        • Depends on the transcoding you need. You may want to step up to the Intel 6th gen variant as I believe that supports quicksync that is important for transcoding. It also depends on what you transcode to and from. Also if you run HA in a VM like the recommendation from madpig83 you will want to pass any USB Zigbee and Zwave stick you want to use to the VM. It may or may not be that easy to do.

I ran HA as a VM, I ran it as a docker, and eventually, I got a Dell Wyze 5060 to run HA on it by itself. This is 2 times as powerful as the Dell Wyze so you could easily use this as a HA server, but to put a media server on it too… it depends.

    • +1

I got one just for Handbrake.

  • +1

i have one of these running my plex server (storage on NAS) and general use PC for htpc
Works great, reliable, low power draw and tiny.

Long story short, my girlfriend will not be happy I saw this post…

    • Better than getting a divorce later!

    • +4

I think they only accept cash for these.

    • +2

      girlfriend is overrated.

    • +1

      Buy her one too

    • +7

Buy something for her of equal value: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09RSQMKJZ

      • +1

Hahaha omg, now I really hope she doesn't see this post or anything that shows up in future will be questioned hahahahaha

    • Did you buy enough to build a fort?

You bought enough to build a fort, didn't you?

    • If you need some assistance making her smile again, I mean…

    • How does a tiny micro form factor pc makes your gf unhappy? Why not buy her the bigger SFF version? Maybe Full Tower perhaps then she satisfied.

      • Error 404: This user could not be found since his girlfriend found his comment on this post.

  • Can someone tell me - would this be easy to set up as my networked storage???
I’d love to buy a nas but don’t want to spend $800

    • This is perfect, but jus no RAID.
Poor man's RAID maybe (USB) 🤣

      • +6

This is literally the worst for network storage. Get any random junk case and put some hard drives and old pc gear inside if you want a cheap nas.

        • NAS running 24x365.
10 Watts idle vs 100+ Watts idle for old PC. You do the math

          • @r0nmac: I call bullshit on that, I got 100+ watts consumption with dual 135w xeon CPUs, 6 disks, 10 dockers containers and 2 VMs running. That setup would not compare with any NAS as a file server while providing a lot more while costing the same (and like you said consuming more).

Regarding the consumption, I bet over 10 years I can build a NAS pc that will in the end cost less than your NAS (consumption included of course). I bet I can find a free PC (and I did before) on the street that would be more powerful than your NAS and it would still support 6 SATA drives.

Source: I have a power meter, I calculated all of this, I did move from a totally overpowered 2 x e2690 to a i7-7700 and I know the difference. The i7 consumes 50W with some load (again 10+ docker containers, some plex streaming, DBs, and misc other things), which makes your 100W+ idle not a valid argument.

    • +1

This? Comments above already use this as a plex server, DLNA server, etc.

It's more a question of how you're going to setup and connect your storage to this device as it's physically only so many USB ports, one SATA port and one mini pcie connection (yes there's.. adapters to turn that SATA and mini into as many PCIE devices as your lanes can support but ick) which you might be better off attaching a self-sourced wifi card to anyway.

    • It's not ideal for network storage due to limitations of physical connections you have access to…

    • Could build your own NAS in a cube case. $100 for a Haswell CPU + MB + RAM combo on eBay, another $70 for the case, and $70 for the power supply.

Double the price of this but you get hard drive capability and modularity.

      • Thanks

      • Can you link we an appropriate haswell cpu

        • Just about anything will do for a file server.

Something like this is what I was describing.

Also check local Facebook Marketplace/Gumtree for potentially better prices.

  • This or a Pi 4B for Pi-Hole, Omada Controller, and Nginx?

Already have a custom NAS/server for Plex and Co.

    • +3

      This with Dockers

      • That's what I thought, just a little concerned about power consumption but it's probably like a 5W difference.

Might be cool to run a Proxmox cluster with them.

        • I used to have this. It's about 10 Watts idle. Pi4 is not too different.

          • -1

@r0nmac: on the internet most references I can find indicates Pi4 idles at about 4-5W. 10W vs 5W is not negligible for everyone.

  • If I replace the SSD with my own 500gb, will I lose the Win10 licence?
    How do I reinstall it?

    • +2

Note the windows serial key before swapping drives out perhaps?

    • +1

You could take an image of the original SSD and load it onto your 500GB one.

    • +5

Windows 10 license key can be found using various software. Or you can run the command in command prompt

      wmic path softwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey

      or in Powershell

      powershell "(Get-WmiObject -query 'select * from SoftwareLicensingService').OA3xOriginalProductKey"

plus Microsoft's servers are smart enough to recognize the OS being reinstalled on the same machine. If you nuke the drive and reinstall Windows on any PC, you'll find that the activation is automatic — user doesn't need to do anything.

    • +6

The license will be tied to the device - a new SSD etc will simply be seen as a new drive and will assume the existing license.

      • +1

I believe in recent history, activation information was stored on motherboards with UEFI.

    • Thanks all, will get one.

    • Most of these office business machines has a windows license key sticker. The digital licence is embedded in BIOS it will automatically activate once connected to the internet no need to enter serial key.

  • If I didn't already have a small HP refurb lappie used to run Pi-Hole on Docker, acting as a DLNA server and media centre, hmm.

    • +1

Ah, but do you have redundancy?

  • +2

    Hello
Will you have any upcoming deals for T480 or T480s ?

    • +9

We have Lenovo Yoga's incoming next week! 8th gen i5 variant 2in1s , and decent prices, will chuck up a nice sale for it

      • X1 Yoga Gen 3? Will you have any with 16GB, seeing as the RAM is soldered?

  • Can any one please tell me a comparison between this and the m700?

    • +1

4th vs 6th gen Intel. I believe H265 QuickSync started with 6th gen so may be a key factor if using as a Plex server.

      • Thank you. That's the main use case

  • +6

Only if Ozbargain have a seller reviews sections, I just want to make a comment on how good the seller is. Very good communication and extremely helpful both on ozbargain and direct email.
Needed a 2.5in SSD bracket after I received my M900. Got sent one totally free of charge the very next day. The Lenovo M900 was practically brand new. Not a scratch!
I'm sure others would have the same experience.

    • +2

Hey! Cheers for the recommendation, we're always happy to help. And if we miss something, we'll be sure too help out

  • Literally bought the ThinkCentre M700 Tiny - i5 6400T | 8GB | 128GB a few days ago at $209 hahaha oh well :(

    • -1

      you bought a better deal

this pc is way older and is a poor desktop or htpc these days

      • Also 6400 in description of this deal

    • Now the price is $169 + $12 delivery fee@=$181

  • For the m700, is it worth $45 to upgrade ram to 16gb

    • +1

Probably..? Technically a 8gb stick is probably cheaper to buy solo but these come with 2*4gb sticks right? So you'd need to replace both yourself making it more expensive whereas they'll swap out for you.

(not a rep. The store rep might be able to confirm)

    • I would.

    • That would depend on whether you are capping out 8 GB in your usecase. If you are, and you note a performance issue because of it, then yes. If you aren't, then there's no benefit for spending the money. 8gb is fine for a lot of normal desktop /study / office computing. There are more specific scenarios that benefit from more ram.

  • OP - are there anymore HP ELITEDESK 800 G2s on the way?

    • +3

      Yeah next week confirmed!

      • Thanks for answering.

      • Hi, as a matter of interest do you have any i7 units coming in on the horizon?
Also, is there any chance you might be able source the Vesa-mounting hardware for the micro-formfactor PCs?

      • Will they be similar specs and pricing to the out of stock listing that’s up on the site now?

    • Would you go one of these M93P Tiny (for $130 plus upgrades) or an Elitedesk 800 G2 (based on previous pricing for probably double)?

I’ve got a SBC with a big hdd for media storage (Odroid HC2 + 18TB) but as I add things to the server the CPU is struggling and things are starting to slow down… Plus the Ordroid is 32-bit so support is starting to dry up.

I’m thinking the solution might be to get a tiny desktop like this deal to run all the containers and take the pressure off the NAS, but wonder if it’s good value or I’m better spending a little more?

  • How would this go for playing minecraft?

    • +1

      Yes

    • +1

It's a Goliath of a machine in Minecraft playability terms. That game uses very little grunt to run.

  • Soooo I bought some ram and ssd on sale recently to upgrade my parents itx build to an Intel i3/i5 nuc. But nuc would be brand new 11th gen and cost 450-600 bucks…(not yet bought)

The M700 tiny is probably faster than the i3 nuc and like a 3rd the price. Unsure re i5 11th gen though and this

Should I return the unopened ssd/ram to Amazon and buy the M700 tiny for my parents??

Their build is an aging 3570 i5 4gb ram mini itx build but it's custom so needs dusting and cleaning here and there (by me of course).. These are low/no maintenance similar to an Intel nuc.. But the idea behind the nuc is they're pretty bullet proof and will last them a long time. Emails and web browsing is the use case. It's been several years on the current machine.

Worth buying brand new vs the M700?? (6th gen)

    Gimme Ya thoughts peeps.

    • +1

Ended up biting the bullet after all on the M700 Tiny.. Such a great deal. I suggest anyone else go for the 6400T as well IMO. True quad core instead of 2 core 4 thread. Being newer helps too for longevity (in theory).

For the price of this.. In a few years time. The 8-10th gen equivs will be around and probably similar price. Combined probably still cheaper than a brand new Intel Nuc!

      • I bought NUC i5 10th gen for my dad as his daily, not sure but first unit had sleep issue, everytime it goes to sleep it crash windows and has to hard restart. Reinstalled windows and same issue. Contacted the seller they RMA it and refunded without question.
Ended up buying another one from another seller, not quite similar issue, but once in a while after sleep, when waking it up it would give system overheated warning, even though the case is sitting on a desk. Been googling around, but can't seem to find an exact cause for this issue. Some says it's related to the new windows modern standby mode.
        Anyone else had same experience?

    • +1

for a desktop? sweet spot value is an optiplex usff with intels 6 core 8500T, can find them for around $350

for a htpc a firestick 4k is definitely the way to go

    • The M700 tiny is probably faster than the i3 nuc

Possibly not. The 11th gen i3 in question does have some architectural improvements and a much higher boost clock, with the end result being significantly higher single thread and slightly higher multithread perf as per passmark: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i5-6400T-vs-Intel…

That said, the M700 definitely wins on price, so there's that. And the lower price sets you up will for a better upgrade in a couple years. I wouldn't get brand new 11th gen now anyway, 12th gen is a huge step up - 11th is past its prime and better left for sales/reburbs in a few years.

      • Yeah price really won out here. Less than a 3rd total cost for 80-90% of the performance. More usb ports and rear audio jacks are a bonus. Will suit just fine for a glorified office machine.

        • Did you upgrade to 16gb or leave it as 8gb?

          • @Psygnosis: Left it at 8 personally. Web, mail occasionally YouTube? 8 is enough. Their current is 4gb anyway (never had any issues) so it's an upgrade regardless!

However, if I was buying for myself for whatever purpose I probably would've upped to 16gb. Really use case dependant. I KNOW they don't need 16gb. I don't know whether I might in the future! (again not buying for me but this is my thought process!)

  • +1

Ey yo, what size ram is it? If I get 8gb know can I upgrade it easily to 16gb later on?

    Is the 8gb in the 6500T 1 stick or 2x 4?

    • Asked and answered by OP in an earlier comment…

      its 2* 4gb , but with 16Gb itll be 2* 8gb

  • Is there TPM in BIOS and does it have hardware virtualisation VT-d, please?

    • I had previously picked up one of these devices from another seller with similar specs - Lenovo M93P (i5 4590T, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, VGA & DP).

Not sure if the device in OP's post has the same BIOS, but I've just checked my M93P BIOS:
      * TPM - No, I was not able to locate it in the BIOS (checked all the (sub)menus).
      * VT-d - Yes, I was able to locate it in the BIOS and had the option to Enable/Disable.

    • Own the same model, can confirm you can enable VT and TPM. TPM need some steps tho.

      • TPM need some steps tho

just if you have them steps nearby please? :)

  • ordered one of the M700's to replace oldies crappy old desktop - 6th gen would be enough and i can upgrade ram/storage myself down the track if needed
    Love these little things

  • Oh, why not..

  • +1

Anything 7th or 8th gen Intel coming up, rep?

    • +2

I recently got a 7th gen dell i5 7500t from the site hybrid hardware. $190 and works well, tinkering with Linux on it.

      • RX8, I'm looking at a i5 8500t through these guys. Was your experience good?

        • +1

Yeah it was fine, I came across them on ebay but found it a bit cheaper directly from their site so ordered there. Although if there is an ebay discount code maybe its cheaper to get it that way.

Everything arrived as advertised and without issues, so I would recommend. Happy with what I got for the price thats for sure.

However since I had no problems I cant really comment what their support is like if you do have an issue. You're buying 2nd hand refurbished gear, so theres a bit of risk there. But their warranty sounds pretty standard and I doubt they'd be any different to other online retailers dealing with returns.

    • This.

  • would this work ideally for freenas?

    • +1

Yep. Perfect as long as you don't need a lot of drives, and don't mind running USB if or when you want to expand storage. One big benefit is relatively low power draw

      • if used as a nas, how many hard drives (SATA) can I use with this?

        • Out of the box you've got 1 internal SATA 6Gbps. Then you've got 5 USB 3.0 for external (5Gbps each)

  • Hey Rep… trying to purchase w 16gb ram and 256gb ssd. Kept on reverting back to the basic 8g + 128; are you out of stock for the upgrades?

  • Hey OP. Bought one of these the other day for $155, and I believe it’s yet to ship. Any chance I could get the difference refunded? Or happy to have my order cancelled and re-order if that’s easier.

  • Win11 on a intel 6th gen i5?

    • Are you asking if it supports it..? I believe yes plus per the listing should come with win11 pre installed. Lenovo supports it.

For a basic machine the i5 6th is plenty IMO. That's what I'm getting for my parents! Web/mail machine.

  • Hi op, any more t480s touch coming? Or any x1 variants by any chance?

  • RE M700:
Can anyone vouch for the fan noise of these things? And does the BIOS support any undervolting / lower wattage? For the purpose I have in mind, raw power isn't essential but I want it to run as close to silent as possible. CPU usage should be 25-50% pretty much 24/7

    • +1

My daughter has one of the previous i5 deals for her schoolwork. It's so quiet I can't tell if it's running while I'm in her room. I have to check the light because she leaves it on 24/7 otherwise. Never bothered trying to undervolt this. Had to reseat the RAM once. No other issues.

      • That's all I needed to know. Thank you 👍
