I haven't had a chance to see the quest 3s in action, but the 3 has a beautiful display (coming from a original vive owner).

Beware you may have heard good things about the 3 and not the 3s. Reviews seem to suggest the display isn't anywhere near as nice.

    • +12

visually its a bit better than the quest 2. It uses the same lenses, so the only graphical improvements are because of the more powerful hardware.

      • +1

Yeah you're looking at a better hardware and software experience except the lens and IPD experience.

If you have a Quest 2 already, definitely wait for a Quest 4 (or 4s, assuming it uses the Quest 3 lens and IPD system, or better).

    • Wait, so the 3 has a better display than the 3S? … Does the 3S have the same display and/or lenses as the Quest 2?

      • +2

Yes, 3S is basically the same as the Quest 2 lenses and display. The main improvement is in the CPU which is the same as Quest 3, so people claim things look better because of the better CPU.

I've tried a 3S and didn't see much if any improvement to a Quest 2, still looked like a blurry mess to me. Whilst the Quest 3 is a huge improvement in clarity. Many reviewers have said Quest 3 probably has some of the sharpest visual clarity you can get right now.

  • +11

My Quest 2 gets pulled out of the cupboard about once per year nowadays. Was fun for a month or two, then realised I'd much prefer sitting down on a couch for some console gaming. YMMV, but definitely see if you can try before you buy as it's still pretty overhyped tech imo.

    • Same here , barely using my q3 now. I like gaming, but I can’t appreciate fp games in vr , they look all shaky , and the in game experience is not the best … I used it for two months. Beat saber is great thought

    • My kids have the 3, I'd say they use them every second day at least. Personally I cant say i would use one that often, the slection of mature games is less than kids games but HL Alyx, Asgards wrath and Batman are all worthy of a play through.

      • Agreed, i bought the 3 in october, waited for batman to release and sold it on fb for 650, i was very happy with it for what the games i specifically wanted to enjoy nothing else caught my eye.

      • +2

Metro, Arizona Sunshine Remake, Resident Evil 4, Medal of Honor are all worthy games for a play through that are more adult minded.

        • what's good for casual once/mth play? I did the Arizona SunshineII main story, that was good. But wouldn't play 2nd time.

          • +1

@furyou: definitely beatsaber, if you havent tried superhot it is really fun as well

            • @cephh: yeah got those ones. Any others?

              • @furyou: minecraft in vr, skyrim in vr, subnautica in vr those were really fun as well

    • I've had a Quest 2 and then a Quest 3 for a few years now, it's been getting a serious workout with Visual Pinball X, a free pinball simulator on my PC. I use Virtual Desktop to connect to the Quest wirelessly.

Here's some recent experimentation I've been doing with VPX with regards to environmental audio. https://youtu.be/5TDmrP83t3g

    • I love my quest 1 when I first got it. Too bad I couldn't last more than 45mins before having a headache for the whole day.

Pretty much stopped using it when meta forced to use a fb account to use it, wiped all my bootlegged games too.

      • Yep same with q2, massive headache for most games but i was fine with beat saber…

      • Irrespective of the legality of bootleg games - How can anyone wiped aything on your device??
I think Amazon tried that once with Kinlde and got burned quite badly.
I am surprised Meta can delete anything on YOUR Quest device. That is hacking?

        • Wasn't a forced wipe, more account migration issue. Can't remember what happened but when I logged in my fb account it dropped all the games.

    • my quest 2 is collecting dust, too heavy, i got sick and wants to vomit after 1 min of play

      • They don't really mention on their ads that this is pretty normal to be nauseous quickly. It took me about 6 months but can use it for as long as I want these days. You kind of need to build up the time used over time and stop as you get nauseous. Also make sure you play games with high FPS. Since they've enabled 120hz it should be a lot less nausea inducing. That is.. if you're prepared to go through a bit of pain for it. Now that I've got used to it I love it, only issue is in summer it gets so hot with no AC and using VR.

  • +2

The biggest difference between the 2 and 3 are the pancake lenses. The 3S removes them.

    • +5

The 3s and 2 have fresnel lenses, not as good as pancake lenses in the 3.

  • +1

    More ways to watch corn

    • +8

I like downloading Linux iso's in VR.

    • More ways to watch corn

More ways The only way to watch corn

    • Is it any good? lol

      • +4

It's unique. But the novelty will wear off fast if you overdo it. Also, you need to be okay with either paying for a sub, or sailing the high seas, because the free content is too blurry and compressed. The pay-walled stuff is far higher resolution and quality.

    • +1

When you go vr corn, nothing else hita the same.

      • What about the real thing?

        • Nothing else hita the same

  • +20

VR headsets are the new racing wheel.

    • +12

This is the perfect reference says an owner of a dusty steering wheel. Lol

    • +4

Vr got more general appeal though

    • +12

      Nope. Disagree.
Had my Quest 3 since release and use it 2-3 times a week. It's fantastic.
Got a couple of mates on it too and we have regular Walkabout Mini Golf sessions, watch shows in Bigscreen.
Workouts are awesome with Les Mills. PC-VR up's it another level.

If anything, skip the 3S and grab a used 3 on FB marketplace.

      • +3

Got a couple of mates on it too and we have regular Walkabout Mini Golf sessions, watch shows in Bigscreen.

I always thought this would be awesome

But 1 I don’t have many irl friends
And 2 life too hectic anyway

I prefer the driving range in golf+ though

      • watch shows in Bigscreen

What's old is new again haha. We were doing this on GMod Tower nearly 16 years ago.

        • +2

          HOW CAN SHE SLAPPPPP????!

(I also miss the golden era of gmod- so many hours lost to TTT)

    • +2

Agreed, my quest 2 sir next to my Logitech wheel for when i play racing Sims twice a year

      • You need to do it more often than that! Why not join a league?

    • +2

The difference between a Quest and a racing wheel is the time involved to set everything up each time you want to play. With Quest it is just a few seconds, vs a wheel which might be several minutes, particularly if you don't have a racing sim rig.

    • Microsoft hololen has been around for over 10 years. The cost to create the content is high and time consuming, same as what apple wanted and failed to charge. See if AI can help the progress.

    • Oh how right you are, I just dusted off my old Logitech racing wheel and trying to decide whether to go with a Playstation VR2 or something for PC so the wheel won't be so lonely in the cupboard in a few weeks

      • Highly recommend VR from the quest. It's super immersive. You do need a pretty powerful GPU though.

        • I’m running a 4080 Super so that shouldn’t be too much of a worry, was almost set on the PSVR2 mostly for GT7 but now not sure 😂

          What Quest would you recommend

          • @MBix: Apparently gt7 is pretty awesome but there are many more options on PC. Assetto Corsa, ACC, le mans ultimate, iRacing (so I've heard -if you have deep pockets), AC Evo (in the future) are pretty awesome. I have quest 2 and it's incredible. Can't imagine something better.

    • depends on how many ways to use it you figure out, thrill of the fight is great for getting in some cardio Via boxing, best way to watch porn (do have to setup some sort of local server to stream downloaded content from PC cause you need the good 8k stuff or pay a sub), steamlink to play regular games with a bluetooth controller or wired with a USB A - USB C adapter in bed with a big virtual screen and 3D movies work.

  • +1

They should have named it as 3e instead.

  • +4

"The Meta Quest 3S uses the same chipset and has the same RAM as the Meta Quest 3, meaning it can play all the same VR games and apps as its sibling like the upcoming Batman: Arkham Shadow (it even comes with a free copy of the game). But its most noticeable downgrade is its displays. Instead of the crisp 2064 x 2208 pixels per eye dual-display setup of the Quest 3 you have to make do with the Quest 2’s 1832 x 1920 per eye single display setup, which the Quest 3S is repurposing."

  • +9

IMO splurge on the 3 instead, u deserve it.

    • +1

Oh didn't see these. 100% agree with you @Jimothy Wongingtons and wrote the same thing below.

  • +8

Just an opinion from someone that's had a MQ3 since launch day. Such an awesome device. Don't go cheap. Buy the 3 not the 3S. Buy 512GB not 128GB. That would be my advice for anyone. I personally believe a yearly pass of Meta Quest+ is worth it for the range it gives you access to. Offset if you must by inventive ways of sourcing games.

    • +1

I bought a Q3S 128GB before Xmas and it's great fun, but I'm constantly deleting apps to free up storage space. Would definitely go for a 512GB Q3 if I was starting over.

      • +2

I'm in the same position almost at 512GB, but that's with me not looking after it and filling it for no good reason. If a game is crazy cheap, like a few bucks with great reviews I'll just buy it and install it. Then the odd time I get that full storage message I'll sort by size and delete a single big boy. I blame ozbargain, some of those sale periods have been amazing. Things like Max Mustard for a gold coin have been amazing. Yeah I'd really really struggle with 128GB. To be fair did take me forever to get to 512GB.

  • +2

Ever so slightly cheaper at JB Hifi

    128GB - $449
    256GB - $619

    • +4

Got an email from JB hi-fi, shows price of Meta Quest 3 512gb as $699. But when I click on it the price shows $799 on the website. Pricing advertised error?

      • Could be, maybe contact JB?
I got the same email, showing the same price of $699.

        • +1

Chat said it was an error in the email for 699. They wont honor that.

          • +1

@alo1234: I sent an enquiry on Sunday and received the same response on Monday, but received an email this afternoon that they will honour the price after all.

            • @ikey2: Oh nice, would you please share that email? I couldn't seem to find it or maybe they didn't send to everyone.

              • @alo1234: Sorry, I don't know how to do that. I loaded it to my account under files but cannot seem to get a link to post it here.

            • @ikey2: nice one, wonder if they will update price or if it was just for you

              • @nhutty: Just go to chat, mentioned to them that you received the original email with 699 advertised, and someone was getting it for 699. They will ask for your email address and they will probably honour it. I've just paid for it with the Ultimate Gift card deal from Amazon with 7% off, total $650!

              • @nhutty: I assume it is anyone who emailed about the price not being available when trying to complete the purchase. When i saw it and noticed it was full price on the website I suspected a pricing error. So sent the enquiry as soon as i could as i thought that there was a chance that they may honour it if my enquiry was made before they sent a pricing error update email.

        • Can you pls share the screenshot of that email (without your details).
          Thanks!

      • Man I saw the same thing and thought "what a deal".

Knew it was too good to be true :(

  • +3

    Get a quest 3!

    • +11

ChatGPT says a lot of shit, doesn't make it true.

Edit: Sure, downvote me like a coward, but if you actually do a Google search, then you'll quickly see it's all just speculation from clickbait websites and Reddit. There's nothing factual about the Quest 4 yet, but ChatGPT is presenting that speculation as if it were fact. So, let me repeat myself: ChatGPT says a lot of shit, doesn't make it true.

      • +1

ChatGPT says a lot of shit, doesn't make it tru

The term you are looking for is ‘hallucination’.

        • +2

Yes, I know what hallucination means, and avoiding the term was a choice, not ignorance.

I hate the term because it downplays the misinformation this AI slop is spreading.

        • +1

AI hallucination occurs when an AI model generates false, misleading, or nonsensical information that appears plausible but is not based on real data or external references—produced solely through internal inference.

"Says a lot of shit, doesn’t make it true" can also imply that the misinformation originated from an external source.

The key distinction is that hallucination involves internally generated falsehoods, whereas externally sourced misinformation comes from flawed or inaccurate outside data rather than AI fabrication.

An example of "Says a lot of shit, doesn’t make it true" is JB Hifi sending me an email to Preorder Quest 3 for $699, but then you click through and it's $799.

      • -5

Damn, I didn't vote you down. But it seems someone did and it hit a nerve. Why so much hate for my bro ChatGPT? Paid version of ChatGPT is so good bro. Don't rely on Google. Google search is ok but ChatGPT is Googles replacement bro. Get the subscription it's better yo.

        • +4

          Don't rely on Google

And yet, a 5 second Google search plus a few clicks proved what ChatGPT regurgitated as incorrect. How exactly does that make ChatGPT better?

          • -2

@MattCat: And yet, a 5 second ChatGPT search proved what Google regurgitated as incorrect. How exactly does that make Google better?

            • +3

@Dollar Dreamer: Ask ChatGPT for it's sources then. Show me a single link that's legit, with reputable sources, because all I'm seeing is clickbait, with carefully chosen wording to avoid accountability. If I were a betting man, I'd wager sites like these are where ChatGPT is getting it all from:

              https://www.lifewire.com/meta-quest-4-8710609

"When Will the Meta Quest 4 Be Released? Much like the Meta Quest Pro 2, we’ve yet to see any official rumblings about a proper release date for the Meta Quest 4"

              https://vrdb.app/blog/everything-we-know-about-meta-quest-4

"What we expect from the Meta Quest 4? The Quest 4 is rumored to feature a display with a resolution of 2392×2560 pixels per eye and a 90Hz refresh rate."

              https://www.androidcentral.com/gaming/virtual-reality/meta-q…

"Below is a speculative list of what we'd love the Meta Quest 4 to deliver"

              • -3

@MattCat: You went full nerd there, never go full nerd. Maybe ChatGPT has hacked the Meta Quest hardware developers computers and gotten the info straight from the source? Things Google can't do bro. You never know, ChatGPT AI is getting mega smart bro. I am just pulling your leg. Just relax, it's a beautiful Sunday afternoon, no need to get so worked up.

                • +1

@Dollar Dreamer: Finding and providing sources to back up one's claims is "getting worked up" now? You can't just spread AI nonsense, and just brush it off as "just joking" when someone calls you out on it.

People need to learn how to fact check, and call out others when they don't. And frankly, not enough people are doing so.

        • I don't really feel either way in this discussion.

but next time if you want to mic drop someone on the internet (with links included) just use perplexity ai. that's what it's meant for ai search engine that only gets info from sources with reputation.

    • Will there be any budget friendly Microsoft Hololen? It's close to a decade for them.

  • +4

Since nobody has mentioned it yet, don't forget before purchasing that there is a $47 Meta app store credit available if you use OZBargain's referral link generator. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/api/referral/760

    • +1

I'll highlight that point..see Referral Link above. :-)

  • +1

Something like the q2 deal and I'll upgrade mine. 3 will be my go as for high resolution and throughput. 10% is hard to justify my little usage.

  • +1

3s at $600 is not much of a deal - the upgrade to 3 is worth few hundred easy

  • Got my son the 3s and I had to do all the setting up and stuff.

It's pretty good for what he plays. Can handle all the games it's been thrown at even the batman game and yeah, not bad for VR action.

  • Waiting for them to implement eye tracking before I bother upgrading from my 2.

  • Just annoyed they didn't release the game for the Rift. PC rendering would be so much better.

  • +1

Qudos to JB who have honored their $699 price error for the Quest 3 512GB.

Enquired via online chat on the day the email was received, was advised that it was an error and had been confirmed as an error from Meta, told them that it was bad form and I would shop elsewhere.

Yesterday received an email letting me know they would honour the $699 if I still wanted to proceed, of course!

Just sent me an SMS link to a basket and completed the purchase.

Not sure of their internal processes, or value of me as a good customer, or maybe even pressure applied by Meta themselves.

Either way it was a win all round for me, anyone else?

    YMMV
