better too imo

  • Dumb poll, you have all these options except the only 2 I drink. Skim milk or Lactose Free milk. Lactose free skim milk is always the preference, but Ive never seen a Cafe that sells it, it's either one or the other or both individually. The only time I can get it in my coffee is when I make it at home.

    • A few missing, those cold pressed high protein milks sold at foodland/iga are great too.

  • Bonsoy is best. I can't drink anything else anymore…can't drink almond milk or oat milk, just doesn't work for me…

If you milk your girlfriend's breasts with her consent it is vegan milk
If you tie up someone else's girlfriend to milk her breasts without consent it is not vegan milk.
I'm not saying everyone should be vegan though. It is a personal decision.

No condensed milk option? I remember when you could buy tubes of condensed milk and coffee, premixed in the tube, man I was living the dream!
