  • Is this good value considering it makes up 5L?

    • +3

RTU 750ml is $21, so the choice is up to you. Most would see $6 for 5L extremely good value

    • +2

I usually buy this at $10, although haven't bought in last 6 months. makes 60+ litres. kills everything
      https://www.mitre10.com.au/earthcore-glyphosate-weed-killer-…
      .

      • +1

This is also a fabulous product to remove weeds

      • +3

        kills everything

        😲

        • +10

if it was weed hurter, would we use it?
          .

      • +5

I’ve got one of these too. But it struggles, if at all, to kill periwinkle which I have lots of out the front. So not everything 🙂

Remember to mix in a spoon of soap to allow the poison to soak into waxy leaf plants.

        • Great tip about the soap

        • dish soap?

          • +1

@relicsinner: Yes. You only need a drop or two.

          • @relicsinner: "Dish soap" seems to be a term that Americans use. I haven't yet worked out whether they mean dish washing liquid like Morning Fresh (which is actually a detergent), or a soap like Velvet.

        • +3

Glyphosate should already have soap in it. The one I have foams like crazy if you spray water into it.

      • where did you get it for $10 ?

        • mitre10, but have not bought for 6 months
          .

    • +6

I use this $7.15 el cheapo that makes 50L.

      • +1

        it's only 100g/l though
        .

        • +6

So is the one the OP posted?

        • +2

Agree with you. Typical concentration is 360g/L, so called "glyphosate 360"

      • I use this too, does the job

      • Me to. Kills everything but takes about 2 weeks on buffalo particularly

    • +5

The alternatives given above are glyphosate only, the one listed in the deal is glyphosate plus nonanoic acid. Nonanoic acid apparently destroys the cuticle of the weeds, giving much faster weed destruction.

According to this page, nonanoic acid doesn't work well in cold or overcast weather, it needs sunlight to work: http://eurekaag.com.au/dortusreallywork/

    • +2

      No it's only 100g/L glysophate. Roundup is 380g/L glysophate ($180 for 20L) or 560g/L ($480 for 20L).

Imagine it like cordial. Do you want 4 X strength or .5 strength?

  • +11

Wasn't there recently a $10 billion settlement for people who got cancer from using glyphosate ???

    • +5

That was in commercial uses where they were spraying thousands of litres daily. For general home use, the Australian government as marked these products as safe to use

        • +7

          JV is right.
Forgetting any political comments, many countries have banned Glyphosate, especially in Europe. Sure, its convenient but it most probably does damage humans to some degree

        • +3

Many countries have already banned glyphosate.

I'm not claiming that it's safe, but the bans are because its affect on insects and biodiversity, not human health.

      • +1

Interesting though how far behind Australia is with herbicides/pesticides in general vs Europe/uk.

        https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2022/sep/27/austr…

Had no idea Barnaby Joyce gutted the regulator as agriculture minister either.

I'd agree that glyphosate is something that can be handled safely but you'd be doubtful that most at home would bother wearing the right clothing/protection

    • +5

      Hi JV

I'm amazed that you got neg'd for pointing out how dangerous this stuff is.

Like you pointed out further down Vinegar and salt do the same thing at a fraction of the price .

      • +4

The problem with vinegar and salt is they don't work at lower concentrations, and if you apply too much nothing will grow in that soil until the salt is washed away. Commercial herbicides break down in the soil in a matter of days (unless they are pre-emergents) and then you can grow something else.

        • +1

Didnt have any luck with vinegar so used boiling water

          • +1

@corky: How many kettles do you need to boil?

            • +4

@Fobsessive: The trick is to boil the water and not the kettle.

Don Burke taught me that one…

            • +1

@Fobsessive: Large Weeds on fence line took about 4 lots each. Would be a pain to do it on the whole yard 🙄

    • There is a current class action in Australia for this which includes household use.

  • After how long can pets roam around after applying product?

And is there a shelf life

    Thanks Rep

    • Yates recommends the following "DO NOT allow pets and children to enter treated areas until the spray has dried. "

        • +10

Water is deadly if not used correctly. Follow usage instructions

          • @McFodder: Pets and children getting wet with water is generally safe

        • +4

Define "safe". Glyphosate has recently been changed from "Does not cause cancer" to "May cause cancer". It is not in the "does cause cancer" group like sunlight, or alcohol. Do you call sunlight or alcohol safe or not safe?

Like sunlight, just be sensible, minimise unnecessary exposure, but you don't need to freak out.

        • Correct the products are safe to use. Like any product, be it weed killer to a TV, you need to use it within the intent of the product and the guidelines of the manufacturer

          • -2

            @mitre10official:

you need to use it within the intent of the product and the guidelines of the manufacturer

            Which isn't always possible.

            • +3

@jv: Great, then don't use it?

            • @jv: so dont use it if you cant follow the guidelines…

              • @StalkingIbis:

if you cant follow the guidelines…

I can follow the guidelines, but that won't protect others from this poison.

            • @jv: Then don't use it and stop winging on here with stupid comments

        • Safe for use on plants not allow pets to inhale and lick.

          • +1

            @SickMyDuck1:

not allow pets to inhale and lick.

Which may not be possible if you're spraying a garden without a fence and you have no control of other animals.

            • @jv: Then don't spray this product in that situation.

Do you also comment on posts of 65" TVs that "this TV is too big for my living room. May not work for everyone"

              • +1

                @OZKap:

Then don't spray this product in that situation.

I didn't place the weeds in my front yard, they just grew there.

    • +4

      Shelf live is 5 years

      • +2

        Just picked up my order

        BN : 21948 DOM: 04/16

        • Based on the Rep's stated shelf life of 5 years, its effectiveness is now questionable. Interested to know if you decided to return it unopened.

          • +2

@ifonlyiwasyounger: Hopefully they can exchange it for a fresh batch otherwise il try and do a Bunnings price match

            • +1

@Gotchas: I picked up 2x today and only found out it was manufactured 6 years 5 months ago (DOM 05/16) which is not okay…..

Then I found out that this should be an enf-of-life product which is not sold elsewhere. Therefore can't price match because no one else stocks them.

Have to use them as soon as the rain stops.

  • +3

Not to promote but cheaper option of same product is to buy Roundup 1L Herbicide Liquid Concentrate Weedkiller from bunnings for $36.88 which will make 100 litres ie 37 cents per litre. Works out even cheaper if willing to buy 5 litre bottle too.

    • +1

The better option would be https://www.mitre10.com.au/herbicide-zero-glyphosate-490-con… which is high concentrate and makes far more litres than the other product

      • +1

        ha ha Good one

      • -8

Get a commercial 20L quantity and price point per litre is way cheaper from a rural farm supplier.

Many more specific products for what you want to control.

        • +1

Yeah but its a good price for this specific product = bargain.

Who the frig wants or can afford 20L for their suburban garden!

          • -2

@hoxygt: When you lived on 30 acres, who wants to spend 500ml at low concentration weedkiller that wont be enough to cover it once?
Never mentioned 20L for surburban garden
            .
The point is that its a diluted version of the commercial product, but sold for heaps more.

            • +2

              @randomchecker:

When you lived on 30 acres

Not sure why people are growing 30 acres of lawn and want it weed free, unless you have your own golf course?

            • +1

@randomchecker: Its a fair point but this deal isn't for hobby farmers, nor are deals on Ozito drills for roof carpenters.

You shouldn't neg a deal unless you can point out the identical product for a lower price. For all us residential chumps on our handkerchief sized gardens this deal saves us getting screwed over by the man for yes a diluted low value item.

          • @hoxygt:

            can afford 20L

Think you can afford it but I think we're talking about a lifetime supply for modern blocks that are like 400m2 of which 70% is house / paved.

            • +1

@netjock: Well its a nice thought but the shelf life of Glyphosphate is only a few years.

              • +2

                @hoxygt:

shelf life of Glyphosphate is only a few years

That sucks. Can't inflation protect for life :D

    • The question is what are you going to do with 100 litres of weed killer?

      • +5

Become a serial (weed) killer or a good neighbour

      • -5

If you live in an apartment, sure…
If you live on a large block, 1/4 acre…then, you will slowly work your way through it, especially if the neighbours aren't weeding

    • +2

Not the same product, though. Pure glyphosate takes days to have a visible effect while this one claims that it works in 1 hour.

  • Any recommendation on a sprayer to use with this?

    • -3

I'd be more concerned about the type of face mask and gloves to wear…

      • Yes - that's right follow the safety directions!

    • +1

Any of these will be fine, https://www.mitre10.com.au/catalogsearch/result?q=hills%20sp… though we would typically recommend one with a wand like the 5L

    • +2
      • this does look awesome. thanks!

        • +1

Yeah beats the old manual pump sprayer hands down.

      • Any idea if you can get a flat spray nozzle for that?

      • I have one too but it leaks and the container cracked after just a few months of storage. Quality control issue.

        • That’s what I love about ozito 5 year replacement warranty. Just save your receipts.

  • Doesn't work on clover? Can you please recommend something which works on clover.

    • +1

      Slasher works well on clover.

    • +1

It's glypho so I will have no problem with clover, otherwise, a glypho-free alternative would be https://www.mitre10.com.au/slasher-organic-weedkiller-concen…

      • For $8 more you can get twice as much.

    • +4

It should kill clover. It'll also kill the grass the clover is in.

      • +1

and possibly any pets that lick it…

        • +1

Yes, it's a poison. Shouldn't be using it around pets etc.

          • +1

            @apsilon:

Shouldn't be using it around pets etc.

I have no control of other people's pets in my front garden.

            • +3

@jv: Other people should have control of their pets and not be letting them roam other peoples property.
