[SA] Free New SA Drivers Licence for Optus Data Breach Customers @ Service SA

2640

Similar to ciab’s post earlier, Service SA has decided to waive the $20 replacement fee

It is the Government’s view that South Australians whose data has been breached through no fault of their own should not be liable to foot the cost of replacing their driver’s licence, and given the scale of this attack the Government has decided to waive the usual $20 replacement fee

If you have been advised that your driver licence details have been compromised by the recent Optus data breach, you are eligible to request a new driver licence number.

Please attend a Service SA centre, or, use the online application forms 🆕 to apply for a change of licence number. Please bring any documentation you have received from Optus.

Once your licence number has been changed, a new driver licence card will be produced and posted to you. Your new licence will be immediately available digitally through your mySAGOV account and on the mySAGOV app.

      As they should

I’d argue there’s a potential impact to your credit score if you Don’t change your licence number.

    • +2

Be aware there is potential to impact your credit score if you change your licence number.

      Like how? Please explain?

    • +1

Is your credit score impacted when you are issued a new passport when the old one expires ?

      • -6

driver licence number doesn't change when renewed.

        • You didn't answer the question.

    • +3

Jv may be right. No one knows whats happening in bowels of Experian and such.

      • no worries, let them change their licence number and watch their credit rating dive…

        • All just data entry. Experian / Equifax need to be on board with this and update credit files with the new numbers.

I guess if you look at the inverse to this and they dont make the change, then you might as well apply for everything, pay nothing, then start a fresh with a new number.

        • +1

Credit rating agencies will adjust to this situation.
          Pretty basic

        • Pretty sure what you're saying is bs JV. As @sjj89 said, agencies will just adjust.

          • @peterross: No worries, you're free to risk it and see what happens.

            • @jv: you always have such a negative view of things. Lighten up a bit!

              • @peterross: sounds like you have a negative view of opinions that are different to yours.

                • @jv: Lol no. Your views are negative. If you can't see that, I don't know what to tell you

                  • @peterross: Your view is negative about my views.

The government should not be responsible for a non government owned company stuff up either…..

    • +14

True. But they should do what they can to enable people to protect their identity. They’re going to recoup the costs from Optus one way or another anyway. Either fine the $&@! out of them or bill them for the cost.

      • Agree otherwise it will be taxpayers end up paying for their own DL replacement costs.

    • -1

      Who oversees the regulator?

    • +2

Who is responsible to hold Company accountable and penalize the company ??

Its the government. Government needs reform in law to ensure company is severely penalized. A recent interview on ABC said if such a attack was to happen in US, companies will likely pay upto 100 million dollars in penalty, while breach of Privacy Act has penalty capped at 2 million dollars.

Government is responsible for ensuring people's identity information are safe, However what government should not responsible for, IS COST ASSOCIATIED WITH IT DUE TO RECENT OPTUS BREACH, which Optus or any other low security company should be responsible for.

    • No, but the government should have an ID system that doesn’t require you to give an single unchanging number to multiple companies as one of the sole ways of proving your identity.

      • -1

And the government should have continuous white hat penetration testing and whatever other safeguards are of their servers are required to ensure they don't become the next breach. like the OPM hack where literally all the US military personnel clearance info was breached quite a few years back.. oof

    • -1

Not any more, since February, Optus is semi Gov
      https://www.optus.com.au/about/media-centre/media-releases/2…

      Couldn't pass 8 months, fcuked up…

  • Vic to follow ?

    • Victoria had this earlier, before SA.

Vic roads website talked about this yesterday at very least.

  • Same deal for Victoria now

  • +2

    NSW too.

EDIT: Most states now, it seems - https://www.news.com.au/technology/online/hacking/states-rev…

The NSW government has issued instructions for customers to apply for a replacement drivers licence, with Customer Service Minister Victor Dominello confirming Optus will notify customers in coming days if their licence number was stolen in the hack.

To apply, residents with a digital drivers licence should head to the Service NSW app, where an interim card number, which can be used instead of a plastic licence card, will be instantaneously issued.

A new plastic licence card will then be issued and sent to the home of the resident within 10 business days.

Those applying for a new card will have to front the $29 replacement fee, but “reimbursement advice will be issued by Optus to customers in the coming days” according to Mr Dominello.

The minister apologised on Twitter for taking “several days to reach this landing”.

    • +4

“reimbursement advice will be issued by Optus to customers in the coming days”

I don't think the "reimbursement" will be guaranteed

      https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/optus-breach-faqs#who-will-pa…

You will need to pay for the replacement and will need to discuss with an Optus representative if you wish to be reimbursed.

    • +1

Does replacing your DL change the Licence number or is it just the card number?

      • +2

Just the card number. Licence number stays the same.

        • Service NSW also replace the license number during the snsw breach few years back.

        • +3

          Doesn't that meake it pointless?

        • As per the link, it will replace drivers licence number in SA. We don't have card numbers or issue numbers in SA so we have to request a new drivers licence number which is a pain.

      • -1

For SA they are allowing us to request a new number altogether as we don't have card numbers or issue numbers like other states.

        • +2

We do have card numbers in SA. I was asked for it for the first time a few weeks ago when activating a prepaid service. Until then I didn't even realise there was a little number on the back, and my card was a bit worn from going in and out of my wallet so I had to guess one of the numbers (got it on try 2 out of 3, not sure what would have happened if I failed 3 times)

          • @cbeard: My bad, didn't realise we started getting card numbers. At least that should make things easier since we can keep our licence numbers.

  • We'll need a new name too!

    • +1

I have a list of new names … commencing with …. Seymour Bartz … and transitioning to Wayne Kerr … or maybe even a Wayne King …

thank you. my work is done.

      • IP Freely

        • How can i forget old mate Hugh …. Hugh Janus.

I'm looking forward to a complete new face as well. This one looks like a dropped pie.

    Where WA

    • +1

      Can't be changed in WA…

    • WA is not part of Aussie I reckon.. coz we’re isolated state 🥹😩🥲

    • +1

      No optus reception

    • In WA, quite sure we consumers are at fault for Optus’s mistakes.

    • Also waiting on WA - need a new license number :(

      • I'd like to know why there is such a big issue that WA can't change their numbers but every other state can manage it just fine.

  • +1

My email says "No ID document numbers or details have been affected." So not everyone got the same email?

    • Same here. Ex-customer since July.

    • +2

I've only had the one email sent to me from Optus. This was what it said on mine "Importantly, no financial information or passwords have been accessed. The information which has been exposed is your name, date of birth, email, phone number, address associated with your account, and the numbers of the ID documents you provided such as drivers licence number or passport number. No copies of photo IDs have been affected."

      • +1

Thankfully your password hunter2 was not accessed.

        • Their login page gave the error ‘your email is not correct for the password ‘hunter2’ please select your email matching password ‘hunter2’ from the list below:’

          :p

  • C'mon WA!!!

  • +1

Vic gov went private. Wonder when they will pass it on

  • Thanks, bought two.

  • +5

The real bargain here is not being with Optus.

  • +1

Any official government source that can clearly articulate a way to see if my/someone's details were part of the breach?

    • +1

You can check the Optus customer API yourself to see what Optus is storing and what could have been breached.

      See here for details: https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/optus_sept_2022_breach
(scroll to middle of page, "What Optus account could have been exposed?")

  • +3

It took me 20 years to finally memorise my license number, now this 🤬

    • If it's anything like NSW the License number never changes but the Card number does.

  • +2

Annoyingly you have to spend hours in the Services SA queue!!! Why can't this be automatically applied for on line, or via their app

    • +1

possibly to prevent another data breach

      • But other states allow you to do via app or online

  • +1

replacement with same or different number?

  • What if someone knows my name, DOB, passport && Drivers Licence number. How can that impact me.

We share this information quite a lot and quite frequently. i.e. call any customer care and you are literally verbally giving out half of above info to auth yourself.
There is always extra layer of security along with this information and it will need to be very targeted to impact anyone from this level of information.

Add 2-way auth to all your accounts that really adds up security.
    A very open-ended question.

    • I would like to think we will eventually stop using identity numbers to prove our identity. But not until after we stop using passwords.

      • +1

Needs to be a unique number or token per time it’s used/given out. Easy enough to do digitally. Makes reusing the same number you gave the last company useless if done properly.

        • +1

I agree. some sort of rsa or google auth or ubikey type setup would be much better.

    • +3

People can activate a mobile in your name with your name, address, date of birth and either your Medicare number or driver's license number or passport number.

With a mobile account bill in your name they can then apply for credit online as if they were you.

Whilst you might not suffer a financial loss you might find it impossible to get credit yourself in the future.

      • -1

Mobile bill needs to be postpaid and for postpaid they want something to confirm my address
Knowing my Drivers licence number/medicare number/passport number will only give my current address which they wouldnt be able to say it out loud or put in to validate
Also, all communication will come to my address since address on these doc is my address

I dont see any easy way out unless someone updates or makes a fake id to send it to authorities with their address

        • Who gets a physical mobile phone bill any more? They come online. You won't see it. They don't need to send you anything as they can activate a SIM online with your ID.

    • +4

For motivated actor, they can create fake driver license with your info but their photo. When that is created, pretty much they can do anything.
Happened to someone I know unfortunately.

      • wow, thats some scary shit. Hope everything was fixed for them.

      • can attest to this catching out an acquaintance who purchased a car from a private sale. Fraudulent DL was provided as proof of id and car purchased unfortunately had money owing on it. Fraudulent letter was also provided claiming all debts had been paid off.
Point made above is relevant, if someone is motivated enough to make a fake DL, they may be motivated to steal your mail as well. one needs to be cautious, especially after the release of info at this scale

  • +2

I'll be demanding optus pay to change my gender to prevent my identity being stolen.

  • LEGAL Class Action / Class action is a type of legal proceeding in which one person (the plaintiff or applicant) brings a claim on behalf of a wider group of people

Time and car expense to get to Transport office / wasted time in line/ return trip / license fee = approx $200 per customer credited on Optus bill

Easy for them and for victim Lemon to Lemonade

This way they will pay professionals to keep data secure and not skimp on security

  • -3

The way the average Adelaide person drives, I already thought they gave out their licenses for free, in breakfast cereal boxes.

  • No where on the link does it say the fee is being waived? The email I got from Services SA stated I would need to pay the $20 replacement fee?

Can anyone provide the source saying the fee is waived as otherwise I expect I’ll be asked to pay it when heading into Services SA.
