  • Is this good for some where with wind? Like as Canberra?

    • I tried weeks ago in the twelve Apostles and was awesome. I am really impressed with this little bug.

      • Can you fly legally in the 12 Apostles?

        • Like your ID.

        • No is the answer because it's within spitting distance of an aerodrome (helicopter joy flights).

All it takes is someone being stupid and sending a drone into a tourist joy flight to ruin it for everyone

          • +6

@chartparker: Actually not the answer, that area is a "caution" area for recreational drones. It means you can fly however if helicopters are spotted you must land until the helicopter is clear from the area.

There are plenty of websites and apps you can use to get the actual answer, rather than just guessing.

@chartparker: One of your points still stands though, it only takes one idiot to ruin it for everyone, regardless of legality.

          • +1

@chartparker: The answer is yes, you are legally allowed to fly up to 120m in that circumstance.

            • @sbcbakedbeans: Even at 12 apostles? The tourism heli flies pretty darn low there.

              • @hamwhisperer: The rules are the same all over Australia (except some State/National parks have some exclusions).

If you're flying within 5.5km of a controlled aerodrome, you must use caution when flying, and are obligated to immediately drop your drone to ground level if you see or hear a helicopter.

If there is constantly helicopters in the area, then you are not allowed to fly.

But you are legally allowed to fly in that area in the absence of helicopters.

I'm not saying it's a good idea or not. But the question was about the legality.

                • @sbcbakedbeans: Is this specific to 250gm?
According to opensky there's a heap of places in Melbourne I just outright can't fly.
I do fly in the 'orange ones' but I don't exceed the 120Metre rule.

                  • @hamwhisperer: 250g+ is not allowed to fly within 5.5km of a controlled airport or aerodrome.

There's a point to be made, what's the difference between a 249g drone and a 290g drone if they're the same dimensions and performance? Which is what a Mini 3 Pro weighs with the standard battery vs plus battery respectively.

But that is what the rules are currently.

              • @hamwhisperer: Different set of rules applies to sub 250g drones (which this one is with the standard battery). https://www.casa.gov.au/knowyourdrone/drone-rules , as already indicated you can legally fly a Mini 3 Pro, but you need to be mindful of helicopters and manoeuvre away or land your drone immediately when you see one.

        • @holeefuk The main point being missed (well at least partially) in these replies is that the apostles are in a National Park. You are not allowed to take off and land in a national park in Victoria. The only place near(ish) to the apostles not in the national park is up the road that the helicopters take off from. Obviously that introduces a new risk and you need to fly back towards the ocean which may get you in trouble with being able to see it. I guess you could go early morning before the flights start, take off and then walk with your drone in the air? You'd want a decent battery though…

      • Good to know mate, I will keep my eyes on this next week.

Please listen to people replying to you!

Download "opensky" and check before flying. It's restrictive enough as it is. If you fly in banned zones, they'll ban them even more.

Especially 12 apostles, because those tourism helicopters go much lower than normal ones.

Just note that you may lose autonomous features like the ability to fly back to the home point, in high winds.

But tbh I've never needed to use this. But it's worth knowing.

Doesn't help that you have to use Zip Pay and you'd need to have a big enough limit on your account to buy it.

    • If it's the same as Afterpay you could pay most of it with eBay gift cards to reduce the BNPL amount. Might work with Zip too.

Might want to grab the Fly More Kit Plus for this drone while you are at it. With the same code you can get it for $305.14 which I think is also a historical low. The 47 mins fly time with the plus battery is just insane, greatly compensates for it's relatively low speed compared to the Mavic series.

While more battery life is good, bear in mind that the bigger battery puts your drone over 250g which can limit where you want to fly it.

      • The main effect this will have is you cannot fly it within 5.5km of a controlled airport.

    • Yes this is true, I really think there's little point in buying the drone without the kit, especially at that price.

      • I got the mini 2 and ended up now buying a total of 6 batteries. I couldn't imagine owning one of these with only 1

        • Honestly it's kinda shitty the way they've structured it, it's designed to make you buy the kit. But I did, and I love it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • +1

    Buy it!
    Enough said!

  • I am eagerly waiting for a good deal on Flymore Combo. I sold my Mavic pro to get this one. Just because Camera is great, and its sub 250grams
