I've been watching the A6400 for a month or so now as I'm going overseas soon and wanted a camera I could use for both travel photography and some astrophotography paired with my telescope.

Complete beginner when it comes to cameras/photography (primarily using my Google Pixel 6 and have played around with a mate's Fujifilm XE-4 - would've bought that but its not weather sealed). From my research. the Sony A6400 is fairly well regarded and should suit my needs.

Definitely not the cheapest price its been, last deal on OzB was in Feb 2021 for $1055.20 (incl. cashback), but I'm happy to pay this price considering RRP for the kit is $1589.

  • Noice

  • Just to note the lack of in-body image stabilisation on the A6400 which might be a factor for travel photography.

If that is important to you and your use or not.

I have camera bodies with and without for different situations. But generally my EDC travel rig will have IBIS..

    I'm sure plenty don't though..

    • What do you recommend for a light weight travel camera in that case?

Sony ZV-E10 for $300 less is probably a better buy for most

Don't think I could do photography without an EVF. Too often the sun glare makes the back LCD panel unreadable when framing/colours. Works though as a vlogging camera which is its intention.

      • I have one of the origional Olympus PEN and the lack of EVF makes it pretty much useless in outdoor situations

Fujifilm xs10 would be my pick for this category of camera.

I did look at the xs10, only issues were the lack of weather sealing and price. I'm going to be in often rainy/icy/snowy conditions in northern Europe so wanted something that I wouldn't have to worry about.

  • If you get price match at Sony you can get 7% cash back too from CR

    • Do not work anymore. CR no longer provide cash back on price matched goods on the Sony Store site.

If your use case is for travelling, I would strongly recommend the Olympus E-M5 III, compact but still have many prosumer features, weather and dust sealed, and excellent IBIS that Olympus is well known for.
It is now $1160.10 after 10% off code, you can claim either BONUS M.Zuiko 25mm F1.8 or 40-150mm F4.0-5.6 R lens.
    Comparison here.

IBIS is great for leaving the tripod behind, but there's livecomp to play with if you carry one while travelling and get plenty of rewards…

  • A worthy upgrade from Nex-6 ?

  • might be worth chatting to jb live chat to see if they will price match, then stack the current 10% off promo via code at checkout

    eg

    • Haha yeah tried that and sadly JB wouldn't apply the 10% discount after price matching. Got it down to $1349 but thats as low as they'd go. Took me an hour as well to get through to them via chat.

      • No option to add the code at checkout? Some others mentioned that worked for them but maybe it’s since been patched

  • The picture quality and features on the A6400 are brilliant, I have zero complaints. As with all interchangeable cameras it is dependent on the lens you use. I have the standard Sony basic zoom offerings and some prime lens from Sigma. The inbuilt OIS in the A6500 wasn't a deal breaker for me. If I need steady video, then get a gimbal. Or use your smartphone (with a gimbal). If was travelling though I would go for a compact zoom camera, one with a lot of built in zoom, OIS, and can take images in RAW format. It's smaller, less hassle, and cheaper in case the airline loses it.
