      They look dope, sound crap

Not sure you could buy better for the price but at the same time I think they would be a waste of $150

      • +2

Problem is you can't buy Pioneer SP-BS22-LR which would be way better.

        • +1

I bought Infinity R162 cheap years ago, it is so good.

          • +1

@superforever: I got the R152 cheap too a couple of years back. They were so good I had to get the R263 towers. Man they are sweet.

      • +1

Creative makes some nice active speakers in that budget.

      • +4

Second hand much better speakers can be had for same money.

        • +1

And it's one of those products that tends to be okay second hand.

  • +7

Haha, like the 2018 reference - these were $74.50 delivered from the US for those with Amazon prime… Doubt that will ever happen again.

I use them as surround speakers and they're perfect for that.

    • +3

I bought them in that same sale and use them as the rear surrounds too 🙂

    • Me too! Bought at that time along with a Chinese amp (like Fosi). Still going good.
I stopped its use just a few days ago after getting my Focal 5.1.4 setup ready. Thinking of either selling the Polks or using them as additional back surround.

  • +2

Same price on Amazon if you want to use gift cards or something.

      Active speaker not the same.

  • I'd probably just wait for Edifier's p17s to go on sale for $60 LOL

    • +2

Signal To Noise Ratio ‎77 dB - for a ported speaker - ouch!! - you'd need an amp with a fair bit of current to drive these - the polks in comparison are 89db - huge difference

      • +1

LOL it's not THAT bad - i nearly made them smoke once by connecting them to the AVR and turning it up too loud… any amp can drive these man… especially those cheap amplifiers from the chinese brands like aiyima, etc.

      • +1

Also i thought that was the 'efficiency' and not the 'signal to noise ratio' or SINAD…. electronics and amps have SINAD, not speakers.

        • yeah its the efficiency figure - 77db! its gotta be a wrong figure if you can run it with little chi fi amp - i must remember "never trust amazon specs"

          • @avtek: LOL my fosi BT20A-S runs speakers as good as my avr and stereo amp - not sure where you got this idea that 'chi-fi' products can't run speakers properly.

            • @BargainHunterJohnnyB: i have chi fi - i have chi everything - love it - i havent got that idea - was just sayin if you can run the edifiers you linked with little aiyima ch-fi amps the amazon specs must be wrong

              • @avtek: I don't run it with the 'little' Aiyima amps, I run it with a fosi audio bt20a-s and even that is 'too much' on full blast.

Trust me, the efficiency of these speakers is not to be questioned.

The thing is that these edifier's speaker's little 4 inch woofers are so big and strong that they can easily fill a living room with bass… not like a dedicated subwoofer, but many people wouldn't question its authenticity in that department.

  • Curious what do you guys use as speaker stands? I would like my front speakers off the tv bench.

  • +1
    • $340 though

      • 340 is cheap really

  • +1 for the description.

  • Are these good to be used as PC speakers? If not, what would be the recommendation for sub $150 (optimally sub $100) desktop speakers?

    • +1

Probably not just because you need an amp which is just another expense

Those Edifier MR4 listed above are probably pretty good for a set of PC speakers.

      • Better the edifier 1700BT for PC as they habe digital input and remote

    • Creative T40 Series 2

  • I'm still rocking a set of Z5500's from my childhood in the lounge room - would this be a worthwhile upgrade for the 2 front satellite speakers?
I already replaced the centre speaker with a much larger albeit no branded speaker and the difference was fairly noticable, but more sound goes to that speaker so it makes sense. Just not sure the other 2 front speakers would be a worthwhile upgrade or just wasting money.

    • +1

Yes, if you have the room, floor standing speakers are much better than Z5500.
I've had the Z5500 and never looked back after I upgrade to 5.1 floor standing speakers with amp.
Z5500 is great value for money, but they have more distortion.
If you don't have the room, some sound bar with sub-woofer are great (like Samsung, Denon)

      • Thanks Congo, exactly the kind of real world experience I was looking for :)

Looks like I've got to requsition some more funds from the treasurer (wife).. and find a way to anchor floor standing speakers down so running, clumsy toddlers don't break them. Seen a few decent looking sets at West Coast HiFi and see them posting deals on here occasionally as well, just gotta hang out for the best deal!

Maybe best when your kids are older.
I got these $400 for pair:

          plus $450 sub:
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/516538
So you can start of with a small budget of $1k (speakers only) and wait for the sale.

Q Acoustics, Klipsch, KEF are popular.

If you have young kids then stick with speakers that have metal grills. Kids love to poke/pop the centre of speakers with their fingers. Its like an irresistible bubble wrap.

The Logitech Z5500 were a good value setup which was hard to beat under $600. If you have double the budget then best route is wait for a deal on OzBargain for a 5.1 Receiver then a deal on a 5.1 speaker package. If you get the Receiver first you can reuse all your existing speakers. A 5.1 speaker package it will complete the system. Any $1200 system is going to sound better than the Z5500 regardless of brand or model.

  • OP description sounds like me at my last job interview.

  • How do these compare to those Edifier speakers that are always popping up on ozb

    • +3

these are passive, you need an amp.

The edifiers we usually see here are powered, you just need to add your audio source.

      • A mate some powered edifiers ozb favourites and they died in under a year. Absolute trash

        • Any electronics can die at any time, that's just the nature of mass produced stuff.

I've had my edifiers for over 2 years now, perfectly fine.

          • @andresampras: I've had some quality active speakers for 10 years still going. Sister had same brand lasted eight. One year is an edifier special with cheap trash components

            • +1

@Budju: You sound really angry with your sample size of one anecdote. If it were a widespread problem you'd be hearing about it more on these forums.

Keep in mind, if it died in under a year you had options for a remedy from either the company or the seller, extra hassle of course but might have taken away the bitter taste in your mouth.

Anyway you do you, I'm clearly not going to change your mind if you think they are all trash based on your experience. Whatever floats your boat… I'm not an edifier rep, just a satisfied customer.

              • @andresampras: you sound quite clueless with your theory that any electronic item will just fail randomly at any time and that's just the way the cookie crumbles. Did you ever wonder what companies base their own warranty periods on? you keep buying junk that sounds horrible and recommending it to people, if that is you.

  • I'm looking for a pair of simple speakers to connect to an amp for music. Which would you recommend that is decent and economical? $100-$200?

  • Would these be ok to use as surrounds speakers in a 5.1.4 setup? Don't really see the point in spending a lot of money on surrounds.

  • They are okay ish
Honestly don’t waste money on meh speakers and keep replacing them buy a proper one and keep it for 10 years.

    Say Kef Q150

  • Seems like a sound deal

  • On this budget go for the Edifier R1700

  • +2

The Voll P44's are an option in this price bracket, which are based on the Micca MB42X

    • Based on as in they are the same? I was looking at the miccas but if these are the same they are cheaper so they win

      • +1

Plenty of discussion on threads here on OzB about the volls. hit the search up. I've set up a few systems with them over time.

    • These are nice indeed :)

  • My experience for what it's worth…. More money on speakers doesn't guarantee better sound but less money practically does guarantee you worse sound. Don't ask me how it works, it just does. Ultimately buy the best speaker you can afford as they will usually last for years. Most important is to listen to them first or be willing and able to return them if need be. Sounds silly but many people buy on the basis of specs which can mean bugger all. What sounds good to you is what you should buy/keep.
