                @apsilon: What about native wildlife?

                • @jv: Can't control them. I'm fairly certain more would be killed by cars each year than from eating a weed that had just been sprayed with a herbicide. If you actually did nothing that had any risk to it then you'd actually do nothing.

FWIW I use a selective herbicide a couple of times per year and it's had no effect on local wildlife. My garden has dozens of lizards, countless insects, lots of bird life and a stray cat that likes to hang around and I've seen eating the grass at times.

If you want to kill the weeds in your lawn, then use this: https://www.mitre10.com.au/amgrow-bin-die-selective-lawn-wee…

It will only kill weeds (including clover, oxalis, bindii etc) but won't kill your grass when used in correct dosage.

    • Try Bow and Arrow. It's selective so you can be careless with your spraying especially on a lawn.

  • This product does not specifically state that it will kill buffalo grass. Would it be safe to use with buffalo grass? Thanks!

    • +3

Do not use on Buffalo Grass. Buffalo grass is very susceptible to herbicides.

      • +3

use this on Buffalo Grass. It great. Only kills weed.
        https://www.bunnings.com.au/hortico-500ml-weed-killer-for-bu…

Also weeds grow faster and grass is much slow. Since I have been using this I have to mow quite less.

        • +1

been squatting and picking weeds out with a screwdriver every other week, i'll give this a shot, let's hope it doesn't kill sir walter

          • @plain_biscuit: Its acutally quite amazing, I have a big yard so first time I sprayed once all over then every couple of months i just spray on where the weeds apprear ( leave it in the spay can). The good thing is after the weed died the grass took over. So successive application was less and less. You get better results with a week or more of strong sun. I let the weeds grow and just apply when I have sunny forcast. Best thing I mow really less as compared to my neighbours.

@plain_biscuit: Or we will have another state funeral

        • thanks! will give that a try too :)

        • I used this on my buffalo lawn and it did absolutely nothing to the weeds.

          https://www.bunnings.com.au/yates-4l-buffalopro-hose-on-lawn…

          What am I doing wrong?

          • +1

@pepto: Hose-on are crap as you dont know what strength is coming out. use a concentrate and a sprayer. Mix as required.

            • @tukun001: Thanks for the advice!

              • -1

@pepto: I bought a hortex fertiliser and weed spray gun that attaches to your hose and you set the dial to what concentration per litre you want. You then put your chemical in the bottle unmixed. Probably best yard purchase I've made. Particularly because I've got a 1400sqm block, it's take forever to spray selective weeder on the lawn using a pump bottle mixer.

I bought it about 9 years ago from masters I think.. This is what it looks like anyway, I think you can get a hoselink alternative / purchase on ebay / Amazon. But I highly recommend it if you've got a decent lawn area to spray.

As its a non selective weed killer it will basically kill anything it comes in contact with

    • This is not something you can use on your lawn, buffalo or otherwise! It kills everything!

    • This product is safe on buffalo grass. Just follow the instructions.
      https://www.mitre10.com.au/amgrow-bin-die-selective-lawn-wee…

    • IT will kill buffallo and almost any plant if the dose is right.

  • $10 Delivery, unless you click and collect its a miss.

    • Free delivery you if spend up to $100, or as you mention Click & Collect

    • Didn't know bunnings did free delivery too.

  • Can anyone recommend for good millipedes killer?

  • Hello OP, Do you stock this at your store ?
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/hortico-500ml-weed-killer-for-bu…
This is the best I have used as it does not damage the grass, only kills weed.

      Mostly MCPA as active ingredient.
Most rural suppliers (not Bunnings or Mitre10) have this in higher volumes.
      Example:
      https://www.airr.com.au/product/crop-pasture-protection/appa…
For 20L (40x volume) and 5x the MCDA concentration, price point should be about $38 x 200 = $760…but on sale at $275. So, no deal here.
Buy 1 and split it up with friends, unless you're on a hobby farm or larger property. Dosage probably is about 120 - 150ml / 15/20-ish litre backpack.

The "domestic" quantities (low dosage) are making a killing.
Lots of variants under the Apparent brand and others on what weed varieties you want to control.

Usually add a bit of detergent as well to assist penetration on any "waxy" broadleaf weeds.

Wilting is fastest in summer, and will take longer in winter ( less sunlight, more rain). Dont use when intense heat days.

      • Thank you Geat help

        • -1

Is Geat help good or bad?

      • This is the correct equivalent:

        https://www.airr.com.au/product/crop-pasture-protection/appa…

It's still 3-4x cheaper, but what are you going to do with 20L weed killer? Even if you share among 20 people it's still a lot.

        • 1L each? Sure for surburbia. Anyone with acreage wouldnt buy 500ml, who'd be laughing at this deal.
Surprised I got 3 negs. It shows what a different target market uses.

          • +2

@randomchecker: Your getting a neg because your not negging a deal correctly. Post a good deal on 20L of Glyphosphate by all means, if its the best price around for that product upvotes will fly your way.

Anyway real farmers know the best price for Glyphosphate comes in IBC's, anyone buying those weeny 20L jugs is getting ripped off!

    • They stock this, which has the same ingredients: https://www.mitre10.com.au/searles-herbicide-buffalo-master-…

I've never in my life used herbicides in my garden but lately the clover and bindis have been getting out of control on my lawn so had a go using this which doesn't include Glyphosate. I have been very happy with the results, the clover that was in full sun had fully wilted over an hour after use. The grass around the areas sprayed has browned slightly, but definitely far more gentle than I was expecting.

    • +1

I used that recently and love it. Didn't kill my grass but killed waist high prickly weeds. I was very sceptical but wanted a greener option.

    • +3

You can also try making your own at a fraction of the price…

Salt & vinegar works well, especially if you're also going to have fish & chips for lunch later. You can use the leftover solution…

      • Or boiling water works a bit

      • Will Vinegar+salt discolour or stain clay pavers? I have the large form (30cm x30cm) on a sand base with a lot of weeds coming through.

    • +1

That is acetic acid IE vinegar

    • Thanks for this, I’d like to try this I reckon. Sounds like a great alternative.

  • How's Scotty Cam?

  • Hi Rep, Can you recommend a clover-only weed killer (if there is such a thing)?

  • How much will 5L cover?

I have a 330m2 block, it's not covered in weeds but I want to spray at least half of it?

    • I assume the 5L is diluted correctly, think it'd be close for 165m2…depends how evenly you apply. It'd kill everything growing (except seeds).
A backpack/ wand sprayer is easy to apply, or a battery powered pump, although these are pricey. Too fine a "mist" isnt as effective and can blow (=lose it) into surrounding areas with a small breeze and kill unintentionally surrounding plantlife, and also, not enough applied to kill the weed (eg bigger weeds)

      • I bought 3

My land is empty, and my neighbour is building so there is nothing on the land

I don't want any plants, small block and building as large as I can.

Off course don't want to endanger insects or bees, but builder will want land cleared either way.

Fencing all around block, so shouldn't affect neighbours

        Thank you

        • I have a 650m2 block I nuke regularly. I connect 2 garden hoses together to give me a 30m reach. Then use an empty weed n feed hose on applicator. Basically put around 100ml of 360mg/L Glyphosate in the weed n feed container. Then fill up with water. Give it a good shake. Then connect hose and spray away.
Wear goggles, cover up and super important, spray with the wind behind you.

Immediately after hose yourself off, wash all your hoses (take a tub with you for the hoses) then go jump in the shower and scrub again. It's some potentially real nasty stuff. I know a few farmers who used this stuff less than I do, and they all have pancreatic cancer in common, sadly including the kids. Could be a coincidence, but treat it like its going to kill you. I have a love / hate relationship with it. It's still the only viable option for large blocks (I was whipper snipping every week once, as the council fine you if the block grows above 10cm tall).

  • Any recommendation for a spray to control creeping beggarweed from a tropical buffalo/carpet lawn?

    https://stock.adobe.com/au/search?k=beggarweed

  • Can i apply this on a grass that are still alive with weeds? Or will it kill the grass too? Thank you!!

  • Can this kill the onion weeds?

    • Yes, as a non selective killer will wipe anything it touches

  • Is this stuff any good for oyster plants? I keep trying to poison it or dig it out, but the roots' spread is so great…

  • I need something that kills onion weed and keeps grass alive. Any suggestions?

    • Davidgrays destiny

    • Onion is a tough one, our recommendation is to use a wand or paint brush and just treat the onion weed with glypho

  • Anyone know of a selective way to kill soursobs ?
    Other than hand weeding….

My Dad has one of those butane weed burners. I have no idea how effective it is at killing weeds but he enjoys walking around the backyard pretending he’s Hank Scorpio.so there’s that

  • +2

For some reason I have not seen 360 Glyphosate concentrate in Bunnings from last many month. Used to be about 7-10$, value for money.

    • been discontinued by the manufacturer

      • Apologies, meant Hortico 360

    • neither. bought some cheap (1L) at mitre 10 for like $24 i think

    • +4

The Hortico Glysophate 360 in the orange 1L container was great. They've since discontinued it (I think they were bought out by Yates), who now try to sell a weaker mix for double the price.

      • Hortico is same as Yates product just branded up for Bunnings

    • +1

Yeah, they only do the 100g/litre stuff now for $7 odd. But noticed Glyphosate is being phased out all together. None of the Woolies weed killers have Glyphosate anymore. Now two forms of acid.

      • I also thought this seems to be the case but interestingly it continues to be available in lower or higher concentrations than 360..weird

  • Is yates the best brand for weed/tree killer products? I need to kill 2 trees in my yard, they were both cut down to the stump but somehow grew back bigger than before (one overtook and kill some of my fruit trees i had, i have no idea how it regrew). It is similar to yew? But the leaves are different and i think it starts with a 'p'.

How are the spray bottles where you need to manually pump it? I need to spray for at least 15 minutes. I've bought the brunnings 1l one multiple times and all it did was turn the leaves brown… several months later leaves were green again.

    • +1

To kill a tree after you cut it down you need to use a paintbrush and apply the weedkiller liberally to the freshly cut stump. Diesel will also achieve a similar result.

      • +2

Diesel will also achieve a similar result.

Diesel is too expensive at the moment.

    • Cut tree, drill a hole or two in the middle with a 10mm bit, pour in glyphosphate
      Tree will die.
Just watch out for termites moving in to chomp on the later rotting stump.

  • Excellent price, thanks

  • WIll anything kill Italian Arum (Arum italicum)? It's driving me insane

    • Glyphosphate kills everything!

  • Thank God I bought a 1 litre of Hortico 360 from Bunnings for $9 before they discontinued it, will last me for years.

  • Man, nice timing as I was looking at Weed killers. I had my mind set on https://www.bunnings.com.au/yates-250ml-buffalopro-selective…. Treats 415 sqm and seems to be safe on various grass types including buffalo. I have never used weed killers before, is it as easy as spray the whole lawn, wait 3 weeks, weed dies but grass is safe? Then throw in some grass seed and hire a lawn roller to squish the seed into the ground and be done with it?

  • what can you use in the backyard that kills everything including weeds, grass and all plants.

    • This is a non selective herbicide - it kills everything, its not picky!

      • cheers

    • +1

      Napalm ?

      • Napalm is good but im worried i might burn the fence and house down at the same time and maybe kill myself

        • Yeah sorry, . Maybe agent orange instead.

          • @morestuff: Sadly 2,4,5T is banned, but you can still get your hands on 2,4-D and get almost the original mix!

          • @morestuff: Agent orange sounds good, can i get some off you

    • This or anything with a decent amount of glyphosate in it.

      • what is classified as a decent amount of glyphosate if you can educate me a little thank you

    • Yates Zero will achieve this
