Citi Premier Credit Card: 150,000 Citi Rewards Points ($4,000 Spend in 90 Days, 50,000 Points in 2nd Year), $150 First Year Fee

660

I’ve been searching around to churn my current big4 credit card and found this.

Compared to the recent prestige card offer:

Pros
- $10k min credit limit (half of pretige’s)
- Annual fee ($150 for 1st year compared to pretiges’s $350)
- 20k citi points ≈ $1k gift cards (so half of the hit on your credit and annual fee but you still get 2/3 of pretige bonus, points-wise)

Cons
- 2 Priority passes only each year (unlimited for prestige, but triple think about it if you really need to travel that much these days)
- No 4th night free offer
- Points earning capability (int’l: 2/3, domestic: 1/2 of prestige - but you need to swipe additional $20,000 domestic transactions to cover the first year’s $200 annual fee difference if you were on a prestige)
- Assumably easier approval?

Bonus
200,000 bonus Citi reward Points
when you spend $4,000 in the first 90 days from approval and keep your card for over 12 months.
—> 150k points when $4k spending is met and 50k after 12 months. (kudos to @TheMills)

Perks
-Earn Citi reward Points
Earn up to 2 Citi reward Points per $1 spent on Eligible Transactions, up to 200,000 Points over a 12 month period.

-Priority Pass
Receive two complimentary airport lounge visits every year when you enrol in Priority Pass.

-International Travel Insurance
Purchase your flights with your Citi credit card and you may be covered for medical expenses, cancellation, loss or theft of personal items and more.

  • Can this be converted to krisflyer?

    • yes citi rewards converts at a rate of 2.5 points to either krisflyer or emirates points. 2 points for virgin.

they do occasionally do deals where it might get an upgrade for redemption usually an extra 30% more points or something, but mostly with virgin.

$150 in the first year and each subsequent year if you spend $48,000 on eligible purchases or cash advances in the previous year. Otherwise $300.

First time exploring this… Open the card, pay a couple months rent, close the card after 12 months, get $850? How do people usually take advantage of these offers?

Is the second year's $300 unavoidable under these conditions?

    • In my experience, if you close the card the fees are generally prorata (may not be the case with all banks) - but it's also possible to get them to waive fees altogether and keep the card.

      • Which bank other than NAB have you been ar to prorata refund on fees?

        • Citibank have provided me with full refund when asked. Nab have recently acquired citibank card operations in Australia also.

        • +1

Credit Card (Qantas edition) Pro-rata refund of annual fee list

NAB may be the only one to do it consistently. It's never been offered to me throughout my churning but then again I've never asked for it (with the exception of NAB), which is a mistake. It costs nothing to ask and you may be pleasantly surprised if lucky.

There have been some reports of success with ANZ and pre-NAB Citibank.

Based on past comments, I asked Westpac for a refund of the annual fee when closing the card after having it for one month. The customer service rep issued a refund in exchange for me giving him positive feedback on the post-call survey lol.

I recall past comments suggested with Amex cards if you switch the card type to the no fee version then you should get pro-rata of the annual fee.

        • ANZ and Citibank (in the past)

      • I believe only NAB do this

      • +2

In my experience, if you close the card the fees are generally prorata

That’s not my experiences across 10+ cards I’ve churned, including some citi cards

        • I have Nab refunded the fee for my last 3 cards.

Yeah I’d just give the extra 50k a miss. Holding a card for the full 12 months means paying a second full annual fee. You’d be better off cancelling ASAP, letting the 12 month waiting period expire, and signing up for a new card fresh.

  • +2

Would love to go for this but for some reason Citi credit criteria doesn’t like me.
I have tried a few times now with different cards but always instant reject (don’t think even does credit check as it comes up with the reject instantly).
Using the exact same info I have got $15-20k credit limit cards with st george, cba, anz, hsbc, Suncorp and Amex all in the past 12 months with no issues.
Wonder what Citi criteria is that is so different to all the others…

    • Applications are processed by NAB now, so you might have better luck. I was the same in the past but was approved a few months ago when applying for a similar card since NAB acquired citi.

  • Is Payall applicable to this CC ?

  • +3

Note that for Citibank, after you have closed the card, ask - can do via web chat, for prorated fee refund.

Got about $110 refunded from the $175 AF - i kept the card for nearly 5 months.

    • I think this is now available on Citi since NAB bought the credit card business

  • Whats the rate from citi point to qantas points?

  • Citi is a pain as they often knock you back then you have a credit app on ur credit file. So you then feel like applying for a different card for the sign on bonus and that bank wants to know why you’re applying for so many cards.. I stay away from citi now.

Title and descriptions should be revised, 150k points in the first year only plus 50k points in the subsequent year by paying for annual fee.

  • How much are these points worth in $ terms

    • $50 = 10,500 points

  • +8

Some point math, 150k first year points work out to be:
    $720 Woolworths - $500 x 1, $200 x 1, $20 x 1 in Woolworths gift cards, $720 total, with 3,900 points remaining.
    $700 Coles - $500 x 1, $200 x 1 in Coles gift cards, $700 total, with 8,100 points remaining.
61,600 Krisflyer miles (Points transfer 2.5 CitiRewards points 1 Krisflyer miles)
77,000 Velocity points (Points transfer 2 CitiRewards points 1 Velocity points)

    • +5

Love your site and all the great tips mate.
You could even add the 4000 points you'll earn on the $4000 spend required to get an extra $20 gift card by adding to the 3,900 remaining

    • 61,600 Krisflyer miles (Points transfer 2.5 CitiRewards points 1 Krisflyer miles)
77,000 Velocity points (Points transfer 2 CitiRewards points 1 Velocity points)

How are you getting these results?

I would have thought that 150k Citi points would amount to:
      • 60k KrisF
      • 75k Velocity FF

By my 'points maths', the ANZ Rewards card [PointHacks promo] has a lower spend criteria
and 1st year annual fee, to get the 75k Velocity FF.

However, ANZ Rewards do not have the Priority Pass benefits,
and the Citi card is actually a very 'responsive' to use in U.S. or in travels
(well, when I was in USA the last time).
Maybe the Citi insurances has better coverage, than the ANZ one…but I don't know & just thinking aloud.

  • +2

20k points is not worth $1k of gift cards

  • Any payall with this card? And if so would payall transactions count towards the spend requirement?

    • Yes. Yes.

      • +1

So you are telling me all i need to do is set up payall to any other acount, transfer the required spending and then thats it?

        • +1

          Eligible Transaction is defined in the Citi Rewards Program Terms and Conditions and means;

          • any purchase excluding (but not limited to) Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, BPAY payments, purchases of foreign currency and travellers cheques, transactions made in operating a business, payments to other Citi branded accounts, bank fees and charges such as interest and ATM charges, transactions made using Points and government related transactions. Government related transactions include transactions with government or semi-government entities, or relating to services provided by or in connection with government (for example but not limited to transactions made at Australia Post, payments to the Australian Taxation Office, council rates, motor registries, tolls, parking stations and meters, fares on public transport, fines and court related costs). Please note that whether or not a transaction is an Eligible Transaction will be determined based on information provided either by the merchant or the relevant financial institution (including information about the type of business conducted by the merchant). This means that, for example, spend with certain merchants may be characterised as spend with a government related entity and therefore not an Eligible Transaction, even if that merchant is not in fact a government related entity; or
          • any Citi PayAll Payments (for Domestic Spend only, International Spend is excluded)

          Only domestic spend. take note.

  • +1 looks like a good offer!
So i am reading it right an have not missed it but i dont see any mention of restrictions where you have had any Citi bank card within last 12months?
Asking as I had recently cancelled my Citi card.

  • -2

Warning: Citi does not support Google Pay

    • +3

It's already supported starting from late last month - at least that what i found out from Whirlpool

I've also added my card to G-Wallet without issue.

Note, it's seems only supported for Citi branded cards only at the moment - ie not for Coles, Kogan, Suncorp etc, cards that backed by Citibank.

      • Oh nice! That solves a massive problem for me because Samsung Pay is absolute shit. Weird they didn't tell customers themselves though.

        • Weird they didn't tell customers themselves though.

You think they would put this in big banner here, but you only find under the Samsung tab with a small print "Google Pay is coming soon. Check back here for future updates" ! Seems they not really good with promo their products.

      • Kogan card can be used on goggle pay and apple pay just fine

    • Can confirm Google Pay works with this credit card

  • +1

Is it possible to apply for both Citi Premier and Prestige and get the points on both? Like the ANZ black rewards and the ANZ black Qantas?

    • Yes, if you get approved for both. There's nothing in T&C against this, ie try to find a clause about "not for those already owned such and such card".

  • Anyone know how long it takes for the payment to show on the other end once the payall transaction has cleared?

    • The latest should be on your PayAll scheduled date. I've found it usually a day earlier - sometimes can be 2 days earlier if the scheduled date is fall in weekend or public holidays.

      • Thanks. However I meant more on the other side (I.e the person receiving the amount).

        • +1

That was exactly my point. The receiving end will get the fund in their account on the date that you scheduled your PayAll or earlier.

          • @timhn: Interesting as the money has gone out from the Citi account but the receiving end have not received it yet!

  • Sounds like hi flyer talk
So far for a bargainer it looks like far away?

  • +1

How long after canceling the card do you have to use the points? Or do you lose accrued points straight away?

  • i rent car many times and found citibank only covers $2000 worth of excess, which is very low. when most vehicle rent providers charge $4000 - $5000 excess.

otherwise good card and good deal for points

  • +2

    Approved within 10 minutes..

    • No wait!!! Do you have any relationship with Citibank/NAB? Existing customer and salary deposited into Citibank?

      • +1

I had mine approved within minutes as well.
I have a debit card with nab and one with citi, and they are hardly being used with close to 0 balance.

    • How long did it take for you to receive the card? I'm keen to buy flights with it, but unsure as to how long it will take to dispatch.

      • +1

Approved on 17/10 and received the card on 21/10 .. I am impressed by the speed

        • +1

Thanks for letting me know. My approval took about 5 hours - hopefully the plastic comes soon!

  • what if you held a NAB credit card in last 12 months ? can you still get this one ?

    • You can get this even if you're holding a Citbank, provided your income can cover all the liabilities

  • Is there a 12 month cooling period on Citi cards?

    • No.

If you read the T&C, Citibank never have something along "Offer not available where you currently hold blah-blah cards …. in last xx months"

  • I read the terms, but how long did it take you to receive the bonus points from when meeting the bonus critiera?

I made some large PayAll payments but from what I can see they count, and my reward point balance is now >4000.

    • First point under heading "Things you should know"

      • Thanks I read that - I wanted to see if people had personal experience, eg. it was only a few days after vs waiting the full 8 weeks

        • Probably few days after statement.

  • Did anyone get their bonus points from sign up with only PayAll transactions? They showed up as bonus points and not regular reward points on my statement.

  • Anyone getting points on this card after the Citi Prestige? I have a Citi Presitige and already got 300,000 points but thinking of getting this one as well. From the T&C I don’t see any reason one can get points for both but just to check if anyone actually do this?

    • would it hit your credit score significant given you apply both in short time?

      • I am not sure, but that really matters here in Australia?

My understanding is that if you apply for many cards in a short time, even if you have recently closed other cards they are still in the system and some banks might view your application as “dishonest”. For example you declare an existing limit of 5,000 while they still have your two recently closed cards in the system with 6,000 limit each.

But other banks just understand there is lag and ask you for letters of closure.

  • Sorry if this has been asked before, I am new to this.
I currently hold the Citi Premier card (Specifically, the Qantas card), and just wondering if there is any waiting period between the time I close my current card and apply for another one of the same card and still get the bonus points?
I think it is typically 12 months waiting period for other banks, but I wasn't able to find the information on Citibank, as I don't think it is written on the website.

  • Is the travel insurance any use given it doesn't cover COVID? Can you get COVID-only insurance to still use the insurance benefits of this card?

  • Just got mine approved today… Pain in the ass to apply…The application did not ask the right questions…not enough space to fill in additional details so it leads to long approval time.

  • Got my 150,000 points today in my rewards account. Just did a Velocity transfer to 75,000. Woo
    On to the next churn

    • Cheers mate! How long did it take for you to receive the bonus points after you met the spending requirement?
