From the image it looks like these are just plastic with cement filled in, I have a set like this and they are rubbish. Save a little more and get cast iron.

    • Would you mind elaborating on the advantage of the cast iron. I have never used either so i have no idea.

Cast iron are much smaller for the same weight and feel a lot better to lift, as opposed to the cement filled ones being very big for the small amount that they weigh.

These plastic ones are also of a poor quality construction and scratch easily. They take up a lot of room on the bar, so when you get stronger and want to increase the weight you'll find that no more will fit on the bar.

It's hard to explain to someone why cast iron is better, it's just something you know once you have tried both types. Maybe see if you can try them out first.

Ive got plastic ones too, had them for ages, not so sure about the scratching easily part, but yeah they look massive and when people seem them and have a go at lifting them they always say "oh wow, thought these would be heaps heavier than that" Kinda embarrassing. But for 30 bucks these would still be a good starter.

        • where can you buy better weights?
          tia

        • Like Icer posted below you can get the cast iron version of a similar set for $49 from K-Mart which is a decent price.

Otherwise go to any fitness store and you can buy the plates inidividually or in sets.

    • The plastic with cement filled in ones are normally less dense so they are bigger and take up a bit more room.

Being plastic, you don't want to be banging them together when you do chest curls or dropping them onto the ground or against other weights etc when you finish as the plastic will wear out and some of the cement will fall out.

I have a set in the bedroom which suit me fine as I just do a few reps when watching TV at night and I am careful not to bash them.

too bad i can only lift 5kg…. both arms :(

    • +3

Yeah, it'd take you 4 trips to get them home.
or you could find someone like Brienne from A game of thrones to carry them for you.

Or use a trolly and ride it home.

        Not imaginative enough.

Strap a pair under each foot, and use them like roller skates.

I'm gonna go look in store with a magnet … cos if the photo is accurate they look like they would be steel. Steel density is 7800kg/m^3 so 5kg (each side) would be a short cylinder 60mm tall and 115mm diameter (ie 3 plates 20mm thick and 115mm diameter). Concrete density is 2400kg/m^3 so 5kg (each side) would be a short cylinder 60mm tall and 200mm diameter - those plates don't look big enough to be concrete.

you don't talk to alot of women, do you?

you prob won't earn more than seb either. Engineers get paid shitloads.

        • +4

Common misconception. I get paid less than the cleaners on site, and I'm in my fourth year out of uni.

Reminds me of the bus drivers in the mines. They earn more than supervisors of various departments, not to mention all the workers under them.

        • try mining…starting salary $75K

      Serious bargain hunter is serious.

Just bought them. They are cement filled.

      • Thanks for confirming.

  • Could also be the dense rubber coated cast iron/steel which are better than both IMO

  • Definately concrete with plastic coating. Pretty low quality and absolutely enormous. The large plates are around 20cm diametre. The bar would be really crowded when even doing basic curls.

I went to kmart and bought the aerial 20kg weight set for $49. Weights are made out of cast iron.
