Asus Zenbook 14 OLED, Ryzen 5 5625U, 2.8k OLED 90hz, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD $1289 (Free Shipping) + Surcharge @ Computer Alliance

100

Seems like a nice price for a well-rounded ultrabook. 1% surcharge on card and PayPal payments.

  • The 2880 x 1800 90hz OLED screen is a standout at the price
  • Large battery (75whr) for the class, should have good endurance even with the OLED panel
  • Good port selection (HDMI, USB A, 2x USB C 3.2 with DP/PD, 3.5mm jack, mSD)

Some downsides

  • 8GB of RAM
  • The AMD 5625U is a last-gen chip. Perfectly fine for most general tasks though, and the 6000 series still has very poor availability from what I can tell…
  • No Thunderbolt

Also at Centrecom for $10 more

8GB of soldered memory sounds like a dealbreaker to me

True, depends on the target market. The macbook air still sells very well with 8gb soldered, so obviously not a dealbreaker for everyone.

macOS is generally more lean than Windows and uses less RAM though

So just turn Virtual memory in Windows like how Mac does it on default without telling you.

          • @plmko: I think you might have a term mixed up — every vaguely modern OS has used virtual memory by default for decades. The alternative is only really tenable for a minority of embedded (i.e. small or highly predictable) systems.

  • It also has touchscreen model, but didn't in market yet.

5% off if you are eBay Plus member.

  • Be warned that ASUS have horrible post purchase customer care in my experience.

I purchased a $2200 ASUS Zenbook 15 that completely died after 27 months. I tried to get them to cover it under ACL but they weren't having any of it. If I'd taken it to tribunal, I think I would have won but I just didn't have the time.

Take out an extended warranty or buy another brand that values it's customers properly.

Well, you were out of the 2 year warranty period… If you didn't pursue the tribunal more that's your fault.

    • I have a feeling the expected life of a notebook as per ACL is two years, though you would need to see if you can find any precedents.
However, it's a good if expensive lesson in always taking the Extended Replace-Only Warranty.for electronics, rather than go through the hassle of trying to force a claim under ACL.
