You could use Eneloop AA > D converters but I doubt they would last for long
I wrap the aa batteries n cardboard so it's the correct diameter. They would last well enough with 4 of them.
Torch is made by Duracell who sell batteries, they probably de-optimized the efficiency to burn through batteries faster.
Me wonders if one can modify to take 18650 or 21700 cells

It's the same one. They are not rechargeable. It can charge mobile phone however.

Would be perfect if it was rechargeable. It takes 4 x D-cell batteries. What you save in the cost of the lantern, you will soon spend in batteries, especially if you plan to charge your phone using it.
