Sony Xperia I IV (*Xperia one Mark four)

Definitely not for everyone (specially price wise), but this phone can be an amazing option for (photo/camera) enthusiasts or people who like different things that 99% of the population don't know exist. :)

In the US, the 512GB version of this phone costs around USD 1,600.

Becextech offers local 1 year warranty (provided by a third party, check the Warranty tab).

-Product Description

Bridging the gap between mobile and professional photography
The SONY Xperia 1 iii had already an impressive camera setup and the Mark IV has two major updates to the cameras. While the setup is similar, the selfie camera has been upgraded from 8MP to 12MP. The main camera has been built together with SONY’s camera team and features a continuous stepless zoom rarely seen in mobile phones.

All the cameras in the main setup support 4K@120fps, SteadyShot with FlawlessEye, Eye AF and Realt Time Object Tracking.

The best phone for streaming?
The SONY Xperia PRO-I saw already heavy emphasis on videography and streaming and SONY has had streamers and content creators in mind when designing the Xperia 1 IV. SONY has made an exclusive deal with Youtube allowing channel creation and streaming directly to Youtube without subscriber restrictions. For vloggers and video enthusiasts, you can also edit your videos directly on the phone without the need for a separate computer with SONY’s proprietary software. You can also stream content via 5G from SONY Alpha cameras.

Fast became even faster
The Xperia 1 mark IV boasts the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 gen 1 processor performing up to 30% better on benchmark tests. The 4K 120Hz display is familiar from its predecessor but SONY has fixed one of the issues of the Xperia 1 iii making the IV display as much as 50% brighter.

The device is cased in Corning Gorilla Glass Victus and an aluminum frame providing excellent protection from scratches and damage and the phone is IP68 rated. The phone has a 5000mAh battery and it supports 30W fast charging capable of filling the battery to 50% in half an hour. Note that the phone does not come with a charger.

In comparison to the 1 iii the Xperia 1 IV has better camera, brighter display, faster performance, improved audio, faster charging, and a larger battery making this one of the best phones in the market.

For over $1000 I would avoid a phone without manufacturer warranty.

I love Sony and I like the design of this phone but I value my money and time more in the case where I need to claim warranty.

    • -8

I understand your point but the two times I needed warranty for my phones was for my Nokia 6131 back in 2007, and then for my HTC One, in 2014 (when I actually had to send my phone to Germany as I had bought the phone in Berlin when travelling). Nokia gave my money back after I threatened them as they couldn't repair the phone, HTC sent me a new phone from Germany.

No issues with any phone since (HTC, Sony Ericsson/Sony, Motorola, Huawei, Google).
Therefore, although I would usually avoid a phone without manufacturer warranty, I'd consider one with local warranty even if provided by a third party.

Individuals might risk not having warranty instead of buying another boring phone with warranty.

(Off topic) That's why I bought my HTC One in Germany. HTC was not present in the country where I was living, and I needed something different. It was risky, the phone ended up having a known issue with the camera. My interaction with HTC support in Germany was kind of amazing. They asked me to send to them, which I did using the cheapest postal option. It took about a month, another 7-10 days for them to analyse the phone, then I got an email with the good news. Asked them to send the phone to my friend in Germany and my friend sent it to me. Used the new phone for another 2-3 years. Really loved that HTC phone.

I'm an Android user, have a Pixel 5 and am/was tending to buy the Pixel 7 Pro now. I find all the other phones really boring and lacking innovative features. I don't see anything exciting in the phones that are available in Australia at the moment. Huawei has its own problems (no Google services unless you modify the software), Honor Magic4 Ultimate is around $2,000… So my tendency is to buy the Pixel 7 Pro, but I could "risk" 1,300 to buy something different.

I think the Sony phones don't have volte and VOWIFI, which might be a deal breaker for some

    • i think it has it with voda and optus but not telstra

    • +1

      This has Volte and 5G

      • +4

The phone supports it but our local network operators won't whitelist these phones for VoLTE compatibility. Essentially carrier blocked for VoLTE, VoWiFi and 5G.

        • +1

Telstra the only one stopping it. Works on voda and optus

The last time I considered getting a Sony, I found there's apparently a big problem with using them here in Australia.

Apparently it'll be a massive hassle (if it's even possible) to get 5G to work…so be warned.

Sony's Mobile division no longer has a presence in Australia so any warranty work will be a hassle too.

    • +4

It'd be an orphan phone here. No way I'd pay this much; probably have to be a less than half this price to take the gamble.

  • sony surely has to be making peanuts in the phone market, they have pretty much died out

    • +3

IIRC they left the Australian market because of poor sales.

The last Sony phone i had was a z5. I tuned out during the XZ period but the 1/5/10s made me pay attention again. Pity they don't sell locally.

      • +3

Which was a direct result of lack of availability, high prices and poor advertising.

  • +5

Whirlpool thread says VoLTE + 5G works for Optus/Vodafone amazingly for once, but not Telstra, so be aware.

An ideal phone that needs a bigger user base :/

Great phone. But the warranty not great. And the phone apparently over heats.
I don’t know about phones but I brought a Sony VAIO back in the day laptop. $4000aud in the early 00s. Big money. And it was terrible. Ended up just getting a MacBook which had usable battery and equally powerful hardware. Sonys lost their touch for me but I like the look of this phone. Shame that when I googled it I didn’t land on positive reviews.

I see this mob still gouge with shipping. Title should reflect this.

I had a horrible experience with BecexTech about a year ago. The Xperia I ordered from them turned out to be faulty out of the box and would go into a reset loop. I notified them on the same day I received it. It had to go back to Hong Kong. After confirming it was faulty, they refused to refund me as per their policy, then changed their statement saying the phone was perfectly fine. After months of back and forth with these guys I ended up paying their $350 'restocking fee' just to get a part refund back because apparently I returned a fully functional phone to them. So much pain an suffering. Beware.

That's terrible business. Thanks for letting us know. In this case, probably better to buy from Amazon to have Amazon's backup. Still, I understand that grey imports are risky.

    • +2

I remember walking into an Apple store with faulty lightening port on my iPhone. Took it away for 30 minutes then hooked me up with a new phone. None of this restocking fee nonsense.

    • "After confirming it was faulty, they refused to refund me as per their policy,"

They confirm its faulty and then said it's perfectly fine?

      • Yup. I sent them videos of the phone resetting as well! When they initially received it they confirmed it was faulty. They then backtracked on this stating 'the person was a new employee and didn't know what they were talking about'.

One xperia fan comes to say Hi to other fans of Xperia Hiiiiiii

  • Guys I used both Xperia 1 II and Xperia 5 III. I would said lets grab another brand to avoid the buggy firmware that never get fixed.

  • Where does someone get a phone specced like this that isn't fragile?

Sick of seeing designs with curved edges, glass backs and no bezel screens.

These idiots put so much effort into making a phone pretty that they forget to make it practical.
