  • Damn, need the A5 version.

    • +2

I'm guessing your car maintenance manual says that if A5 is not available then feel free to use A3.

Change the oil at 10k instead of 15k.

      • Yeah, will check. Oils aint oils but they are sure shrouded in mystery. Would be interesting to see a long term experiment done on various vehicles comparing ones with manufacturer spec oil grades with ones slightly different. One thing for sure, the intelligent molecules in these oils are amazing little creatures.

    • +1

In the same boat - well ford focus - but yes its every 15,000 klms - gunnna try this its so cheap

  • Fine to use without stop start motor I'm assuming.

    • +4

Yes. It's just marketing to those that have stop start bullshit technology.

I've been using it of late and happy. But then again I got it a lot cheaper

  • I don't see how this isn't suitable for a 2.0L Mazda CX-5.

    • I have a 2015 cx5 2l petrol and I believe it is suitable even if they say its not.
the owners manual specifies API SG/SH/SJ/SL/SM/SN or ILSAC GF-2 to GF-5.

This oil has an API SN rating so it falls into suitable oils on the spec sheet (owners manual).

    • The part selection guides are notoriously inaccurate. Your owners manual has the correct information regarding appropriate oil types for your car, not Repco/Autobarn/SCA etc.

  • +1

This is a top oil, and I believe contains ester synthetics.

    • +1

Definitely does not contain esters, you'll have to move up to a Group 4 oil like Penrite 10/10ths racing for that and now you're talking $80+.

Still reasonably good oil and absolutely fine for most mainstream cars, but it's just a heavily hydrocracked Group 3 mineral like all the other cheap 'full synthetic' oils.

Castrol 5w30 for under $25?!? YES PLEASE! Thanks OP, time to stock up!

Edit: 1st page of cat. Not available online or for click and collect, in store only.

    • +4

Probably a loss leader. Just trying to get foot traffic into their stores.

      • +3

Last time they had a really cheap oil I drove to 2 stores on the first day and no stock .
I'd say more a bait and switch than loss leader .

        • +1

I work with the Autobarn team that controls the catalogues. They don't do bait and switch - and it's illegal to mislead consumers like that. They do all they can to ensure there's stock in stores on time. If there's none on the first day that means there have been delays - and Covid has created some frustrating supply issues lately - but the campaigns run for 3 weeks and stores would be receiving stock.

          • @BeKind99: Hey, any reason there is no product found when selecting this oil from the catalogue?
If i search the site manually is not on sale price.
            Whats up?

        • +1

@troyww .. just wanted to let you know I have passed your feedback through to the products team for investigation.
Are you able to send me a private message with the two store names that you visited?

Our oil products are "direct from supplier" meaning that it doesn't come via our warehouse. When the catalogues are created, we work with the supplier and confirm with them that the stores will have stock. As @BeKind99 has mentioned, the current times have wrecked havoc on everything and causes delays… not just with Autobarn but every other retailer out there.

As catalogues are done months in advance, so they can be printed, this makes it impossible to change things at the last minute.

            • +1

@troyww: I'll pass on the feedback..

I've had a quick look at stock levels. Balcatta, Ellenbrook and Mandurah are showing as having decent stock levels… but the rest of them don't. (this could always be caused by an invoice not being loaded in time).

I will however pass on the feedback that most of the WA stores don't have stock yet and for the products team to chase up the suppliers.

              • @autobarn: Any stock in NSW ?

                • +2

@adpaholic: According to the back end stock levels .. Every store in NSW has stock apart from Auburn, Orange and Lismore (who all have stock as being "on order" .. so it could be a case of they have stock and just haven't entered an invoice).

Having a look around the rest of the country… the only stores which don't seem to have received their stock yet is most of WA.
It was discussed again in the office … unfortunately we're at the mercy of suppliers … no eta yet :(

That's the best I can advise… hope it helps

How does this compare to Castrol Edge?

    • wondering the same?

      • CE does not have intelligent molecules.

    • The edge's colour is more goldish, magnatec is more brownish

    • If you're comparing it to the A3/B4 variant of Edge, there will be nothing in it really. Worth noting A3/B4 edge is only API SL while this Magnetec is API SN, so depending how old your car is Edge may not be suitable.

  • +1

Worth the waiting, didn’t get that Mobil oil and now this on special.

  • You may be able to price match at SCA

    who never price match online

Still going through my 20L drum from a deal earlier this year

    • +1
    • Same. Though it got through the last of my $27 edge. Then that ridiculous 20L deal and now I'm good for another 2-3 years.

    • Same. Best oil deal I've ever had.

  • +1

Was able to get price beat at supercheap online. They had to call autobarn to see if they had any in stock. The store i used was fairfield if that helps anyone

  • +1

Looks like it has been ozbargined….

If you want the vegan based oil its 5 dollars more

  • Thanks, OP. Price matched 2 at Repco

  • Do you think this would be ok in a high mileage (180,000km) Corolla (2009)? I’ve religiously changed oil on time (with 10w30) and the car doesn’t burn any oil.

The owner’s manual has a wide tolerance of oil spec, basically takes anything brown and slippery.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Stick with what works, why risk it?

      • Yeah good point

    • +1

I wouldn't call 180k high mileage. Perhaps double that.

    • +1

It will be absolutely fine. Same running temp viscosity as the 10W-30 and lower cold viscosity which is always a good thing. My 2010 Prius has essentially the same 2ZR engine and I've used this oil over multiple oil changes.

      • +1

        Thanks heaps

        • 👍🏻

  • Can this be used for Prius (hybrid)?

    • Yep, I've run this oil in a 2010 Prius for over 100,000km. Still flying along @ 360,000km.

  • my 2014 forester thanks you OP
