Hi guys,

I'll be making the trip down to Adelaide this weekend for the inaugural Harvest Rock festival presented by Secret Sounds. Just saw that they have slashed the prices for GA 1 & 2 day event tickets by 30%, so if you're in Adelaide and keen for an awesome weekend give it a look. This fest is definitely aimed more at the Double J sort of crowd, but has absolutely awesome acts top to bottom.

Kinda surprised but also not surprised that they are struggling to shift tickets for this. Try as it might, I just don't think Adelaide will ever truly be a destination for events like this (Womadelaide aside, but only because that has been going on forever and is unmatched by anything else in Australia).

They would sell this out 5 times over in Melbourne.

Groove Armada are my headline act FWIW…

        • Your opinion and the festival organisers are different then.
Jack white and crowded house (nostalgia tour) are the headlines and all remaining acts are spread over two days.
If it was a one day festival for the original price I would have gone and a number of others i know, not two days though. An eclectic mix of bands covering a generation or two but not enough each day to make it worthwhile for my extended group, each to their own though.

    • I actually like going to smaller size festivals - Adelaide works well if they can get the bands across. As a punter it's easy to get close to the action and find a spot where the sound isn't bouncing off everything.

Adelaide doesn't excel at Indie rock though, it's a bit more of a bogan market.

      • Yes, great for the punters who get to go (so long as it doesn't get cancelled), not great for the people actually working to put these festivals on. Don't expect Harvest Rock to come back in 2023 if the crowd numbers are low.

I've acted for tour promoters before and it really is a numbers game.

      • agree enough for festivals, plenty of regular indie rock shows on about the place though

  • 20 odd years of packed out Big Day Outs to name just one event of this type that has worked in Adelaide.
Source: I went to at least 10 of them.
Edit: I guess BDO's had a lot more international acts to be fair.

    • BDO very different crowd, and as you say, way more big headline acts. it was also part of a national tour, so the artists were already here. Harvest Rock is Adelaide only…

    • Music festivals are not all cut from the same cloth. This is quite a niche boutique fest whereas BDO tried to appeal to as wide of a demographic as possible which huge international names. It's also over a decade later in a considerably different market for acts. Harvest Rock just managed to really put together a list of names that I'm keen to see, much like the old Harvest Festival from AJ Maddah a few years ago.

      • AJ Maddah…I remember being thoroughly entertained by his presence on the internet during the Soundwave era! I wonder what he is up to now.

Drop Courtney Barnett and it would have sold out by now.

I paid full price, there's a pretty full roster of bands I love and a few I want to check out. Pity weather isn't looking great which is rare for Adelaide but hope it clears up. Have friends coming over from Melbourne for it too, should be a great weekend. Looking at the lineup and schedule there will not be many times I won't be in front of one of the stages. Really looking forward to Cat Power, Jack White, Kurt Vile, Courtney Barnett, Avalanches, You Am I etc.

I'm a Gen X BDO veteran, this is my bag baby.

Adelaide has a bad reputation for slow ticket sales and then a rush at the end - must put off promoters.

Love the name - it was at Harvest 2012 I had the absolute pleasure of first experiencing a Sigur Ros live show

    • Yeah, I noticed that.

I think it's more "I'm free this weekend, whats up?" Kinda purchases.

It's Adelaide , not much happens there so they should get a good crowd in the end . last time i was in Adelaide was car racing and RHCP a few years back and since then nothing has compelled me to return ( Ex Adelaide lad ) . if i actually knew this was on i might have come down for this if only to catch maybe 4 acts in that lineup

When this was announced I thought this is a cracking lineup but it’s a pity it’s not touring nationally.I guess the idea was to get people to go to SA but I just can’t be arsed.

What started for me as a quick weekend getaway to Adelaide has morphed into a 10 day adventure around South Australia :D

    • Plus the set times are pretty horrible (for the acts I'd like to see anyway) with lots of over-lap.

  • +2

I think they went a bit wide rather than deep in the lineup, has something for everyone but no one buys a $300 ticket and spends 2 days to see the 5 acts they like.

  • Farout. Literally bought them 3 days ago at full price. I would assume there's no way to get them refunded and then paid at this price. Grim times

This is a great line up. Was in two minds but this is now a no brainer

    • Glad to help. Might see you in the pit :D
