Coming out on September 19th 2022 'International Talk Like A Pirate Day', pre-orders are now available for Return to Monkey Island, Ron Gilbert's long-awaited follow-up to the classic adventure games The Secret of Monkey Island (1990) and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge (1991) - while the new game takes place immediately after the end of LeChuck's Revenge, the other Monkey Island games ('Curse', 'Escape', 'Tales') remain canonical (sources: Adventure Gamers, IGN).

Ahoy there, Fancy Pants! Return to Monkey Island, the next installment of Guybrush Threepwood’s epic saga of secrecy, romance, and lactose intolerance, will raise the Jolly Roger high and set sail for fun on September 19.

Revealed during today’s Gamescom Opening Night Live event, wannabe pirates can pre-order Return to Monkey Island now and begin their adventure with a highly exclusive and entirely useless Horse Armor in their inventory.

      Majority of the joy is discovering the jokes when playing it for yourself.

      There's a special edition of 1 and 2 if you can't stomach the original graphics.

      There are plenty of playthrough videos on YouTube. Just watch it at 2x speed to save time. That said, it's not as fun as discovering the great one-liners through your own playthrough. And skip the fourth instalment and the episodic versions… those were awful.

        Personally I thought the episodic games oscillated between good and awful, but there was also a lot of mediocre-at-best filler.

    Pre-ordered. MI1 was one of the first games I played on floppy disk, been a big fan of the series since (well maybe not MI4…). Happy to pay full price if this means more in the series from Ron.

      Agreed. Being that there's so few people who know how to write graphic adventure games thesedays (and having grown up playing almost every Sierra / LucasArts title as they were released), I'm happy to support Ron!

      Nice find - I did a quick look over on GOG store, and even though they currently have their own 'big' sale promo with 3500+ deals … none of the Monkey Island games over on GOG are discounted at this present time.

        Not Tim Schafer though, presumably because Microsoft owns him now. The way nobody ever mentions him in interviews makes me wonder if they’ve been told to avoid the subject.

    While Stan is right that the #ReturnToMonkeyIsland pre-order horse armor serves no practical purpose in the game, Guybrush can still show it around with pride. You don't want to be the only person on your block without horse armor.

      I've not seen any mention online regarding a physical release, so it appears to be digital distribution only (Steam and Nintendo eShop). If there is a physical release announcement in the future, I'll edit the deal post accordingly.
