They don't have the model I want, but hey, nice deals for anyone who's in the market for some of these models

How many people swap out their TVs every year?

I doubt most people would notice any difference between a C825 and a C835.

Why is everyone always so obsessed with the "next gen" when often it really just means "pay double for a few improvements, most of which you will probably never understand, need or use".

      • +56

Because we're a sick, materialistic, gluttonous, sarcastic, cynical, narcissistic, airheaded, trendy nation! ^_^

Me, myself and i, self love, forever!

      • +14

Sometimes they're not even improvements. They strip some TVs of features, like brightness, local dimming zones, etc. then sell it for more than it was last year. People should only upgrade a TV around once every few years or so with new tech and only for a bigger size. Otherwise you're not really gaining anything noticeable

        • +29

          Every 10+ years imo.

          • +13

            @Dsiee: I agree.
            Swap tv's around every 10 yrs;
            phone every 4 years;
            laptops every 5 years.

            • +6

@shegeloaf: I’s even go 7 for laptops. Unless you’re doing heavy grade stuff on it. But of it is just for web browsing/emails. 7 easy.

              • +1

@ONEMariachi: Longer for macs than pcs though (price difference makes up for this of course)

                • +2

@Meconium: Depends on what you've bought though, and your use case. Macs tend to be a bit higher spec than lower priced laptops, but if you get a similarly built windows laptop, it will easily last just as long. Especially if it is ram/hard drive upgradeable.
I just upgraded the hard drive to an SSD and upgraded the ram in my old mans Dell laptop that he bought in 2016. Cost $90, and he'll easily get another 3-4 years out of it now. All he does is facebook and AFL fantasy on his, and a few youtube videos. Perfectly fine for him.

I've got the 16gb/i7 surface laptop 1 from 2017 and definitely won't be upgrading it for at least another couple years. Does everything I need for laptop(still can edit photos when I'm away just fine, play smaller games, and do the standard spreadsheets/web browsing I occasionally need.). Partner is the same with her surface pro 3 she bought in 2014, still going strong for what she uses it for(occasional banking and spreadsheets/online research/ordering.).

                • +1

@Meconium: iPad and MacBook easy 7+ years.

            • +1

@shegeloaf: The Ideal should be TV every 15 years if they can even last that long these days. They used to… Phones every 6-8 years. However long software support goes for. Laptops, I had one for a decade before it wasn't usable anymore. So idk

I wish manufacturers had to advertise the maximum hardware lifespan. We'd finally get better made products after hitting rock bottom these last two decades.

              • @Valowick: Old models definately can. My Sony LCD from 2009 still working fine

      • +2

@Grish im just mentioning the year so people know what they are buying, not sure how you came up with a whole speech just by that

      • I find it funny there's always some particular feature YOU MUST HAVE that isn't on the previous year's model but is on the newest one. Last time I bought a TV it was local dimming that the old models didn't have. It's like every year there is a giant upgrade? Surely not…

      • +1

Usually you are correct but there is a transition to HDMI 2.1 going on at the eminent though. Some 2021 TVs will have it, some will not.

        • Last time I upgraded the TV it was to get 4K and HDR.. also went to a larger screen. Since then, about 5 years ago there has been no significant changes that would make me upgrade. If the TV manufactures stops providing android updates I will just use a something like a nvidia shield to drive the tv until there a TV upgrades that would make it worthwhile upgrading.

      • +1

probably why c825 is listed as selling online. while 835 is not. people who like their tv's actually know what they looking for. its the curse of once you see it you can't unsee it. Most people would'nt know the difference though correct.

    • +1

The Sony X95j 2021 and the x95k 2022 are the same processors, apparently just a fraction brighter.

      • +5

Some even argue that the x95j is better

        • Really? I got the X95j from th last sale at JB. Besides price didn't see a difference

      • +3

Isn’t the X95J a FALD and X95K a miniLED? Surely these two models have seen the biggest change in technology between all year models you could have chosen to compare?

        • Agree w/ bargainben. Very notable change. Would guess brocky2066 meant x90j—>k?

  • +1

They have the $10 on $100 gift card

  • +6

Damn that's tempting for the c825 75 inch. Could be best price ever

    • -1

Yeah if only I had somewhere to put another one!

    • I got last floor stock from JB for $1710 this week.

  • +2

    C825 is a beauty

No Sonys in the link. Were there any in-store?

    • Where's the Sony's at?

      • In the title "MYER: 50% off ALL Sony, LG, Hisense & TCL TV's."

They've previously sold them (https://www.myer.com.au/p/sony-65-165cm-bravia-xr-master-ser…) but none listed on the site currently so maybe just sold out recently.

      • +1

The promo at the Myer Melbourne store included 50% off Sony TV's, but even with 50% off the Sony TV's they were still too expensive for me.

  • +2

Any of them really good TVs? I'm clueless, but 50% off is pretty good!

    • -7

The TCL C825 series is very good specs/performance for it's price. It can compete with the likes of the much more expensive LG OLED C1..

      • +17

The C825 will be brighter and may have better speakers, but no way it could compete with a C1 or any high end OLED.

It is a good TV for the price.

        • -7

You mean TCL is better value? Then 2 is better than 1 - with the rest of money, you can get more important experience & REMEMBER the Dialectical Principle:
          Quantity leads to quality.
The more (cheaper) sold the better value & quality.
Except for fashion/addiction/prestige like Coke, smoking, iPhone ;)

        • -6

It can compete. Maybe not necessarily with the OLED inky blacks, but the C825 beats it in more than just one way.

I'm sure there's a large market for ie. gamers that would rather go with value than dish out for a brand stamp. That's competing.

Specs wise the C825 matches or betters the C1 in all areas, other than blacks that some people might not even distinguish. That's competing.

It also runs GoogleOS, which I suspect is far more flexible for customising apps etc. That's competing.

          Etc.

        • -2

          @Aureus

"The C825 will be brighter and may have better speakers, but no way it could compete with a C1 or any high end OLED."

Lol, you literally just listed two perfect examples of how the C825 can compete!!

      • +4

Not a chance. And do not buy any TCL if you intend to watch sport on it.

        • -5

With the saved money U better DO sport than watch someone making money & enjoy themselves while you lose valuable time ;)

        • +3

Watch anything, really. My TCL 4K tellys are absolute shite.

          • -3

            @Boodek: Which models are they?

This is the biggest problem with people generalising a brand, when they have only experienced the lowest possible grade.

I would love to see some of these people comment on a side by side TCL next to range (and maybe price) equivalent Sony/LG/Sammy without knowing the brand.

I bet the results would be similar to those blindfolded $10 vs $100 wine tests where the "experts" often chose the $10!

          • -1

@Boodek: They are made in China. I wouldn't expect well made TVs from there.

Samsung and LG don't make their TVs there, so they're a bit more expensive, but they're worth a bit more, for the improvement in quality.

            • @BooYa: Samsung and LG make some of their panels in china. probably comes down to their processing and algos. I think some LG offer 3 years warranty as standard too. which was 1 year warranty for C1 last year. G1's in USA gave 5 years warranty. Though interesting to see how the newer models with multiple dimming zones compete. and Samsung having OLEDs now vs just pushing their good QLEDs.

C2 is quite expensive already. the Sony high end would be out of most people's budget.

seems some sweet spot coming out for 75inch too. As most people's living room would use the more useable 75-86inch range for seating distance to tv.

        • And do not buy any TCL if you intend to watch sport on it.

Maybe if your team won it would look better?

          • @1st-Amendment: Yes, if my team (?) won the motion handling would suddenly improve.

            Well done champ.

            • @eccaz:

Yes, if my team (?) won the motion handling would suddenly improve. Well done champ.

It was a joke, but you do you…

    • -8

TCL have very good value products (whatever you buy it will be soon outdated - save you money/time). Life is about interaction/socialising not watching someone have fun. With the saved money invest in your future.

  • +7

You can definitely lay them down they're all plastic Flexi panels with the exception of any OLED

    • +5

When discussing delivery the store staff told me the TV should be transported upright.
The TCL carton shows a cross X on the icon of the TV laying flat indicating the TV should not be laid flat, but maybe that is because couriers would then stack other packages ontop of the TV carton if it is laid flat ?
In my car i wouldn't have stacked anything else ontop of the carton so i may have been ok to transport flat ? It would have been easier that's for sure

      • +3

        Correct

      • +9

I laid my TCL down flat and drove almost 200km without any issues.

        • +24

              • @Elyxar: That would depend on how much they paid for the car itself would it not?
TCO and utility can be pretty important for expensive kit.

          • +2

@FlatulentFrank: At current fuel price, probably cost over $75 for that 200km return journey XD

            • @edfoo: If you don't pay more in fuel than you do for the product are you even trying lol.

          • +1

@FlatulentFrank: got the idea from homer simpson driving to the outlet store to buy a genuine sorny or panaphonics

        • I don't think any problem with LED, no good for Plasma or OLED

        • That you know of, at this point, for sure.

      • +7

I had a hisense replaced under warranty around this time last year and the tech that replaced it brought it flat in the back of his station wagon.

I asked whether there were any issues with transporting a tv laying down as I had been told initially by the store I couldn’t. He had a chuckle and said that’s what they do to make you pay a courier charge.

By the way the replacement tv is still going strong with no issues.

        • Basically yeah. Even with OLEDs, Plasmas they say to keep it upright for the gases or organic diodes to not cause any issues. You'd need to shake it like a cocktail and have it lying down for ages to any damage in that way.

          • +1

@Whisper Quiet: Plasmas they kept flat because of the thin glass across the front of the display. Being bounced/jostled etc while laying flat could lead to a torsional rotation which would shatter the glass. It's not supported in the middle.

            • @timps: If you saw the way my old Panny plasma was packed, Rambo couldnt shoot a hole through it! The current OLEDs especially the LG G series and now the Samsung QDOLEDs are poorly packaged and is why they have bends on them or need hours to break in and restabilize.

    • +9

Myer Melbourne City? Are you mad?

      • +1

We would need to be in a pretty deep recession for that to happen…

      • Is that an old store or something?

        • +4

It’s their flagship store. Hence the are you mad comment.

  • Not been in the market a TV lately so not up on the specs vs brands. We have a projector in our Theatre with a 65" TCL on the wall behind the motorised screen. It was a freebie we very rarely use it. Our older 75" Sony (daily used) in the Living area is starting to flake out with random reboots etc. This deal makes me think I might swap that into the Theatre where it will rarely be used, and put a new one in the Living for daily use.

Toss up is whether to stick to 75" in the Living, or go up again and get an 85". Any thoughts out there on the 75" TCL C825 Mini-LED vs the 85" Hisense U85 ULED (so not Mini-LED but at least it's FLAD)?

    • Had read previously about Hisense using different specs with the same model number around the globe, but thought it was a lower model to this one. Turns out it is this one. Not so fussed about the "not true HDMI 2.1" issue as it's just used for everyday TV watching in the Living area, but the panels themselves seem to have very average reviews for the Aussie model too.

Hmm, so now it's a dilemma of TCL 85" P725 average tier vs 75" C825 higher end … Gah!

  • +1

The c825 gets a good review here.I don’t need a tv but I’m very tempted.
