Wouldn't really want to be paying any more than this , so I personally don't feel it's a bargain. Plenty out there in this kind of range.

Imagine paying 180 euros (approx $260 today ) for a refurbished one in September 2018: https://archive.ph/T3ukd in Europe.

  • +2

Near 5.5 years old is kind of long in the tooth.

    • also battery life will probably be very short

  • +2

    $99 max.

  • lots apps will be older versions since you can't update to latest ios version on this tablet

    • Sure you can. It has 2GB RAM .

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPadOS_15

    • iOS16 is on 5th gen and up. This scrapes by, should last you another 2yrs if you can deal with the performance and almost definitely bad battery.

Very few apps have a requirement of iOS15, most (used) apps are iOS14+.

This is usable device but I'd spring the extra $25 for the 6th gen.

      • oic..

thought these would be too old for ios 16 etc..
anyways the battery life would be pretty bad on these old ipads

  • +2

Kudos to rep for not trying to claim they are "refurbished". At least that's honest.

  • +2

I think the 6th gen in the other links is the deal here.
I'm still using one and it is very capable.

    • these old ipads will likely have shorter battery life

can get a brand new 9th gen for $729, and that is before any sale/deals

      • Sure. But $240 is quite a lot less, and the seller states 80% battery.
I would definitely save the $500.

        • made a mistake about the 9th gen price comparison, that is 9th gen 256gb version

          the cheapest 9th gen 64GB = $499
so only about $259 less, and that is before there is a sale..

          but you get
-brand new mint condition ipad (no scratches or dents or whatever "good" condition means)
-twice the storage of these ipads
          -new 100% battery
          -new warranty
          -longer IOS support.

Even if they say it has 80% battery, how much longer would that remain so?
Don't trust these batteries since they are 5.5 years old now.
I got an old ipad, and the battery barely last 1 to 2 hours.

          • @pinkybrain: This one for $240 has cellular. Agree if you don't want that it isn't particularly exciting.
The 6th gen was released in March 2018, ended September 2019, so likely 4 years old.

I use the same model everyday, battery lasts Ok. At 86% after 3hr 24min screen on since last charge.

Again, if the comparison is with a current gen for $700 and a 6th gen for $240, I think the 6th gen is a good deal.

            • @mskeggs: who cares about cellular
for majority of people, WIFI is all they need
and you can share your phone internet if you really need internet anyway.

32GB storage is very pathetic amount of storage nowadays..

Again, if the comparison is with a current gen for $700 and a 6th gen for $240, I think the 6th gen is a good deal.

why are you comparing it with the $700 price I wrote earlier?

as I said, the cheapest model is actually 64GB 9th gen = $499
and that is what should be compared to with this ipad

It was also previously on sale 30/6/22 for $449,

The M10 chip in the 6th gen was a pretty good leap over the M9, plus the 6th gen supports Universal Control while the 5th gen does not (even though it can run iOS15). Really nice as a second screen that's also portable. I'd pay $20 extra for that alone.

Apple didn't update the cpu in the 7th gen iPad so likely the 6th gen will see a bit more life yet too, unless RAM becomes a limiting factor.

    • The 6th gen adds support for Apple Pencil and an upgrade from A9 to A10. Also a year newer, which also means another year before it becomes "vintage" and Apple stop hardware support, like battery replacements.

For $20 over the 6th gen, it's a good deal.

I've got a 5th gen iPad. Perfectly usable for web browsing and most apps. Only thing that annoys me is the mono speaker.

  • Charger will cost a bit, unless you already have one.
The battery on my iPad gave up at the 5 year mark and it costs much more than the value of the iPad to change it out (and I'm warned the glass may break - my problem and cost).
    Paperweight.

Where did you go to get it replaced? Apple will replace any battery for $165 and any time I've done a replacement with them they've never warned of any cost on breaking the glass - I assume they'd wear the cost if they screwed it up.

And it just needs a lightning cable to charge, those aren't expensive. No need to buy any kind of Apple product.

      • Yeah a repairer at a shopping centre.
I was warned it would cost between $70 and $170 so didnt bother.
Thats more than the air 2 is worth.
The youtube videos of the repair put me off DIY.

        • Yeah, I don't go to any of those repairers anymore. Blanket warning it seems to be, I had the same warning given on my galaxy S7 years ago. Might save a few bucks but get a lower quality battery and wear all the risk as a result.

It's still a good point though, paying $220 for this and $165 for a new battery in less than 6 months would suck, when you can buy a brand new iPad for $500.

  • Hrrrm. Is this worth an upgrade from my OG Air?

    • No.

    • Yes, the Air1 is quite a bit less capable than this.

Normally I recommend the Air2 but that is not going to get IOS16.
If you do see an Air2 for a good price it is probably slightly faster and has a better screen than this.

      • Minor trouble with the Air 2 is due to the way it is made, it was the most expensive of all for a screen replacement (excepting pro's of course)

Air 2 was certainly great though

  • Not recommended.

I have an Air 2 as my secondary iPad, while it works “acceptably” it is clearly end of life and the battery is not as good as before.

  • They went upto an iPad 5? I thought they stopped at 4 and went to air. I haven't really been paying attention to iPads for a while, maybe i'm wrong

    • They're up to 9 now.

iPad is the base model with a fairly crummy screen.

Air is a mid spec model with much more power and the nice screens, also Pencil2 and USB-C.

Pro is the top spec model with more fruit, also TB3.

      • I have an Air 2 with a laminated screen and an iPad 9 base model with the “crap” screen

Both as good as each other screen wise, the base iPad is an incredible bargain and fantastic machine.

        • Interesting, thanks for posting that comparison.

We have 2x iPads Air2, I will probably upgrade mine to 9s or 10s when they come out.

          • @coxymla: The new iPads are bigger and much faster.
It’s a seamless cheap massive upgrade for $500 full price.

I would probably wait to September and get the new one though.
