    triple Z lootbox mechanics

    Upvotes incoming.

    • I wish Overwatch 2 had triple Z loot boxes. You have to grind thousands of hours now for a purple skin.

      • 'Have to'

        • Well you can use pay a lot of money for skins.

    • +8

Since when did the Megadrive have Daytona?

    • +1

      Daytona? You’ve got no idea

      It’s got virtua racing

    • +1

Yeah, that 16bit version ran like butter!

  • +6

    thumbs up for description

    dont care much for deal

    • +2

You shouldn't be upvoting based on how good the description is.

      • +1

You’re forgetting OzBargain is no longer about bargains.

  • -4

What does “triple Z lootbox mechanics” mean?

The physics of these old games is primitive compared to more recent games.

    • +1

Going outside and kicking a ball must be Triple-A to you then?

      • Still don't get it.

        • They’re saying that loot boxes suck and that old games were fun. Nothing to do with how physics are handled in these games.

  • +2

I wonder if the controllers will be good. Could be good to use with mister for an even more authentic experience.
    Although I like my 8bitdo M30

    • I have the previous version, they are OK, similar to the originals

    • Surely can't be better than the M30s.

    • Probably easier to buy the 8bitdo ones. There’s also the Nintendo Sega-licensed ones but they’re 3 button only.

  • +1

How does this compare to say a torrent full of ROM's? I know with Sega Master System ROM's, some games simply refuse to have save points (looking at you Phantasy Star). Maybe I just use a crap emulator?

    • +1

      Can’t you use save states?

      • Got no idea, its random as to what saves and where codes work. For example Wonderboy 3 codes work fine as does Gauntlet.

        • Many emulators have a feature that saves the complete contents of memory to a file so that you can load right back to where you were. Doesn’t need to use each game’s in built way of saving or codes.

Some even let you do stuff like rewind.

    • +4

Sounds like you’ve got shitty roms. Only use no-intro rom sets.

    • Phantasy star that I got was a bad ROM not allowing save. Try a different ROM

    • I recommend looking for Phantasy Star 2.0 rom. Some quality of life features added to the game (faster xp and money gain, faster walking, FM sound etc) and better text translation as well.

    • You're getting a licenses for all the games shipped on the console, which you wouldn't from the torrent.

      • Who cares?

  • But emulation exists?

    • +11

Yes it does, inside this mini megadrive.

    • +1

This is overpriced, I know, but I'm assuming this is an officially licenced product, and for some people that has value to them. Whether or not that's stupid is subjective.

      • If it’s like PlayStation mini it’s a crummy mediaTek SOC.
this is way more than the SNES or PSX mini.

Awesome, but feel $109 or so would be a better price point

        • +2

PSX mini was one of the greatest buys on Ozb due to all the poo'ing people dumped on it.

Was $45 but now worth $150-$200.

          • @plmko: That's interesting - is it because… people actually just the tiny and cute mini PSX, or because it's actually ok?

            • @Droz: It used the PAL version of ROMs, so some games would run at 50Hz on your 60Hz display. This causes judder and a poor overall viewing experience. The console also also only outputs in 720p in stock form, meaning all your games are internally scaled to 720p, then again to your display's native resolution by your monitor. This is a poor solution.

Ideally the PSX should have used 60Hz NTSC ROMs, however, the unit is easily hackable to install a wide range of your own ROMs, change output resolution, change internal image scaling methods and install emulators of other consoles. That combined with production ceasing may have driven the price up.

              • @TeddyBear: Production ceasing wasn't the reason for the prices going up, if it was crap then it will remain crap. The prices gone up because as you said it is easily hackable and fixing to taste is easy. But also if that was only the case then you can simply get a cheaper emulator…….no people want it now because they want their emulator to look like a PSX and also for the quality USB PS1 controllers that can be used on PC.

Collectors who didn't buy it because of the internet rage really missed out I feel. It's the same as the PS Vita TV, hated on by the internet at $50…..until the discovery of the potential puts it at $300+.

                • @plmko: I didn't know there was a PSVita TV!! Damn.

I've got one of the SNES classics, which I think "hacked" and dumped a bunch more ROMs on there.

I loved the SNES controllers, so that was good too.

The PS I remember coming out and everyone slating it. I also remember not really loving that many PS1 games - they were revolutionary at the time, but are just so frustratingly paced by today's standards.

I was never a fan of the original PS1 controllers, though I loved Dual Shock.

I wonder what the internals of the Megadrive here are - is it just the same chip as the NES/SNES, or did they chuck in a new one?

Being able to add your own ROMs really does make these things worthwhile…

Now, if only I could find a non-broken version of Raiden Fighters Jet…

            • @Droz: Quality accessible hardware makes it worth the price. You get 2 x quality and authentic PS1 controllers that are USB and can be plugged in to PC, really needs no further explanation on why. PS1 controllers also make for great retro controllers as well especially for SNES.

            • @Droz: I sold mine recently but kept the controllers. The controllers are really awesome for retro games! Less than 3ms of input lag if you increase the USB polling rate, and they feel exactly like original ps1 controllers!

          • @plmko: Yeah $30 delivered from Amazon US haha

          • @plmko: It was shite thats why.

Tons of other min remakes were tons better than the half arsed attempt that was the PSX mini

      • I really like the way one of the hosts on the Filthy Casuals podcast described these mini consoles in an old episode. They’re like a model car with a bit of extra functionality. That holds value for some people but it’s subjective.

  • +5

    This is great.

Depending on which games you want to play, though, the Mega Drive classics collection on your PC or console will probably be better value for most. It's about $30 for a bundle of all 55 games (less when on sale). Even cheaper if you just want to choose your one or two favourite games.

    https://store.steampowered.com/app/34270/SEGA_Mega_Drive_and…

I find that I like to play these oldies for a few minutes for nostalgia, but not enough to pay a whole lot of money in 2022 when there are plenty of good modern games for cheap too. $200 is a bit much for an hour or two of fun.

And on the PC, I can use a more accurate/fast-moving controller than these, like the DS5 and Switch Pro, and actually beat the games a bit easier (plus it's wireless).

    • +2

You're right, but 1992 me thinks this is a bargain.
I paid $180 back then with only Sonic 2 and the old 3 button controller.

    • You aren't counting the cost of the PC, controllers etc. you're using in that price comparison, but everyone has a PC that can run I guess.

      • @Budju yeah if it required a proper gaming PC that's different. This requires any old laptop/desktop you have sitting around, and (optionally) any old controller from that last gen (or the gen before) console you never use anymore.

        • +1

Most people probably have those things. But they don't look as cool as this 😝

  • +1

looks good with long list of games, but then I go through them and only a very small portion of them I remember favourably. But almost tempted just for Golden Axe and Afterburner.

    • +1

They are about a dollar each on steam:

      https://store.steampowered.com/app/34276/Golden_Axe/

If you already have a PC (even just an old laptop or something, plug it into your TV with an hdmi cable) and any console controller (most of them work on PC without any adapter these days) that's all you need to spend.

      • +1

yeah I know, but sometimes it is nicer just to have the console. FYI I have the SNES mini and atari flashback. but I don't see the game value in this one, needs to be about half the price.

      • Theres something about retro remakes that are better than the PC (if done well).

Ill be dammed if I can figure out why though, I have over half a dozen remakes as well as original gear.

    • True, I never had a mega drive as a kid but I used to play t a cousins house, I remember being pretty bad at it, but I guess I was still quite young and didn't have a lot of chance to play with controllers at the time (I had a c64).

I picked up the previous US genesis from kogan for 90 bucks (using kogan credit so almost free) and it's been great. I found it provides most value paired up with a cheap standard Def projector so that the front room can support a console so the kids can be kicked out of the main room if I want to watch tv or play on the xbox

    • Silpheed is sick.

  • +9

Just a reminder that any Xbox One or Series can play Megadrive games (plus many other systems) without any mods.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/693927

As for this deal, extremely over priced.

    • Can run these (and even more complex games) in the browser of the consoles too, Quake 3 JS was fantastic on Xbox One…until they finally made my copy of Quake Arena Arcade back compat (god bless you, daddy spencer)

Edit: Oh shoot, also the PCSX2 standalone port is really good, I beat a few PS2 games via RA but mostly stuck to GameCube (which I still will in most cases, for the file size) but goddamn, yeah, the Xbox is running (profanity) laps around the PS5 for me. Genuinely don't like the odd time I turn the 5 on at this point lmao. Release Spdier-Man 2 already so I can sell the damn console.

  • Any word on an AU release or being able to buy an import on Amazon AU?

  • +5

Tired of console manufacturers jacking up hardware prices even as the console gets older?

    Hmmmm

  • +1

Seems like the pricing of mini consoles has been jacked just like everything else. SNES mini was something like $100-120 on launch about 5 years ago. Now we have nearly double the price for an arguably less desirable product….and let me guess, they will keep supply low in order to stimulate FOMO and generate sales….

    • +1

No argument it it. The SNES mini had better games.

  • Anyone know where I can get the CD attachment for this?

  • Is this console basically the same as the Sega Mini 1 but with different games?

    wow $200 for this?

I discovered Roms & emulators in year 2000 which was free on PC!

    • 1999 for me. Finding out I could play this new game called Pokémon everyone at school was talking about blew my mind.

      • +1

Yes, I was kinda late to the party.

Everyone was playing pokemon on their gameboys at school while I had to wait till I got home to play it hahaha. The true ozbargain way!

  • +1

    $200+.. no thanks.

  • why not just hack the original one ?

    • Yeah… I was thinking that as it has the same hardware I assume.

But the original one is hard to find now as well.

      • Nah these mini ones are just a cheap ARM system on chip (like a raspberry pi) running an emulator. They don’t have the same hardware as the original. That’s good and bad. The games are only as accurate as the emulator can make them but there is often the flexibility to install emulators for other systems.

Tired of console manufacturers jacking up hardware prices even as the console gets older?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/612347 89 bucks over a year ago

Yes, I know they're completely different beasts, and yes, I know ths is better, and so on, it just seemed funny to point it out. Like tbh I went looking for the Big W old school mini Mega Drives from before the NES Mini made everyone get in on this shit, I always regretted not picking up the portable one for 20/25 in the day. Point being, as far as old school games re-releases go, Sega is probably actually one of the worst in terms of price jacking

    • Mega Drive minis, they had made a tonne of them, ALL for well under 100 RRP, then they copied NES and did a better quality one and now it's over 200 as a "deal"
    • Sonic's latest re-release being a load of shit, missing a load of shit, and costing a goddamn pile of shit
-The Mega Drive classics series of games that constantly keeps getting re-released and usually with slightly less, like Sonic 3 no longer being in there, etc. but the price still going up

All that being said, I did coincidentally buy the Mega Drive set for Xbox One the other day (I know, I'm part of the problem) from Eneba for about 3 bucks, gone up to 4.06 AUD now, but still, (profanity) fantastic collection for those who don't want to spend a couple hundred on this https://www.eneba.com/xbox-sega-genesis-classics-xbox-live-k…

Probably should have opened with the more positive part

  • I think there is supposed to be very limited stock of these if the internet is to be believed…. may be a case of FOMO but if purchased and not used I suspect it will be easily recoverable on ebay for a good price down the track.

You only have to browse around ebay and look at the prices now for theTurbografx 16 Mini, Sega Mega Drive Mini (the last one, NOT the AT-games crap) and even the Sony Playstation 1 Classic and all tend to sell for twice their original RRP if not more.

    • I had to pay $200 and have it shipped here for an intellivision flashback.

  • +1

Desert strike! I remember playing that as a kid. I wish they would have revisited that series at some point. If only quackshot and road rash could return, emulation is an option that I'll have to try just to play them again.

    • +1

Great game. There were a few sequels. Jungle Strike and Urban Strike on Megadrive and SNES. Then Soviet Strike and Nuclear Strike on PlayStation and Saturn. My memory is that all of them were good

I only found out recently that there was meant to be another one called Future Strike but it never released as a Strike game. It eventually came out as Future Cop: LAPD and apparently has similar gameplay.

  • +1

    No Shaq Fu, no deal.

  • +2

I like the mini consoles as a collection, I use them once (if at all) and pack them away and display the boxes. I was really hoping for an Australian release of this but it's looking like that isn't going to happen.

To all the negative comments, this is official, legal and looks cool. If that means nothing to you, don't buy it. Hell I'll still be playing all these (and more) on my MiSTer, but I still want one!

    • The controllers will probably work well on the MiSTer if you don't use SNAC

  • +1

    This is… A terrible deal.
