Wife Wants $7000 Rangehood, What to Do?

Does anyone have experience with rangehoods?

Is there something that has similar airflow to the ILVE Majestic range that does not have the same cost? Wife went to a friend's house and saw how it performed and now wants one…

Airflow is 1200 m3/hr

…. Ozbargainers help me! I seriously have no idea.

Wife Wants $7000 Rangehood, What to Do?

    Divorce

    • +21

that will cost more than $7k, although ongoing cost could go to the moon
      .

      • +38

The difference between divorce and a $7,000 rangehood…. The divorce is worth it…

        • a prostitute you pay once - to go away

a wife you pay for the rest of your life

      • Not necessarily, she could earn more. If the no is one of this guys who are deadbeat he can really win out

        • +1

If she earns more then the OP will ultimately come out ahead though?

    • +116

Buy a $7k OLED to match and make it even

      • +32

        This is the way

      • +10

Wouldn't recommend starting that. My in-laws operate that way and it just means that they end up over-spending in ridiculous ways.

    • +9

Tell her to get out there on the corner and earn it

      • I take it you mean corner the market

    • Bikies 1st

  • +17

    Schweigen

    7k for a rangehood….agree with divorce ;)

    • +1

      Or Whispair

      • Why would someone downvoted you for suggesting whispair? I have a whispair and it's great!

        • +1

Dunno, they're essentially the same as the Schweigen AFAIK.
          Certainly the same concept.
          Maybe a bad experience?
To be fair, our internal unit build quality has been a little disappointing. But the general performance has been amazing.
My Vegetarian sister-in-law bought one cause she couldn't smell the bacon I was cooking.

          • @ESEMCE: I've got a Whispair too, no build quality issues & it's been great!

    • +7

      Schweigen

I thought that was some kind of swear word in German! (Until someone else suggested it below.)

      • +2

highly recommend schweigen, or whatever rangehood with the motor outside. Game changer!, maybe not as much airflow, but absolutely love it never knew of silent rangehoods even existed.

    • +2

100% worth the cost, which is still a fraction of the ILVE. We love ours and will buy again

  • +15

This is ozbargain. Buy a Weber - cook outside - and all accessories for like $6k less

    • +97

Why buy a Weber when you could be wheeling a little cart over the to public bbq?
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/382306

      • +14

Don't forget to grab some bathwater from the public tap and boil it up on the barbeque too.

        • +4

Almost forgot about that one. An Ozbargain classic.

      • +13

        Now there’s a memory

      • +14

still the best ozbargain story ever

      • +1

Thanks for sharing, what a story

      • +2

        Never gets old

      • +1

Lol did you have this bookmarked or something?

        • +1

just searched public bbq + ozbargain to bring it all back

should bookmark it though, has stuck in my head and come to mind more than once - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/563526#comment-9245276

'Only eats cold food' is not as easily searchable, had to go through my own comment history for that one

          • +1

@toniyellow: Nice! Comes up as the second search result when I google "only eat cold things ozbargain" :)

            • +1

@ak47wong: "ozbargain weird bbq park guy" - I'm feeling lucky

      • I thought about this one recently, what a classic! including stealing the neighbours power.

      • Good times, I remember that post :)

      • Oh dear. Poor guy makes a terribly funny post, and half the people call it a "troll", or are so dumb as to take it seriously. (thereby justifying the "troll" accusation?)

With a sense of humour like that, they should be forum moderators.

  • +23

    Get a new wife?

    • That will come with new headaches too.

      • At least he gets to do some bedtime 'excercise' again

  • +2

    Don’t cook anymore.

  • +9

Depending on what you cook, Robam is good for Asian cooking and very powerful

    • The bigger problem I find with Rangehoods is the noise level, I don't do flaming wok cooking at home so I don't need to move big numbers of air, bigger issues is on the lowest setting most of these ranges sound like a jet taking off. Maybe OP could sell her on noise level instead?

      • +5

Schweigen or Whispair solve this issue and move a boatload of air to boot.

  • -5

    Happy wife happy life brah

Alternatively consider is half your asset worth more than 7k 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • +28

Nah happy spouse happy house, no point only one of you being happy.

      • Caught with titty foam, you're now home alone.

    • +12

Ahh the war cry of the caged husband..

    • -1

      beta

  • +13

    Payback

Buy a 10k range hood and invite the friends over for an indoor bbq

    • +6

      Wooo… an arms race… I like these.

We have one going on at the local school to see which "mom" can turn up in the biggest and most expensive car their husband's money can buy them…

  • +56

When you buy it make sure you install grab rails around the kitchen for when you slip and get sucked toward the roof.

    • +1

      I actually lol’d

    • +8

For $7000 I would want lots of suction

      • +3

        You need diamonds for that.

  • +23

Does the wife know it costs $7000? And if so, does she still want it?

This appears not be an issue of the cost, it appears to be an issue with your relationship and maybe communication with your wife, unless a troll/flex post.

    • +5

      Humblelest flex post

      • +3

        Weirdest flex though… a $7000 rangehood!

    • Or take your wife to specsaver

  • +2

    That sucks.

Seriously though, was there a more specific reason she gave? Was it the brand, actual performance, the look? Do you cook regularly so the rangehood is actually used?

  • +6

yeah, ILVE CU89 has airflow of 1200 and costs about $1500

    • +2

We have this exact rangehood and it's great.

Couldn't imagine needing anything that moves more air, unless you're regularly wok frying for like 12 people at a time.

Our only option for an upgrade would be "silent" one with a remote/external motor for the fans.

  • +2

Wife Wants $7000 Rangehood, What to Do?

For that price, I hope it comes with a 'free' kitchen!

  • +2

    Check Gumtree etc.

I want a Falcon stove but I'm never going to pay $10k+ for a stove.

You'd be surprised what people toss out.

    • Falcon stove is a dream!! Same though - couldn’t justify the 10k+ cost.

    • +1

      Try rangecookers.co.uk

Got our rangecooker from there for $2800 delivered to our door (from the UK)
The exact same model locally was $6500 with the same wait time.

      • Hi - interesting website, how did you organise delivery was it via the website or did you have to do it yourself?

  • +5

    Give this a try: https://www.robam.com.au/product-page/hurricane-mkii-a837

    Perfect for stir-fry cooking!

    • How is this for noise on the lower settings?

      • I can vouch for Robam. Would set you back $1500-$2000 depending on the model you pick. You won't smell any cooking in your house even with high heat stir fry. Easy to clean and maintain as well. WIth regards to noise, it is pretty loud. Personally I think the noise is worth it for how well it prevents the house from smelling like cooking.

  • +1

Are you in HK or OZ? IF you are in OZ then use gumtree to check out rangehoods near you to see if there are any ILVE available.

  • +4

Appliancesonline has an outlet that they sell new appliances but with cosmetic imperfections (homeclearance.com.au)
Can often find a good one-off bargain for big appliances depending on your locality (OP seems to be from Hong Kong though??)
I haven't bought a Rangehood from them but got an ex-demo Bosch dishwasher - was very happy with the saving

  • +2

It won't just be the rangehood cost.but also someone to modify the joinery, plasterer, electrician.

You also need to see if the ceiling can accommodate- ie a beam in the way etc

  • +2

@GoldenLemonade you have got a lemon!
    The wife not the hood

  • I guess the $7000 includes electricity for the product life.

  • +5
    • -4

Now I just need to read through the body language to determine what she really wants that specific model… I have a few plans like finding someone to spray paint it in another colour whilst keeping the logo intact. A custom rangehood could be a lot better than that $7000 one. *Wink wink if you are reading honey.

Or we get something else mentioned in here. *prays

      • +10

troll post confirmed, i want my 3mins back

      • +2

Take a look at "off-board rangehoods" - Schweigen is not the only manufacturer of such products.

If going overboard with suction, you don't want the motor anywhere near the kitchen! Many options << $7000 with more suction power.

  • +1

Ozbargainers help me! I seriously have no idea

Marry someone that won't look at what others have and demand you get that

So if her friend gets a new Mercedes, will she ask for one too?

We have no idea of your financial situation. Is the range hood even necessary? Does she even cook? Lol

  • +15

Wife went to a friend's house and saw how it performed and now wants one…

Are you sure she said rangehood and not manhood?

  • +5

If you want massive airflow make are you also consider the noise of the thing. Our rangehood only very rarely gets used at max airflow because you can barely hear yourself think while it’s running at max. It’s bad enough on low.

    • +1

      THIS +1000

The wife and I both agree that our range hood does a really good job at pulling steam and fumes and what not…

But it gets used for the barest minimum time and gets switched off almost instantly because neither of us can hear ourselves think when it's on.

And we almost always heave a sigh of relief when we switch if off.

    • +1

You need a high highflow rangehood but want one with an external motor, i.e. sitting on your roof.

    • +1

      That's because you haven't got a $7000 range hood. :P

Next time get a rangehood with large area of suction with at least twin or triple motor. So you can have two fans going at low speed low noise compared to one motor screaming top of it's lungs. That's what triple motors for.

      • I’m sure there are quiet ones, but just looking at the m3/h doesn’t give the whole picture.

  • +2

7000 range hood???? What planet have i woke up on?

    • One where open plan living means loud kitchen exhausts are next to our beloved oled TVs and we contemplate the unthinkable cost for peace and quiet! Its outrageous, I know but having experienced a silent range hood; no going back.

  • +4

Get the rangehoods from Robam. The one i have got has airflow exceeding 1800..

In perth we have 1 company shop selling and installing these. Pretty sure they would have 1 on every state. You will not regret that purchase. I am not associated with them but have been using for few years and quite happy with the performance.

    • +1

      Oh saviour!

      • -1

yours for the low low price of $10k

  • +5

Wow, she literally has zero respect for you.

  • +1

My schweigen cost less than 2000 a few years back. 1600m3/hr with external motor so you can have it cranked and all you hear is the rushing of air….absolutely love it.

    • +1

Yes our silent Schweigen has been one of the best things we’ve ever installed.

    • Which model?

      • +1

UM1170-9S 900mm. Don't know if it's better or worse than other models but still going strong after 7 years.

  • +3

Have a look at Sirius. We got one due to the extraction (2000 for the twin and 2600 for the triple motor). Ours is undermount and requires 200mm or 300mm ducting, straight up, right out into the atmosphere (not roof space), but it can be ducted other ways.

Best part I like about it is the filter. It's just stainless steel and built like a tank, it would be at least 3mm thick. It's UL tested which is a requirement in some places. Sirius don't even make the filter, it's made by another company that specialise in the area. Anyway what I like is the quality and that I can wash the filter in the dishwasher.

As we sometime fry fish and what not we needed unobstructed extraction at a high volumes.

I would say it's more of a workhorse in our kitchen.

I got it at Winnings, same company as Appliances Online.

    • have Sirius also, Twin motor more than enough for what OP is after
