Pity it's just a FHD screen, otherwise it'll be a cracker of a deal if QHD.

    • +6

Less Power to drive = less heat = less throttling

      • +2

This is great if using an external monitor, but I would prefer QHD if mostly using the laptop screen.

      • +3

I like less power used, maybe it also helps battery life a bit.
Plus (for me) FHD means using 100% scaling on both laptop and external display, so no weird looking apps when moving between screens.

      • Surely if you're gaming seriously you're docked and have an external monitor handy.

    • +2

Hmm it really depends. My Zephyrus is a QHD screen but is only 60Hz. The other option was a FHD 120Hz. FHD in my situation is a significantly better choice over the QHD in terms of gaming performance. At least all the other specs of the laptop are solid. 1080P 144Hz is quite solid on a screen this size + as dofdaus said, an external monitor can always be used here.

      • +2

Yeah at 15" you're really not going to get much benefit of QHD

    HODL for 13th gen w/4070!

    • How long need to hold to get w/4070 at Same price?

      • +7

About a month before the 5070 is released

        • +5

Then why dont just hold for 5070 if hold now/0/

@yuisakas: Better to wait for the 6070.

      • I'll check - will get back to you last week.

      • Depends. It’ll probably melt though.

    • I don't think there is a 4070, there's 2 4080s, the lower tier 12gb one being the "4070" as far as I know.

      Also, check the benchmarks here.

      https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/y2e7rg/4080_p…

Possible it would be cheaper to get a 3090ti that outperforms 12gb 4080, and almost performs same as 16gb 4080… And will likely be cheaper once 40xx series drops. Heaps of second hand cards probably be for sale too.

the biggest problem with these guys is that 300w power adapter is a BRICK yet without it, this damn thing will last 10 minutes.

  • 17in screen is better

after being a big fan of Aorus 17G, I would say that Lenovo L5P is a better choice in the price range. 3070 with QHD panel was selling for $2k on eBay recently. get that.

    • Link please?

      • That one is sold out

    • What is it about the Lenovo that you like more?

      • mux switch (I know that Aorus 17G didn't have one), and the QHD+ panel is growing on me - perfect pairing with full power 3070

although I didn't go for that model, I went for Legion 5i Pro, I mentioned it on my CashRewards deal. with 16% cashback, and $200 in Lenovo Rewards, the 12700H/3070Ti/32GB DDR5/512GB config comes down to $2200 effectively. that was a solid deal in my books, if you don't mind paying $2849 and then wait for cashback and Lenovo Rewards to go through

compared to my old Aorus 17G the only thing I am missing is mechanical keyboard with per key RGB. 5i Pro is a beast, and AMD version isn't far behind

I was also saying that FHD is the sweet spot, to avoid scaling and to push out solid framerates in games, but once I went QHD that beautiful panel in L5P convinced me. even though I can't say I really care about the 16:10 screen ratio in games, I'd rather it was wider, not taller. those drags in Mordhau be unreal

        • What cash back? Can you elaborate please?

          • @DontNeedThis: Cashrewards had an increased 16% cashback on Lenovo website couple weeks ago. hence ordering the $2849 laptop triggered $450 cashback which should be approved around end of Dec

    • That was 5800H though.

      • but for gaming GPU matters more, and that was a full powered 3070

    • This Gigabyte covers 72%NTSC.
The MSI only has 45%NTSC coverage, and has a Max-Q GPU, which, if I understand correctly, is held back a little.

  • What's the sRGB on this monitor?

    You know what I want?

A gaming laptop but with either no screen at all or a shit screen for basic config and use. I can then use my awesome external monitor for gaming.

I want the form factor of a laptop, maybe bit bigger with greater power and cooling, that can be used exclusively for external gaming monitor.

I hate the size of PC's and just want a high performance SLAB to hide away.

    • a 'pelican case' pc build might be worth considering if using an external monitor

    • Something like a minisforum PC?
Not sure if you can get them in Australia easily

congratulations! you just invented an Xbox

      • Lol you're not wrong, but I much prefer choosing components, and even though choice is limited in laptops vs PC, it's still more scalable than console.

Honestly, the closest thing to what I'd like is the Steam Deck, they are looking mighty fine.

        • haha yes I was just kidding. I would love the same thing, I was very excited about those Intel NUC's with integrated AMD graphics which were promising 1050 Ti performance, but things didn't work as smoothly as promised.

Same, it's a beast. Huge benefit on the 17.3 model is the mech keyboard. Not sure this model has it.

Thermals look a bit sketchy for this model, unless if you are particularly smitten by the AORUS design, you're probably better off elsewhere - like waiting for the Ryzen 5800H RTX 3070 Legion to go on sale for $2k again.

The only comprehensive review I could find for this laptop was by a Taiwanese site, which is still in English but is not formatted the same way as a notebookcheck review for example

Of note the CPU temperatures are very high even for a 12700H, I can't replicate all of these tests as the Alienware x14 I have was only ever offered up to a 75W RTX 3060 but it has the same 115W PL1 12700H as this laptop. Replicating the same AIDA64 CPU & FPU stress test conditions, at the 10minute mark my CPU temps were 67-70C, while this laptop's 12700H hit 90C at the 10minute mark in AIDA64 FPU (and the x14 is ~1cm thinner).

Many tests don't show the random high temperature spikes (sometimes to 100c where it then throttles) you often find on Alder lake laptops in normal use so its not a good sign if its temperature is close to 100C even under a sustained stress/gaming load.

Parts of the keyboard deck such as around the arrow keys were close to a 50C surface temperature which can't be comfortable to use. It kind of defeats the purpose of a gaming laptop if it's portability is ruined by having to lug around an external keyboard because the built-in keyboard is unbearably hot to use while gaming.

    • Is that the same model? The specs say GeForce RTX 3070 Max-P Design
The review lists Graphics Chip: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 GDDR6 8GB Laptop GPU, MAX-Q Boost Clock 1620 MHz / 130 W.

      • Yes, they're both the same 130W RTX 3070, which you can confirm in the Scorptec listing's specs.

Max-Q and Max-P refer to the power limit of the GPU with Max-Q usually being lower powered ones within the same model and Max-P being the higher powered ones.

NVIDIA themselves no longer use these terms when RTX 3000 mobile GPUs came out but I think its a typo in the review in this example.

130W is towards the higher end of RTX 3070 mobile TGPs and should be a Max-P, there are certainly higher powered RTX 3070s like the 140W one found in the Legion 5 Pro but I would say a Max-Q 3070 would have a TGP around 100W.

        • Ta. I know what they mean. I was unsure if it was the same due to the difference in listing.

Not sure if gigabyte have improved these but I had one with 11th gen CPU/3070 and returned it because it had the most offensive coil whine in the fans that was just unbearable. Would sit there whistling away like a kettle.
