  • Good deal OP. Everywhere else is $590

    • Everywhere else is $590

      Not true…

Everywhere else is at least $590

  • Good price for the stainless version.

If you can afford it it’s worth the extra dollars for the digital lcd screen on the pro the next one up, digital grind settings , tells you when to flush and descale , it’s just got those little extra nice to haves without being over the top

    • +1

and believe it is faster steam and recovery between brew and steam!
Edit: and I think the pro OPV is set to 9 bar unlike the express which is set way too high.

      • The digital screen one does steam faster. I like the analogue shot pour pressure gauge on this model though. You have to figure out a right pressure based on relative time spent pouring shot on digital.

        • I had the Barista express for about 3 yrs before I upgraded and noticed to achieve the right amount of liquid coffee out (2:1 ratio) in 30 sec, it requires the pressure needle to be very high (may be 2pm) which is equivalent to 13-14 bar (way too high) which result in bitter coffee. I however managed to change the spring in the OPV and the highest pressure needle it goes is around 11am-12noon which is equivalent to 9bar (ideal pressure).
I believe the Pro is factory set to 9 bar..

how much extra does it cost?

    • Extra $240?? eBay

    • +9

Extra features are nice to have but every extra feature decreases a products reliability. For me, I wouldn't pay extra for the features you have described

      • What do you see as the age of the product? Do you get simple things like Mocha pots in order for it to last?

Was considering an Alessi one instead of this, I hate having products that I’m worried will be break long term.

        • I've had mine for 4 years without a problem. I clean it with the cino clean tablets every 3 months of so, and also remove the shower screen thing to remove residue. I also use the Breville water filters, which do cost $30 or so every 6 months but it makes a nicer coffee

          • @PhilToinby: Is the shower screen easy to remove? Do you do it while the machine is upright or is it ok to lay it down on its side or back when removing it?

I think mines overdue for a clean. It looks like but I’ve owned it for 5+ years without removing it :o

            • +1

@johnnytran: It can be tricky to remove without damaging the o-ring. I normally tilt the machine on its side and use a small flat head screwdriver which fits in the hole where the screw was. With a bit of gentle maneuvering it comes off. There is always sludge in there, even after using the cleaning tablets, and I always run hot water through it after each coffee. The other place you will find coffee sludge is under the plastic insert at the base of the portafilter. You can remove this by pushing the plastic clip on the underside of the portafilter. I decided to not put the plastic base back in the portafilter as I didn't think it has a function other than potentially shielding the coffee from a cold portafilter.

        • I've had the older BES860 for about 10 years now and I bought it second hand.
It did need one electronics repair, for new capacitors on the main circuit board - still cheaper than a replacement though.

I would also avoid any coffee machines with unnecessary electronics. The heat cycling and proximity to water/steam definitely decreases their reliability.

          • @damion: Agree. Ive had the 870 for 7 years now and it still makes a great few cups everyday. In the time, I've had to replace a solenoid which i did it myself at a parts cost of $100. Replacing other electronics would be considerably trickier and I'd feel far less confident tinkering with it.

It's still a 54mm portafilter machine no matter how you look at it. Grinder looks the same as the Express as well and the digital is just for timing only. Express also tells you when to flush and descale, but it's just a flashing light.

You rather go all the way up to the Dual Boiler instead if you are upgrading from a Barista Express.

      • I have both the Breville dose control grinder and the smart grinder pro. The dose control is much messier and unable to grind finer than the smart grinder pro. If the Breville Barista Express has dose control and the Barista Pro has the smart grinder pro then it is a different story. Anyone able to confirm?

    • +3

The standard tells you when to flush and descale too, so it's literally only a digital display and control that is different. Not worth it IMO, considering you are getting the same grinder, basket etc. If I was going to pay more, I would just get a dual boiler model with full size basket etc.

    • None of that makes using it any easier. Most of those things you might interact with once every few months or so at most. I think the analog gauge on this one is a lot more aesthetic and practical than yet another useless lcd screen.

  • Any deal on eBay gift cards?

  • +1

They've cut down the content of the Breville bonus pack.
2 bags of coffee and a live demo now.
When I claimed my bonus a couple of years back, they "ran out" of cool items and gave me a couple of bags of beans to shut me up.

    • Same here. I think it was about the same price as this one but the cranberry red

      • Same - I bought the Cranberry Red because it was the only colour not on backorder at the time. Uglyyyyy.

        • I stuck it in a corner and bought some matching coffee containers. Its grown on me.

  • +1

Similar to the above - how much should I worry about going to the Pro model and getting higher risk reliability / maybe less longevity? Like car computer screens, more digital stuff makes me nervous if I want to pay and own this for a long time.

I’m a little nervous with Breville service - I lost a power cord to an air filter during a recent apartment move. I emailed support and offered to pay for the cord plus shipping or pick up from the factory, so I didn’t need to throw it all out. I got an initial acknowledgment email and then no response to 3-4 emails over a month. There are some reviews online to this as well when people have actual faults in their product.

Is the decreased waiting time as it heats up worth paying more for the Pro and taking that risk?

    • +3

I went through the same thought process before buying my Express. Did lots of research and watched lots of videos. Bought the Salted Licorice from Good Guys earlier in the year.
The advice I found was you still should wait 15 mins for the machine to warm up, including the portafilter. So it doesn't make any difference between the Pro and the Express.
In the 6 months I've been using the Express, pulling 2-4 double shots a day, not once have I wished I bought the Pro over the Express.

      • Thank you - really appreciate your comment.

No issues then, and very happy? Did you get any extended warranties?

        • Very happy! No issues. Bought a couple of extra accessories from Amazon which have helped me to dial in a good shot each time. I'm not barista but have worked with a few different coffee roasters and have learnt it is all about consistency. I bought a distributor, scales and a mat. I don't use the grind timer on the machine. Just measure out 18gms of beans in a glass and put that into the grinder each time.
Nah didn't bother with the extended warranty.

      • +2

I'm not sure there is a real need to wait 15min. If you run some hot water through the portafilter then that speeds things up. You can make a good coffee in about 2min after turning it on. Probably saves a lot.of power doing this too. I've never waited 15min and my machine is going strong 4 years later

        • +1

2 min = good coffee. 15 minute preheat of machine and cup = better coffee.

          • @damion: I use the hot water tap to heat up the cup. It spits out hot water after minute or so. I just half fill the cup with hot water and then tip it out. Works for me.

            • @PhilToinby: patience also makes the coffee taste better :)

    • +1

Do you need an lcd screen to show you a number that is otherwise visible on the dial that you might set once and never touch again?
The analogue gauge is nicer to look at - and frankly more useful for pulling a shot than an LCD screen showing what your grind setting has been always set to since you first set it up.

    Need some BES920 deals!

  • Wow this is the pre-covid price! Nice.

  • good machine, very happy with mine after 3 months / 300+ brews. This is my first electronic machine, been using The Flair handpresso up till then (still makes amazing coffee!)…

    • +1

3+ cups per day..? even if you share that amount with another person it's still too much… how do people not hear colours after consuming more than 1 shot per day lol!

      • +4

i only stop when i am seeing sounds.

      • I've cut back to 3 :S

      • wait you only have 1 shot per day?

I have 2 shots per coffee, sometimes more than 1 coffee

      • it's probably more actually! have this machine at my warehouse, so it's mainly me and 1/2 others :)

        I'm a 2 a-dayer.

  • We have this machine on the farm. I use to spend $6 for a coffee twice a day, so this thing paid itself off very quick. I think we have had this for ~2 years and still no issues. Just remember to treat it well and descale etc.

  • If you already have the Smart Grinder Pro is there any point getting this, or should get something like the Breville Bambino instead?

  • For those purchased the machine, I think we are eligible for this promotion: https://promotions.breville.com.au/bonus-deluxe-coffee-exper…

    • wow you get all these:
      • 2 x 250g P&R Porter St Coffee Beans
      • Live Roaster Online Demonstration

  • Anyone else having issues with this promo code? I cannot get the extra discount

  • Bing Lee, you've done it agaaain.
