Ozito Cordless Blower and Grass Trimmer Kit $119 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ Bunnings Warehouse

340

Just last year this kit was sold out all across NSW I scoured the internet to try to get the set but no luck. Didn't think this package would ever return given how cheap it is and how great the reviews are, seemed to good to be true. Granted it's now $119 and a year ago it was $99 it's still an unbeatable deal. For that price you get;

1 x 18V Split Tube Blower
1 x 18V Grass Trimmer
10 x Grass Trimmer Blades
1 x 18V 2.5Ah Battery
1 x 18V Compact Fast Charger

For the battery and charger alone you're looking to pay around $79.
I have a small lawn and this kit is perfect, the front and back yard are going to look immaculate this summer!

The whipper snipper is not great , I never bother with it . The blower looks different to mine , it has a one piece snout , Thats actually really useful and works well ,

  • looking for a good cheap whipper snipper but unsure if this will do

I have a really small front yard and it works wonders for my needs (take about 8 minutes to finish). The plastic blade doesn't break as easily as i had read here, and worst case scenario, you can use the hack to use a line trimmer

      • Agreed, I've a small lawn and even smaller nature strip. This trimmer does the job, around the tree water-well on the nature strip and cleaning up around the pop-up sprinklers in the lawn. I don't use it for edging.

This particular grass trimmer within 2 mins of use will make you sell your house and move into an apartment. It will make you have a phobia of edge grass. It will give you nightmares of overgrown lawns and having to use this trimmer to cut it. It will make you hate your wife and children. It will most likely be the cause of your early mental problems. The battery, charger and blower, those are fine, I use them a lot.

    • +2

It's not a dedicated edger though, works perfectly fine otherwise.

      Appreciate the comedy though

    • I'd just like to respond to say I appreciated this comment!

is this the hack we are all thinking of? looks fun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDniyP2zIXE

Interesting šŸ§, I havenā€™t tried on my Ozito but tempted

  • What do people use to get nice straight edges on lawns?

    • +21

      Photoshop

      • Yes definitely if I was selling hah

    • Something with more power and practice. A dedicated edger helps

    • A stick edger is probably your cheapest option for decent edges. No idea on the quality of the Ozito but the Ryobi are pretty good.
You can use a whipper turned on the side but it does take a lot more practice

      • I have this model, works well on dry grass and soil, otherwise it's a mudfest.

Additionally best to use as 4ah battery as the tool is too weak with anything lower than 3ah.

    • It depends on whether you have a decent edge to begin with.

If you do, then to maintain, a standard grass trimmer is fine i.e. the ones that have the heads that rotate to also work with edges. I have a few different ones and all take a little practice to use with each being slightly different. All work very well and the trick is to maintain a decent edge and do it every time you cut the grass.

If you don't have decent edges, then you need to grab a sheers or the likes and create one to begin with. Moving forward, just use the edger to maintain. Nice and easy.

These trimmers I would not recommend unless planning on changing/hacking it to use line. Edges will break those blades easily if one hits stones or path.

I use one of these. https://www.bunnings.com.au/trojan-fibreglass-handle-star-whā€¦

As others have said, a dedicated lawn edger is your best bet unless you enjoy the 90 degree line trimmer contortion act. I never mastered it, so have one of each of these below. If I had to choose one, the Ego was a better (and cheaper) unit, but is quite heavy. You may need to grab one of their $20 harnesses if you're less than 80kg, have a partner who may use it or have mobility concerns.

Ego 56v Multi-head Edger - goes on sale every couple of months for sub $200 and is compatiple with a range of other Powerhead options for saws and trimmers but you will need to enter their battery eco-system and they aint cheap. Worth every penny if you loathe yard work as much as me and want fast, quality outcomes.

or Ryobi 36v Edger - great unit, not quite the same build quality as the all-metal Ego unit, but considerably lighter and really well reviewed. Again, choice may come down to battery eco-system that appeals most.

    • I just use the recip saw with an old blade. So much easier than the line trimmer.

I got the trimmer as part of the lawnmower kit and sold it off ASAP, I really didn't have a use case for it as the first time I tried to trim a line, the blade broke off. I really don't understand the use case for the trimmer if you have a lawn mower. A proper line trimmer would be a lot better.

  • I have that trimmer and it frustrates me to no end. The blades keep flying off.

    • +7

Everytime these get posted there's a lot of comments reflecting on their hate for the trimmer, makes me wonder if I've got a "faulty" unit or people are incorrectly using it? I much prefer this type of trimmer to a line trimmer as for me blades last much longer and are so much easier to swap. I've only have the blade fly away a few times and all were my own fault (hitting a rock, or hitting the fence…).

My typical use case is finishing of a mowing session by going over bits missed by mower and finishing around the fence and garden, specifically the areas the lower cannot reach.

I have also recommended the tool to friends and neighbours and they've all been happy with it…

      • I bought the 36v pxc line trimmer and that thing is so bloody heavy. I find it difficult to keep it level for a small patch, maybe 50sqm. Thinking of buying the grass trimmer because it's lighter then if it doesn't work out, hacking it.

      • +1

How do you cut the grass on an edge without touching the edge? Of course you have to hit the fence, concrete and rock with the blade to hit the edge grass. Every time you do hit something…the blades goes on a projectile flight. Thus the uselessness. Unless you mean you use your grass trimmer to 'mow' your grass and not do the edges.

        • +2

I run it up against the fence line, bushes and tree trucks and have never had a blade fly off on me, are you sure you are "locking" it into place correctly?

        • "Unless you mean you use your grass trimmer to 'mow' your grass and not do the edges.ā€

Okay I think here's your problem, this is called a grass trimmer, not an edger. I've seen people use line trimmer to do the edging and it creates a massive dust storm and throws projectile around (hate to be the owner of a car parked nearby when someone is doing that). Not having a go at you, just pointing out that this is not the correct tool for that job. Edger start from very cheap (sub $50) manual ones, to more expensive electric or petrol ones.

"How do you cut the grass on an edge without touching the edge?"

There's a metal guard which is slightly longer than the blade, I put that down and run that against the fence or garden; it cuts all the grass and doesn't hit anything.

I use an electric edger to put a line on the side of the grass and paver or garden.

      • +2

I think people are using it incorrectly, I have never had an issue with it. I find you have to angle it a bit different from a traditional trimmer, but once you get used to that its more than adequate for me, and my garden is pretty huge.

        • Have been using ours weekly for over a year, never had a blade come off so sounds like user error. We even dig it into the concrete edges to rip the grass right out and never had an issue

We mow our (inner city) back yard entirely with the line trimmer, not actually easy to get it completely even and it leaves the grass tops a bit rough but it works fine for the purpose. Battery runs maybe 20-30mins which does the yard and a few minutes of the blower to tidy up

      • +1

I also vastly prefer mine to a line trimmer, no annoying line feeding issues.

      • +1

I think I might need lessons then. Lol

I ainā€™t no expert in line trimmers. In fact this is the only one Iā€™ve ever used. But looking at the comments below, Line trimmers May be just as frustrating.

I may have new found respect for this thing.

    • Have you tried the hack to put a line trimmer on it?

  • Are there any generic metal blades bunnings or any other company sell? I need it for my heavy duty line trimmer?
Also what is this hack people are talking about?

    • I suspect they are talking about replacing the plastic blades with an actual trimmer line (wire)

  • +1

Line trimmer is gold- yes blades come off sometimes…great time for a break- is much better than line. So light & easy to use.

  • +3

Ill be honest, the trimmer is fantastic. I use the original blades as I got a huge pack with the one I bought, I think as long as you dont treat it like a traditional trimmer and angle it the way it likes it makes a super clean, straight cut. I really cant fault mine, if anything it would be nice if the blades lasted longer, but equally they are so easy to replace its not much of a bother anyway. The blower is plenty powerful too, not much to say about it, it blows well lol.

  • +1

I found the trimmer to be so good that I don't use my line trimmers any more. No more frustrating line feeding issues for me.

  • Line trimmer is no good.

    • -1

It's not a line trimmer though, it doesn't have line.

Bargain - I grabbed this combo for $99 last year after my ryobi petrol trimmer died. Was cheap, so figured I'd test a cheap electric model before spending serious money. No issues at all - I have a large lawn (700sqm) so it takes 2 batteries to complete and I'll generally go through 2-3 blades. The line trimmer is great, enough power, lightweight and no more line feeding. The blower isn't overly powerful but is fine for smaller jobs.

If you're in the Ozito ecosystem and are just after a blower, wait for the next sale of their 2 x 18v unit - it's a gamechanger.

      • never to be repeated… I am still mad I didn't buy. My dad got one and it's so strong!
the skin now goes for around $150 in Bunnings

    • I just bought this today and only need the trimmer. happy to split

      • Send me a DM and we can chat.

  • I have a small, flat yard and find this trimmer to be excellent for my purposes. We have grass right up to the colourbond fence and I haven't broken any blades to far by carefully going right up to the metal using the guide bar.

That having been said, the blower is mostly garbage so I'm not sure that I would buy this kit.

  • I need to get a bundle with the edger

  • Been this price for a week or so, reviews of the grass trimmer turned me away.

  • Any reviews on their cheqp battery mower?

  • +1

I don't mind the Grass Trimmer. Worked fine for just trimming down some high grass. It's not great but it's also super cheap and did what i wanted. also fairly light. Edit, same applies for the blower. Not overly strong but light and cheap

$10 hack that turns the line trimmer from a lightweight substitute into a bona fide string trimmer - www.randseq.org/2021/06/update-line-adapter-for-ozito-blade.ā€¦

Granted, it's still less powerful and has a smaller cutting circle than more expensive alternates, but that's part of the reason it gets more usage than my 15" 56v Ego string trimmer which cost 15x as much www.ozbargain.com.au/node/575305. For a quick whip around, or if you're looking for something the wife, lawn wench or elderly can use, it's a great little unit which is so light you can use it one handed.

Once the string trimmer conversion is complete, I find it performs best with the smaller 1p batteries such as the 2.5ah or lower because they have less power and less centrifugal force that can causes the plastic tabs or line to fly off. That said, know your use case for it. I'm sure part of the reason it works so well for me is because I have a dedicated Ego edger, so don't use it for slashing against concrete driveways or pavers searching for a laserline edge. It's strictly for grass trimming - not brush cutting or serious edging…

Likewise, the blower is decent, but unlike the trimmer, is no replacement for a real unit such as an Ego or the Ozito 2 x 18v www.ozbargain.com.au/node/564606. Again, its very light and handy for anyone with lifting issues or who only has a broom. If you've got nothing, it's a fair upgrade, but a more powerful unit is just so much more useful for anything other than shifting grass cuttings a few feet off your driveway.

  • I need this to trim my pubic hair!

Anyone found good quality substitute blades? I've tried a couple from different ebay sellers and they were gabage compared to the original ones.

  • Can this blade trimmer be modded to use line trimmer? I found the blade is a bit flimsy and snapped easily.

    • +1

See @UncleRico post. Looks like a simple but effective hack.
      http://www.randseq.org/2021/06/update-line-adapter-for-ozitoā€¦

      • yeap looks simple, might need to replace that line bit quite often.

would be nice to have bump spool hack.

        • +1

Yeah, it's pretty basic - you'll find yourself making them on auto-pilot once you've whipped up a few. Grab yourself some pliers, thin wire and a few meters of line and go to town next time Dancing with the Reality Stars, the Blockheads or Big Brother / Mother / Cousband is on tv.

I've got dozens of pre-made adapted lines ready for install, though I rarely need to replace them now. I used to go through a couple of plastic tabs whenever I was getting close to the fencelines, but I'll usually get 3 or 4 yards out of each MacGyver'ed string insert…

And if you're not already, avoid the temptation to use a 4 or 5kw battery and try the included 2.5kw battery. Whether by design or psycho-somatic interpretation, I always find less issues with blades flying off on the batteries which provide less torque.
