Good timing of this sale, with Return to Monkey Island coming out on September 19th (USA timezone).
I'd recommend folks to taking a look over at each of these games' respective pages on PCGamingWiki - really good info that have been compiled to help gamers install/configure/optimize/run these games on modern systems, thanks to various fan-made patches/installers/tweaks and optional use of software such as ScummVM:

The GOG/Steam digital releases of the four Monkey Island games should work fine for most people on modern PCs.
That said, there will always be a likelihood of a few folks who might unfortunately encounter technical issues for various reasons, even with the GOG/Steam versions of the games. Otherwise, sites such as PCGamingWiki wouldn't exist.

The high-resolution data ("modern" mode) in the Special Edition is not supported by ScummVM. It is possible to extract the files of the V5 VGA DOS CD version ("classic" mode) and make them playable via ScummVM. The process is described in this thread. The rest are not overly important if you're preparing to Return to Monkey Island, as it takes place after Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck’s Revenge.

nah you even need a monocle from the cartographer on scabb island to decifer the code wheel to find out the password so you can even enter the game
