anyone know how these work compared to their eufy counterpart?

    • Same question - I have a few eufy cams so I have been looking at the eufy floodlight

    • +1

ring floodlight cameras are very good, much better than eufy imo, but you need a paid sub…

      • +9

Paid sub….ok that's all I needed to know.

        Eufy it is!

        • But does Eufy offer free cloud recordings?

The Ring sub also gives you lifetime warranty on the cameras, if they fail out of regular warranty they will still replace the cams with new ones.

          • @LowRange: No idea if Eufy offers free cloud recording….but i wouldn't want cloud recording, local recording is fine for me.

Regarding the subscription offering full lifetime warranty, yeah that sounds about right….it's a subscription, so depending on how long it lasts you you will probably pay for the product multiple times over before needing to claim warranty.

I stand by my previous statement and i'll do what i can do avoid subscription services (especially when there are other viable options out there)

            • @whitepuma: Depends, I have 8 cameras and pay $100/yr so it will take 12-15 years before the sub cost equals the hardware costs. So guaranteed the outdoor cams will need to be replaced free before then.

And it works well with my smart home, the cameras automatically pop up a thumbnail on the TV when motion is detected, they show on the Alexa show screens. Also I have Hue lamps flash a different colour depending what camera was triggered. I don't like subs where possible but $8 a month is just one less coffee.

              • +1

@LowRange: that's fair, but from what I'm seeing online Eufy offers all of that but without subscription.

The only thing that eufy requires subscription for is cloud recording….which isn't really necessary as it supports local recording.

I could be wrong, but from what I'm reading that's the way I'm interpreting it.

How hard are they to install? is a sparkle needed?

    • +2

Hard wired into mains power. Obligatory “you need a qualified election to install” comment

    • +5

If there's already an earthed connection to where you want to put it then it's pretty straightforward, but legally, a sparkie is needed

Using this Gen 1 version since 2018.
Got 1 in front and 1 at the back.
Pretty happy with it over all. Moved from google home hub to Amazon echo show 8 for better eco system in terms of notifications, view alerts.
Be Mindful they have increased their annual plan price slighlty.

    • are you using 2 basic plans? im about to get the second ring device but the protect plans are for single or 3+. looking for ways to move forward. many people are suggesting 2 basic plans but ehn different accounts and sharing etc etc, gets messy

      • You can have 2 basic plans on the same account

        • ahhh!!! that solves it then, thanks!!!

          • @joshua_cia: I have 3 cameras and all of them are on the basic plan. Same account.

  • Does anyone know if Australian law enforcement agencies are able to ask Amazon to provide footage from these cams without involving their owners (i.e. requiring a warrant)?

We do not produce content information in response to subpoenas. We may produce non-content and content information in response to valid and binding search warrants.

“Content” means the content of data files stored in a user’s account such as videos and recordings of customer service calls.

"Amazon said in the letter it shares footage with police without a warrant under emergency circumstances involving imminent danger of death or serious physical harm. The company said it decides whether the requests meet its standards of an emergency."

Even without search warrants, Ring/Amazon might still provide the footage.

  • Anyone know how good the movement detection and time from detection to recording is on these (and the normal ring outdoor battery cams)? I have just bought the Swann Xtreem and it's crap, sending it back. I did a few tests … 1 running across my garden, the other walk across, and one at the end. Running across, I was able to get across without getting caught by the camera … it detected me, but too slow to record. Walking across it got me just before I turned the corner out of site. And standing at the other end of the garden, it wasn't able to pick me up … I had to be around within 3-4 meters. Unfortunately none of the battery ones effectively do 24 hour recording, so detect to record time is pretty important as well as distance detection.

It buffers the recording so when it detects motion it will include the activity shortly before the motion was detected. You can adjust the sensitivity, and "draw" a custom motion zone.

It can also send a snapshot as a push notification, display on Echo Shows and i also have it popup a live thumbnail on the Samsung TV's with the option to view it full screen, the TV is 75" and the image quality is really good.

I've had the floodlight cams for about 3 or 4 years and pretty happy with them. I also have the spotlight cam, indoor cam and stick up cams.

"live thumbnail on the Samsung TV's with the option to view it full screen"

Hey LowRange how does this work? Is it via an app or something?

        • +2

Looks like you need a Samsung tv that is compatible with the smart things tv app, link your Ring account to your Samsung Smart things app on your phone. Install the app on your tv and you should be good to go.

          Apparently my 2021 AU8000 isn't compatible.

        • +2

Yes it works with the Smartthings app on the TV

      • Hope do you do that on your tv?

    • I have the Ring battery cams and it generally does a good job of recording the whole event.

  • It doesn’t let me purchase more than one in the cart. Anyone tried to purchase this multiple times and got it to work?

    • I remember this happened with a similar JB deal last time around. I had to make two separate orders.

  • not sure why, but i have placed 2 x orders online with ultimate gift card and both got cancelled. I wonder if anyone had similar issues pls, thank you.

    • I went to store and bought them, only one unit per transaction, so a few transactions.
