Amazon are price matching Bunnings, similar to this deal for the hexagon starter shapes: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/713915 . Note that the 9 starter shapes are also available from Amazon for $228.65 if they are your thing.

This is a fancy high quality Smart light strip that can be operated either manually, or via Thread or Bluetooth (not wifi). Free delivery with or without Prime.

I have some of them and if you need to buy a lightstrip today they're a great choice.

1m extensions are also availble. HOWEVER note that while they are compatible with Thread (which will soon be a big deal), they are not compatible with Matter, both of which are widely touted as upcoming and revolutionary Smart Home technologies.

This is not a disaster but if you wait 6 months or so there will be a newer model that supports Matter as well. Home Assistant users will very soon be able to use these lightstrips using Thread or Bluetooth, but I don't think they're quite compatible as of today. I believe the Nanoleaf lights will work with the latest release of HA but it's currently unclear about the light strips.

As usual with smart home product many people will ask why they should i buy this when they can get get something similar for $20 from China. This is higher quality, higher performing and in most cases technologically more capable and advanced. If you don't need any of that then that's fine, I'm not insisting that you buy this by any means. You do you.

  • This or Philips hue?

    • Do you have Philips lights?

Hue works with Zigbee and Bluetooth and this works with Thread and Bluetooth. Zigbee will soon be a dead end and Matter / Thread will soon be where all the action is so there are not many reasons to be starting to get into Zigbee now if you can avoid it.

Presumably some people who are currently invested in Zigbee will be angry and emotional at it being described as a dead end and say it works perfectly fine now and for some time in the future and it will, but soon enough it will become a dead end.

      • Will Philips hub support matter?

        • +1

Yes, Hue have said they will update the firmware on the hub to act as a Matter bridge. So the hub will communicate with the lights over Zigbee, but communicate to your other Matter devices using the Matter protocol.

I agree with B3 that Matter and Thread are the future of the smart home, but Zigbee will still be around for a long time, especially if you use systems like Home Assistant which has a foundation in keeping older devices working.

@Hargain Bunter: There are literally millions - probably tens of millions - of zigbee devices out there. Locks, lights, sensors, switches, you name it. They're dirt cheap, pretty reliable, easy to set up, and the batteries last forever. A lot of the newer ones have the hardware to upgrade but many don't, and they'll continue to work for years to come.

So you say. The reality probably will be that this "alliance" will take years to agree on anything.

In the meantime zigbee is here and works. Will matter be the next new thing? Maybe, but I'll believe it when I see widespread adoption and not take the kool aid drinkers' word for it.

I believe the Nanoleaf lights will work with the latest release of HA but it's currently unclear about the light strips.

The light strip should would with Home Assistant 2022.08 using the HomeKit Controller integration which was just updated to work with Bluetooth HomeKit devices.

For that price you would expect to get some high end brand like Philips Hue which can guarantee the quality. Why would you try some unknown brand which is lack of reviews for their quality? Even Xiaomi Yee light is a much better option at least it’s approved to be reliable.
I don’t see any difference between this one and other $20 lower end brands on Amazon/eBay.

Are you trying to say Nanoleaf is an unknown brand? It is not.

    • You should really fact check first. I wouldn't call Nanoleaf unknown.
