I reckon there are some very, very high margins in this product. Even at $229!!!

    • +6

I think you get to keep the van that it's delivered in as well as the forks etc.

    • Not really. I bought a similar set from Robert Welch for around $300 (50% discount) around 15 years ago. It is still like new after those years of hardcore everyday use.

    • -1

Ironic that this gets upvoted, yet when I imply that it's not a bargain, I get downvoted. The ridiculous margins are the entire reason they can provide such a large "discount". You're all getting scammed.

  • +7

At this price I presume the 18/10 stainless steel is Damascene and the set of cutlery is hand delivered to your house on a satin cushion by a man named Jeeves

  • +4

On the RW website it’s listed at £297 (albeit with extra serving spoons) so over $500 AUD with current conversions. I wouldn’t pay RRP or would even pause at 50% off. Sometimes there’s a sale that just hard to overlook (we have a drawer full of mismatched cutlery from over the years).

    • Confirmed not a bunters deal then.

  • +2

    Where is it made?

    • +5

It's designed in the UK. That's all that matters right? Right?!

      • +20

I was designed in the uk…not sure I’m worth $229

      • +11

And when they say designed, they mean someone logged onto a UK server via VPN to design these bad boys.

      • where things are designed reflects in certain products are made for certain markets sometimes due to the physical size of people or habits ….i find when i buy shirts in asia that they are shorter than australian shirts …..i’m 183cm tall, other products also get adjusted in places like china for the physical size of the majority of the population or the sizes of the houses and space …..

      • iphone designed in cupertino USA made in china ….lots of things are designed in one country and made in another …..ikea, designed in sweden, probably not made in sweden ….at this price $229, do people think it’s made in UK with the cost of UK labour ?

        • +1

….at this price $229, do people think it’s made in UK with the cost of UK labour ?

          … yes?

They aren't hand forged, it's made with a machine.
Even if labour cost is 10x higher, labour is only ~30% of the input cost in a labour intensive business. For manufacturing it could be as low as 10% of all input costs.

Manufacturing moves to China primarily because of greed, most of those savings are not passed on to the consumer. Now after so many years of outsourcing the skills of manufacturing labour are being lost so production cannot move back, even if China isn't cheap anymore.

Tesla's were first made in USA, now they have started Chinese manufacturing. Price is always the same.

          • @greatlamp: Lots of big names pulling out of China apparently. Looking for the next enslaved populace to take advantage of.

            • @devnull73: Vietnam is the next place for cheap labour, some chinese brands are already outsourcing to Vietnam.

          • @greatlamp: Hmm Christofle is still made on France ($$$$) and I believe Italy also still makes some cutlery sets BUT they both reflect European labour rates and don't make 42 piece $229 sets …..

            • +1

@garage sale: Tefal frypans are made in France, available on sale sometimes for $20.

People's perception of cost is skewed - labour is only a small proportion of manufacturing cost as I have explained above - then the distributor and the retailer add margins which are bigger than the entire revenue recieved by the manufacturer. Factor all that in and the fraction of rrp that covers labour costs is tiny. "Reflecting European labour costs" is just the influence of marketing skewing your perception of value.

Luxury brands that have historically been manufactured in Europe continue to do so for marketing reasons. Victorinox makes their $6 knives in Switzerland - whose labour costs are probably the highest in the world and make France and the UK look cheap. They could outsource to China, they choose not to because Swiss people are proud of their country and both their organisation and their customers value local jobs.

When Bonds moved manufacturing to China, it wasn't because Australian labour costs were too high for them to survive, it's because profits are more important.

        • RRP $700

    • +3

No need to worry, surely one of the ‘good’ countries…

    • Vietnam

    • +3

      At that RRP.. in Heaven.

  • +4

This one only $89.95 for 56 piece, also make with 18/10 stainless steel, interest to know the comparison
    https://www.catch.com.au/product/stanley-rogers-56-piece-pre…

    • The design is totally different.

      • does the design justify an almost $700 price difference?

    • +1

Try to avoid politics when eating

    • +2

forged steel v stamped steel. The shape also is a big factor in how it feels in your hand and in your mouth.

      • -1

…and how it fits in the dishwasher cutlery basket.

Even if I was one of those few people who want their cutlery to look like it's from an era when everyone thought racist jokes were a jolly good time, eh what, I still wouldn't buy the Robert Welch ones and struggle getting them in and out of the cutlery basket every single day because of those farcical bulbous handle ends.

    • +1

I would go to Myer, which has both of them, and check in person. IMO, their quality, look and feel are incomparable. I'd better buy cutlery from IKEA than Stanley Rogers. As well I read complains that SR getting rusty spots after dishwasher.

      • +2

We have the SR set linked from Catch and confirm our set has develop rust spots after cleaning them in the dishwasher, not too impressed by the quality

  • +1

I got this set last year, good price and the 10/18 steel is awesome quality.

  • +2

I think we have this set. If so, it's incredibly nice. Hard to explain, but feel it in a store and you'll understand. It's much thicker and heavier than a normal set.

  • +2

This one also seems quite nice for $129 with code "HOMSNS", free shipping for plus member too. its the same brand, $500 at Myer

  • +3

From the photos, the spoons look odd shaped. Forks also bit funny. I'm particular about cutlery, definitely need to feel before buying

    • +2

      The fork spikes look long

    • +1

i’m fussy on cutlery also , like hollow hand knives as i like thick handles but don’t want too heavy ….in this set, the soup spoons look like table / desert spoons , oval not round, so probably not ideal for eating pasta by twirling with fork and spoon.

    • Yes, I liked the look but they didn't feel as nice to hold for me. Prefer a style like the Royal Doulton classic.

  • +6

I think this is a great starter and that the Radford pieces have a lovely design. We've had this as our primary cutlery for at least six years and it was great to recently just buy some of the pieces we'd lost or wanted more of. Unlike bargains we get on this site that we think it's OK to just throw out when a better deal comes along, this stuff is high quality and I've wanted to keep going with it rather than start over. BTW: I particularly like the size of the spoons for breakfast cereal, etc… The large ones are only rarely used since we don't have soup all that often. Just my 2c.

  • just bought one from ebay store thanks!

We’ve had this cutlery since our wedding in 2005 and it is still going strong. Really nice classic design that feels nice to use. Highly recommend.

    What the Fork

  • Anyone know of a set where the fork grooves between the tines are flat instead, so food doesn't get stuck?

Been trying to find a set like that for some time.

  • So made in China?

    • made in Vietnam based on myer's review

  • -8

what a joke. It's only stainless steel. This isn't a bargain.

  • +1

Only if it's made from Valyrian steel

  • PoK just called to confirm my address for shipping (nice touch) and I asked about place of manufacture. She said she will check with the delivery ppl and let me know.

  • +1

Confirmed made in Vietnam. That was some spectacular service. I hope PoK opens up a bank, a real estate agency and start a new political party.

  • These look great.

Fortunately (unfortunately), don't need any more cutlery since I purchased 6 x Vera Wang Wedgwood Chime Nouveau 16 Piece Cutlery Sets.

Also have 2 large sets of Stanley Rogers 18/10 Cutlery Sets, so we're good when hosting a dinner party for >40.. won't need any more for at least another 2 generations. Sorry great-grand kids.

  • +1

Why does a high initial margin make people think this is a bargain? If I sell a shoe initially for $1000 (despite it costing $50 to make), and then decrease the price to $500 in a sale, would you still call it a bargain? It looks like you're all gullible, and fell into their trick.

    • People mock the RRP, and look at the price things often sell the exact same thing for for e.g on Ebay vs Amazon vs Everten vs Kitchenwarehouse vs Megaboutique ……….. for kitchen / dining items.

      • +1

I’m happy to pay a premium for the implied value a business has built into over time for anything really if I think it’s worth it to me.

In any case this deal is OOS :)

    • It's a bargain to the people who were wanting the shoes for $1,000. If no one wants the shoes for $1,000 - then it isn't a bargain.

  • I fkn love trashing our Robert Welch cutlery.
