Any of these viable to build your own NAS?

    • +1

depends what you need to run on it

      • File backups mostly but it would probably also include plex or similar in the future.

        • +1

it'll do all of that well. Though you will run into some limitations with transcoding in plex. But easy enough to plonk in an extra drive or two and have a little bit of redundancy with a relatively performant CPU.

          • @matthewperk: Have a look at Jellyfin but the CPU won't be much good for transcoding or converting.

        • +1

yeah should be alright, for plex you will probably need to get a low profile GPU (1050ti or similar - I would recommend) for transcoding.

btw jellyfin is 10000000x better than plex. Try both of them out and see which you like better ;)

          • @Leho: Tried Jellyfin for a month. Went back to Plex.

            I wish them well but.

          • +7

@Leho: Jellyfin has a lot of promise but no way it's significantly bettter than Plex. It's missing a lot of smaller features of Plex. Its metadata matching isn't nearly as good either.

I've tried Jellyfin a few times (have an up to date docker install on my NAS) so just need to start it up and let it rescan. Every time I try, I go back to Plex pretty quickly.

            • +3

@Shonky: I think that jellyfin with plugins is way better but its all personal preference I guess 🤷‍♂️

              • +1

@Leho: What devices do you use? I liked jelly however device support was limited. No LG C1 app for example.

                • +1

@OzzyBrak: not sure if im allowed to say here, but I host jellyfin on an ultra (dot) cc seedbox, and use the android, web & chromecast apps. works perfectly + free & open source 😁😁

pretty sure there is an lg app but might be a bit difficult to setup 🤷‍♂️

                  • +1

@Leho: Yeah. LG app if you register as an lg developer or something.

My issue with browser to chromecast is my lg tv supports more formats without transcoding than the browser. I much prefer direct play of hdr content.

                    • +1

                      @OzzyBrak: you said you had a c1,

                      https://us.lgappstv.com/main/tvapp/detail?appId=1030579

says it can be installed on 2021 models and higher, pretty sure the c1 is from 2021 so try install that. doesn't need dev account I think. might fix your transcoding issues 🤷‍♂️

                      • @Leho: Looks like they finally released a client for webos in July 2022. Thanks for letting me know.

                • @OzzyBrak: The C1 got a JellyFin app months ago.
Edit: Just read further down the chain and saw you've already been informed.

    • +1

Performance wise, sure. Space for disks not so great.

You can fit one 3.5" or one 2.5" in the standard location and that will be it. Anything more than that will be "non standard" and a squeeze at the very least.

    • High power consumption, get an SFF one with a single 2.5" hard drive and upgrade it to a 4TB one. Get a USB external 4GB drive and put Veeam on it also to do your backups.

      • Even better for power draw, get the laptop. USB-3 external HDD is fine for your home server (warez/porn/movies/mp3). Bonus UPS (if the battery is not dead.)

        • The tiny little sff ones are basically a laptop anyway. They even use a laptop power brick.

          • @Zondor: They still use a different chips. The T-series uses less power than standard desktop chips, but more than U-series laptop chips.

    • +2

If you're planning on using it purely as a NAS, it easily has the performance for it. Where you will struggle is the drives, these cases don't fit many drives in them, and external drives can be clunky.

But performance wise it will do the job and more.

If you are planning to go beyond the realm of standard NAS use…such as plex/emby, dockers, other server applications….it's all dependant on what you plan to use it for.

My first Emby server using unraid was a $50 second hand PC from marketplace (weaker than the ones in this post), and they did the job decently. However ofcourse as i become more and more of a power user and wanted to get more out of my system, i started to need a more powerful unit.

Regardless, i recommend starting small and simple, then as you find other uses, grow from there.

  • I might get the dell 2in1 will it last 6hrs and screen is ips touchscreen yeah does it come w a pen

    • +2

No way it will last 6 hrs. Even new, these would've lasted 4 hrs max.

Assume you'll need to replace the battery and/or run it from an external battery pack. For the price, that's not a bad solution.

      • +1

Fair, do you think it'll come w the pen though, I see it used to be $249 or so and now it's $120 so must be a steal right haha

    • no way the battery will last 6 hours. Read the description on the page regarding condition.

      • -1

        geez ok stop negging me

      • yeah need to factor in the battery replacement if you get this

        Grade B :

NOTE Grade B Condition : MAY CONTAIN THE FOLLOWING
MINOR SCRATCHES CASING; MINOR SCREEN BRUISE; MINOR SCREEN STAINS; LOW BATTERY CAPACITY; FRAYED/WEAR KEYBOARD/TRACKPAD, LOOSE HINGE
3 Months warranty doesn't apply to the issues mentioned above.
It is fully tested and functional so that the condition will not impact its functionality (EXCEPT BATTERY LIFE).

        • +1

well I brought two, they took quite a while to ship for sure and when they did arrive, one had a pretty bad hinge sadly, it would go all the way down past 175° pretty quickly unless U be super careful with it then it won't. The other hinge is a lot better but still probably worse than new, they run alright, screen is super good and if I could I wish I didn't buy the other probably. they run pretty hot if U have stuff open but I wish it could handle like twitch steam at 1080p without freezing up and lagging constantly

  • what ssd model do you use to upgrade to 500GB from 128/256GB?

  • +1

    Oh man, DDR3L?

    • I KNOW, an absolute pain to find

      • Is it 2x4GB or 1x8GB?

  • Thanks, ordered a couple of 2 in 1's.

  • Is it possible to install a GPU in this desktop?

    • +3

you can get low profile graphics cards like the GTX1650 LP - https://www.ebay.com.au/p/3039905983?iid=175141870176
These would actually make these into a decent 1080p compact gaming computer (though I'd probably get 16gb of ram upgraded from the 8gb)

      • Pretty sure it can't do these since the available slot is at the bottom. So single slot only.

    • +1

yep! a low profile will fit nicely, just take care with newer gen GPUs BIOS may be an issue

      • Will the power supplier be a issue?

    • Single slot, low profile. Aka 1030, although there are some 6400 variants around as well.

      • RX6400 will fit a bit better than most 1650's, but need to look at PCIe 3 performance rather than regular reviews first.

Without a brand new PCIe 4 board, the RX6400 loses up to 30% performance due to only having 4 lanes.

        • +2

6400 won't just fit a bit better than 1650, it might actually fit if you can find a single slot low profile version.

There is no space for a dual slot card in this box.

I don't know why OP or others around saying a low profile will do. IT WON'T. Look at the box, there is only the one x16 slot and its right at the bottom next to the PSU, there is no space for a dual slot card like the majority of 1050, 1650 and 6400 around.

          https://dl.dell.com/topicspdf/optiplex-3040m-desktop_owners-…

Look on pg 23, look at where the x16 slot is, and the psu right next to it.

    • +2

      See here.
Power supply and space within the tower are factors.
GT1030 Low Profile is probably the best you can put in it.

    • As others have stated a low profile goes well. I have one with a low-profile GPU and low profile WIFI/Bluetooth and it ran great. Just make sure this case has a front fan, as some models (mainly newer models) have removed the front fan and the pins of the board, which causes the GPU's fan to make noise.

      • You need a LOW PROFILE AND SINGLE SLOT.

There is no physical space for a dual slot card.

        • The one I had had 2 slots (as you can see on the back of the case). It had two PCIs slow, 1 being (long version I think its 16) and then 1 really small one (I think x8). Its the same as my current OptiPlex as I moved both cards across. There is also a plug on the board for Graphics

Edit: From memory 1 was white and the other was blue (sorry I don't know hardware well)

          • +1

@Froot Loops: The X16 is at the bottom, its just a X1 at the top. Good luck fitting a video card in the x1

Do you actually have a 3040, or just one looks similar to it? The 9020s etc had two full length slots, with the fast x16 at the bottom. So many took a penalty by using the slower full length slot. But this one literally WILL NOT FIT.

  • as 6th Gen so no luck for Win11 for now

    • Officially anyway, easily bypassed.

    • +1

Win10 is still supported for a couple more years, so even if you have to bin the computer after that (you won't) they work out to a bit more than a dollar per week, which is dirt-cheap by any measure.

      • +3

Windows 10 will be supported significantly longer than they want to admit, they had a billion computers update to it & Win11 is too restricted to reach that level in the next 5 yrs.

  • Is this available on your ebay store so I can use my ebay plus for free delivery?

  • What would be good low end graphics card for this? Old games on low settings.

    • 1650 LP the only one that would fit.

      • +1

        Someone disagrees above

      • +3

Again, there is no space for a dual slot low profile. You need a single slot low profile.

      • you always can use gpu riser?

  • +1

Is there any space inside for any additional drives? 2.5 or 3.5?

      • Thanks. You can swap but you can't add additional drives.

        • There is plenty of room to Mount the 2.5 SSD somewhere else, even just some double sided tape, and use the bay for a 3.5”. There are three SATA ports, and if there isn’t a spare SATA power cable you can buy a splitter for a few bucks.

          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/201806472401

I went NVMe in my current Plex system (Precision 3420 SFF) , but I did this with a previous Optiplex Plex build for years (2.5 SSD boot, 3.5 storage) and it worked a treat.

  • +2

Give us some micro 7500t+ pls.

    • Me too, looking out for this

  • Any windows 11 computers or laptops, used forlight office duties, browsing .

    • +1

These would run windows 11 fine, you just need to bypass the install requirements.

    • Buy one of the Optiplex for $120 and run it on Windows 10. At that price you can't go wrong. Worry about Windows 11 in a couple years if you have to.

  • Went to get a postage estimate - any reason you don't ship to Northern Rivers NSW (2480) or a suburb in Canberra (2905)?

  • +5

Currently running a HP 800 G2 SFF i7-6700 with a 1650 super hanging off the side of it powered by sata to 6 pin adaptor. Dodgy and cheap 1080p gaming if you can live with a card sticking out of a case

  • +1

What is the wattage of the PSUs in each of these models?

    • +2

Any actual reason for negging a simple question to determine if my low profile 1650 will work well in the system? The G2 in particular could come with a variety of wattages depending on the config that it was originally ordered in. If it's put in the comments section it saves the OP repeating themselves multiple times in DMs/emails

    • They're usually between 200W and 300W.

  • Worth an upgrade over my current optiplex 9020 with a 4590 in it? (Would transfer my good ram and SSD + low profile GT1030)

    • +1

      Personally I wouldn't, I'd wait for an 8th gen

      • which model is 8th gen?

what is the current dell model out now..
ie how many models are after 8th gen

        • Currently 12th gen but you are not going to get anything cheap obviously. 8th gen ex office PC's should start appearing soon enough as businesses upgrade

    • Interested to know as well.

  • Hey OP,
You may wish to mention if this has a front fan or not. Dell didn't supply them with all of the SFF (mainly newer ones) and removed the pins for a fan, which causes them to make a lot more noise than the ones with fans.

  • No shipping to my postcode…..brutal lol

  • @FuseTechAu No shipping available to 6026 WA?

  • My Dell Inspiron has lasted me 9 years so I am going to give them another shot

  • No shipping to SA CBD 5000 either, bummer

    • Not even to NSW, 2000 !!!

      • The estimator seems broken, add to cart and begin to check out to see

  • No delivery to 4109

    • Shipping estimate doesn't seem to be working. It said they don't ship to my address but once I proceeded to place an order no problem with shipping.

      • +1

Okay so i have a look and yes the shipping estimate is not currently working with the new Auspost system. Will be updating soon however the shipping on checkout works Australia wide!

  • +1

    Hey OP,

Any batches with 7 or 8 series chips with QuickSync?

  • Bought 2in1. My first refurbished product order and step towards sustainability. Hope it's not my last.

  • +1

Ignore the shipping estimate not working and try proceeding.

  • Does this have WiFi card if not how much on top?

  • Where do you guys ship to? I have tried all postcodes I know in Sydney and none of it can be shipped… Might as well list this as VIC only.
