Thats luxury on many chromebooks! Very few in this price range with Ssd. Most also 64GB

    • Still got an old one I use from time to time (battery died and replacing it would have been halfway to a new one, so I got the new one) with I think only 16gb, a fair few of which is used by the system as is.

No problems. This is Chrome, baby.

  • +4

is this any good to use just for the internet, and few basic excel spreadsheets and emails???

    • Yes. Read the reviews.

Unless you want long battery life.

      • thank you

        • Everybody below says battery life is great.

          • +1

@shaybisc: I just read 2 reviews from reputable sites - 1 said battery life is great, the other said battery life is bad haha

    • +2

Excel won’t be the “real” Excel. It will be browser based or maybe by side loading the Android app.

If it was me, I wouldn’t be using this for any serious Excel work.

      • +2

Do you need to "side-load". I thought this Duet range was hybrid Chromebook / Android Tablet.
There was some debate with the earlier edition, about whether apps worked better installed or browser-based. In the end it seemed to depend on the individual app and user.

        • +1

Would depend if the device has been marked as compatible for the app in PlayStore. A quick Google gave me the impression it wasn’t, but I didn’t research very hard, so I could be wrong.

Either way, the Android app still isn’t ideal.

          • @PainToad: I have the Duet 2 and use PlayStore

            • +1

@thanatos350: No one said the PlayStore isn’t available. The question was is MS Office for Android available on the PlayStore for this device.

can't stack with perks $200 get $30 back .. finished last night

    • Noooooooooooooooooo! Damn it

  • +1

Tempting, but my old duet is still going strong.

I find these are one of the best devices for online meetings.

  • Don't forget if you have an old USI 1 pen from another Chromebook it won't work on this one because of the screen and you'll need to purchase a new USI 2 pen.

Tempted. Ive been in Japan for the last 3 weeks and my original Duet has done me great for everything from email, editing photos to emulator games on the plane. As such can't really justify the upgrade AND having to replace both my USI 1 pens.. Can I? 😂

    • +3

Furthermore, this SKU (82T6001GAU) does not include the pen according to Lenovo PSREF, while the 8GB SKUs sold in the US, SG, and other places, and the 8GB Duet 5 SKUs sold at Officeworks all include the pen. So you will need to add the cost of the pen (and actually source it).

Personally I picked up a "refurbished" (actually new, but in 3rd party packaging) HP X2 11 from Amazon US for about A$320 total (not sure if it can ship to AU; I am overseas) as an upgrade from my OG Duet that I love, and so far it's everything I was looking for. Better aspect ratio+size, especially for document markup, 8GB RAM and better chipset make a big difference for responsiveness. It is a step up in build overall. However, if I were still in AU and didn't have access to that deal, I would be sticking with the OG Duet as the cost + sourcing a pen would not really be justified as the original still does the job well enough. One good thing is that with 9yrs of updates, they'll always be useful as a basic web browser machine for someone in any case.

      • did you get this one?
        https://www.amazon.com/HP-Chromebook-11-da0023dx-Qualcomm-Sn…

Looks to be about $390 delivered

        • +1

That's the one, it was $180 USD at the time but looks to have gone back up. I paid ~$220USD with a screen protector and tax, shipped to Canada.

Sounds like it should be a good deal in AU too if the price goes down again, especially for someone who doesn't have a pen already as it comes with one.

These things are fantastic for basic office tasks on the go.

I used one for a 2 day training course, and with a 10,000mah battery I had my phone providing hot spot + used my Duet both days and finished the course with 75% battery remaining on the brick (3 of 4 leds lit up), and my Duet and phone at 100%. Ridiculously efficient compared to the guys using laptops who were glued to the power points.

The course required basic Excel and Word usage, which Sheets and Docs converted and worked with just fine. Better than the web version of Office (which I also tried). Would definitely have issues with anything serious though.

I also had to keep an eye on my business' emails which AquaMail handled as expected. Swaps to a Outlook/Thunderbird type layout on the bigger screen.

Big fan of these things. Combination of keyboard + touchscreen + sipping on the battery is a total win.

    • +1

I second this…. the best device for lite office work and worth the buck too!

    • Interesting - I had 1st gen of this and offloaded due to no ability to load Android apps and overall too slow.
Def tempted to go again but only with these two solved.

      • +3

does have the ability to load android apps, you just need to put in in developer mode by following a specific startup process, and select the correct options, chromeos states that using developer mode is less secure than in normal mode,

note that if you do that then it format the chromebook and you start fresh, also when ever yuu restart or power off/on the device it will temp show the startup options but you dont actually do anything just leave it for few seconds and willl start up (in develeoper mode) only things is hthat this loud startup noise which is annoyingm, but once your in developer mode you can side load android apps from apk files or you can just download load an alternative store that way u can auto update apps with download apk file yourself ( i use aurora store - you can either use ur google account just like play store, or use it anonymously)
also note that if you do take it out of developer mode it will power cycle the device again and you will lose all data

I agree OG duet is a bit slow, but if ur not multi tasking its usually ok, i have run PSRemote Play and XBox streaming off it and had no issues, but anything like multitasking or anything to demanding you will notice, but on this model here with the SD processor and additional ram will make a huge difference

        • Cheers! Appreciate the info

      • +1

As in you wanted to install APKs from other sources? My needs are met by whats on the Play Store (which I suspect is the same for 99.9% of the buyers of these sorts of things) so can't really say what the sideloading experience is like.

    • "75% battery remaining on the brick (3 of 4 leds lit up)" "Ridiculously efficient compared to the guys using laptops who were glued to the power points."
Did I misunderstand, Lenovo does a charger/battery powerpack combo? Even if they don't that's an idea I can get behind.

      • +1

I have a 10,000mah power brick from whatever that Z-something brand is on Amazon everyone loves. That power brick with a USB C charging cable + a Duet + my phone were all I took to the classes. I didn't need a power point over that 48 hours and finished the course with at least half my charging brick capacity (who knows how accurate those LEDs are), and my phone and Duet both fully charged.

I leave the Duet in my car pretty much permanently, and even if I haven't touched it in a month I flip the lid and its always ready to go. Battery life is just…. not something I need to worry about.

For working on the run it's brilliant. The keyboard and touchpad + touchscreen makes it infinitely more usable than a mobile phone or touch-only tablet of a similar size. And if you really want just a tablet… Unplug the keyboard. Boom. Now it's an Android iPad.

    • how many chrome tabs can this handle ?

Are you able to remote desktop (with standard windows RDP) on this?

    • +1

Yep, I use the Android remote desktop app to connect to my home PC as well as my work "Windows Virtual Desktop" environment.

      • Is your work virtual desktop using citrix by chance? If it works with citrix then I will definitely buy

        • No sorry, my one is the Microsoft/Azure product. I haven't got access to a Citrix environment to test.

I checked and the Citrix Workspace android app is listed as compatible with the Duet, so I I can't see why it wouldn't work

    • Yes

  • What resolution can you download video content on the apps for Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and Youtube Premium on these?

    • +2

I picked one up this arvo and just checked myself. I tried Netflix and Prime's download feature and it didn't look any better than 720p. It was approx 122MB for 50 minutes on Netflix and 270MB for 60 minutes on Prime.

Oddly, quality through the netflix app (streaming) was lower than through the web browser (stats showed 1080p - not sure if I can find resolution info in the apps)

Edit: I found in the Netflix app that the Duet 3 has Widevine L3 which means SD playback is the best you can hope for.

      • Netflix Android app: 720p (max)
        Chrome browser: 1080p (max)

  • had the previous generation and quite happy to use it as a lunch buddy.

  • +1

I have the original duet 4GB/128Gb and recently got the duet 5 8GB/256GB
Both are fantastic for what they are, i wanted to be able to use the OG duet as replacement but for my surface, but i think due to processer/ram was bit restricted and have mainly used it as a "android tablet", but with the Duet 5 i havent used my surface since, have been basically able to do everything i was doing on the surface (with some minor set backs but honestly nothing that would make me go back to surface), i use for basic spreadsheet, emails, browsing

The snapdragon processor and 8gb ram made huge difference, and on the 5 i have been using a mix of chrome os/android/linux so its pretty good, only issue i have is that due to this having an ARM processor not intel, so no access to a few linux apps, but that due to developers not extended support to ARM processors, for example Brave browser, developers support intel processors, and MacOS ARM64 but not support non-mac ARM64, and similar some other apps that i use,

So its really good in my opinion but wish they would use a intel processor instead of arm to get access to more app options.

this model site between OG duet and duet 5, sharing same processor as the 5 and 8gb ram but half the storage and smaller screen

If your not desperate, or want a better price check out grays auctions they regularly have refurbished duets on auction
I got my OG duet in July 2021 for under $220 including all fees/surcharges/shipping
and got my Duet 5 a few week ago for under $470 including all/fees/surcharges/shipping

    • So its really good in my opinion but wish they would use a intel processor instead of arm to get access to more app options.

ARM processors tend to consume significantly less power for the same performance delivering better battery life.

      • +1

yes true battery life on the 5 is crazy, its really impressive, but for me personally i would sacrifice battery life in favour of accessing "desktop" versions of the apps i regularly use instead havind to use the limited android versions, if more developers would support ARM than no issues,

Again its just personal preference and more convenience than being are real set back

        • Chromebooks are not meant to run full desktop stuff. They're made to use web apps and android apps only. That's kinda the whole point of them.

          • @MrFunSocks: Fair enough, but there are many chromebooks that have intel chips, and chromeos has linux support, obviously no chromebook is going to be a complete desktop replacement, but having access to more linux apps that dnt support arm processors is definately an advantage,
for example Brave browser, even though chrome browser works pretty well but i have forgotten how bad 99% of websites are with adds as i use brave on all my devices, having the option of using desktop version wld be perfect, even though i have android version of brave on my duet, i use chrome as it is a better experience but find myself switching between the two as some site are just unbearable due to adds/trackers/popups/etc
Having desktop version would eliminate having android app and using chrome.

also i have 5 or 6 email accounts, i prefer using bluemail, again cant use linux version of it as it doent support arm, so im using android version which is workable and does the job, i would prefer the more refined desktop version

Again these are just preferences to have a better more refined experience,

  • I had the IdeaPad Duet (CT-X636F), and it's sluggish as hell.
If this chromebook is in the same league as CT-X636F, I would avoid at all cost

    • Must have had a dud or tried to perform tasks it was never designed for. My experience is quite the opposite.

      • I'm not sure why mine is so slow.
My son get frustrated easily using that IdeaPad to play roblox, and when I see it, it's quite laggy

  • +1

Need to get my daughter a chromebook for high school next year, looks like this might be the one.

    • Out of curiosity, are those syllabus web-based? Will Chromebook be compatible with the class work? I've seen parents getting iPads because their teacher saying the apps only available on Apple

      • +1

They recommend a Chromebook. Maybe the inner-city kids get iPads but regional kids get by on Chromebooks.

      • +2

Haven't seen/had any experience where the school work will require an Apple device. Most of the time it's all web-browsed based. Online activities and worksheets using Google Classroom, Docs, etc.

    • +2

For that use I would suggest the Duet 5 8GB/256GB that is currently being discounted at Officeworks for $547. (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/737412), as although the Duet 3 is a great piece of kit it may be a little cramped for all-day use.

The Duet 5 has a larger screen, full sized keyboard, (the size of the whole unit is around the size of an A4 piece of paper) and more battery life, and comes with the stylus.

  • re: "Note: CHROME OS" , as well as a full desktop web browser(ie not crippled like on IOS or Android), it also runs Linux (ARM) and Android apps.

OK, if you really must run MS-Windows apps, you can RDP to your desktop. These are very much designed for connected use.

What resolution can you download video content on Youtube Premium

  • Anyone using something similar for primary school kids? Year 3? Need to buy one next year and checking for advice or suggestions

  • Reviews say that it can load 'some' apps from the marketplace. Anyone can advise what some of the apps that are not compatible? I can't seem to find anything on with what apps wouldn't be compatible.

    • +1

Sorry I can't be more precise, but I have indeed found some apps to be a bit sketchy in terms of compatibility. From memory it might have been some of the streaming service apps (Netflix, Disney+, SBS on Demand etc) and it was to do with rendering onto the screen, especially on a secondary monitor, in which case you may need to use the website version.

  • Thanks for posting. I've been waiting for this to go on sale for a few days now.

  • Damn, this was the one I wanted but wasn't released yet so I got the 5. Wonder what the resale value of these are

  • Can I get some thoughts on this vs the duet 5 deal below or even something else for my use case:

Web browsing, streaming services, booking hotels and researching destinations while travelling in the car. Maybe occasional go ame streaming through something like xbox gamepass.

I plan to get a decent gaming laptop for the travel and more permanent setup in house/hotel on desk/table but this would be for quick tasks on the road, for the wife or son to use or just when I'm on the coach.

Don't mind spending more than either of these options and always happy to spend less too.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/737412

    All help appreciated :-)

    • +2

The Duet 5 is out of stock now. Like you said for quick tasks on the road, the Duet 3 would be efficient.

      • Thank you!

    • +2

This is more than sufficient, Duet 5 will do the same but if your using it on the go or on the couch the smaller screen of Duet 3 will be more convenient, that price in the post is pretty good but as mention its pretty much OOS, still showing available in Livepool NSW, Cambelltown and Eastern creek

      • Thank you!

    • +1

Duet 3 wins over Duet 5 for what you are describing. Duet 5's size becomes a little unweildy to use when not seated, or in tablet mode it is that little bit too big. If you only have one device in total, then Duet 5 would be better for cases where you don't have an alternative device as a daily driver.

      • Thank you!

  • The better deal on amazon which you can pricebeat at officeworks, is the lenovo 15.6 slim 3 chromebook laptop with the pentium n6000 and 8gb of ram, a touch under $400 (on amazon).

I have one of these I picked up for $80 somewhere (not joking), and it's fantastic.

    • That somewhere was a garage sale

Do not buy these. They are utter garbage and have one of the highest return rates I've seen in the past 5 years for any laptop.

Of the last 20 units sold, we've had 8 returned with various software/hardware faults.

    Avoid.

  • How does this companre to the Ipad 9th Generation which is $550 ?

  • Fancy pants Asus eee

  • How does this compare to surface pros lol?

  • How sturdy is this? Need a Chromebook for my 13yo who starts highschool next year. Everything is done via Google Classroom, Drive, Docs, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
It will experience a bump or 2.

    • +1

If the Duet 5 is anything to go by, then this is not sturdy as it is so thin. I dropped my Duet 5 onto hard ground and needed to write it off (thankyou purchase protection insurance!) as the corner dented and screen cracked and repair cost was more than purchase price. You would probably want some type of protective case (if they make such a thing), but by that time get some other device.

      • Dang. That sucks. The specs looked so good, as did the price.

  • Does anyone know if there's a good folio case for this device, that holds both the screen and keyboard?
My friend bought one for her 8yo and is now wondering how best to protect the device while on a desk.
