Wife Wants $7000 Rangehood, What to Do?

Does anyone have experience with rangehoods?

Is there something that has similar airflow to the ILVE Majestic range that does not have the same cost? Wife went to a friend's house and saw how it performed and now wants one…

Airflow is 1200 m3/hr

…. Ozbargainers help me! I seriously have no idea.

    • Oooh I like the style of this brand.

    • haha just replied with this too, they are so good! Or at least my early impressions are very good!

    • Are these inbuilt motors or external motor?
How noisy are they when running at higher speed?

      • +1

        both available.

hard to give an answer on noise. there are different speeds, higher the loader.

      • They're plenty noisy at the higher speed levels but they also move a lot more air than almost anything else. The two lower speeds are fine for almost everything and fine noise wise.

    • Sirius Black? Some people like darker colours for the kitchen.

    • Plus 1 for Sirius. I just have a single motor one - but it's a beast.

  • +1

We imported an Electrolux from China with 1500 m3/h air flow, was around 1500 all up plus a few hundred to get it installed.

    • my exhaust fan cost $150. wtf you people buying?

      • For the wok burner, the walls still get dirty and it’s in my outdoor kitchen too.

  • Chang wife. Problem solved.Simples

    • I'm assuming you meant 'change'

    • +6

a Chang wife probably would want the most expensive brand symbol in the kitchen they never cook in

to match the gucci handbag and merc in the garage

  • +11

Buy a Qasair made in Melbourne with quality imported Japanese stainless steel. I've got the Island rangehood with tripple motor. You can stir fry, sear steak and your neighbors will smell it but your house not smell. During summer it will suck all the extra heat so you wont feel hot when you cook. It's that amazing. It's got a large area of suction so no it doesnt sound like an airplane taking off. The brush surface isn't hard to clean if you clean it regulary. The filters are SS frame with aluminium honey comb, spray with $2 SuperCheapAuto degreaser or into the dishwasher.

    • +2

Thanks for another choice to look at.

Noted the heritage one has two fan speeds, 900m/sec and another 1800m/sec.

      • +1

If it's twin motor it will have two separate sets of controls where you can individual settings for eg one on low and the other on high. Or high&high and etc. Two motors on low is better than one screaming high. That's the beauty of twin motors. This isnt a budget rangehood but if you were to spend on locally made product then this is it.

    • another +1 for Qasair

    • +1

We have a qasair. The motor eventually died after 15 years. $600 to replace.

We like the filter in dishwasher simplicity.

      • My Qasair is 16 years old - still sucks majorly.

        • +1

The capacitor in the engine finally wore out. It couldn't even hold an A4 page to the grill - the new engine has it back to normal.

        • +1

I have one that's 25 years plus and was reinstalled into a new kitchen 22 years ago. Still going.

    • +1

If you're spending the money, definitely go Qasair - right up there with the best quality in the world and made locally. If I had a Gaggenau cook top, I would only pair it with a Qasair extractor.

    • +1

      @GoldenLemonade

      +1 for Qasair
We got one of the Qasair Flinders Range Rangehoods as our previous rangehood was terrible (we went overboard as we couldnt deal with the smells, steam etc in the house anymore).

If you get the one with twin motors its 1,800 M3/hr

Make sure you factor in the ducting out as that can cost as much as the rangehood itself - due to the size of the ducting it needs, due to the volume of air.

But we're very happy with it. looks good, quiet, and the filters can go in the dishwasher to get rid of the oil and fat buildup

  • Wife Wants $7000 Rangehood, What to Do?

To be honest I would have done DIVORSE

    • +4

lucky, she may have wanted a divorce

  • $7000 for a range hood!?! That's insane

  • +1

Mate, she better cook $7000 worth of food in there.

  • RUN

  • Mate if u really want to spent 7k on rangehoods there much
    better ones for 3-5k..

  • ilve, Italian made trendy trash - do you have an all marble kitchen with a marble floor and a crystal chandelier - if so maybe the ilve will suit you

qasair top quality, Australian designed and made in Melbourne ……..oh and cheaper

    • -1

yeah nah. Not sure about rangehoods, but from my experience Made in Italy = high price high quality good design, Made in oz = high price mid quality poor design

  • +1

Then she can save for it, if she wants a nice expensive thing that she will use, then go for it.
She can do whatever she wants with her own money.

  • I just installed a SIRIUS SL906LEXCEL850, you can get them for $2k
The brand literally only does rangehoods and they look magnificent (imo)

edit - sorry you confused me, I feel like it's a freestanding cooker not a rangehood?

    • the company that owns the brand, does alot of products..

  • You're doing it wrong, you're supposed to 1 up your friends if you're trying to keep up with the Joneses.

  • +1

Damn thats a serious amount to invest in only a rangehood, I reno'd my bathroom + extra toilet, toilet and laundry for that. Albeit a small house.

  • get a china one

same or better airflow than your 7k one but 1k or less

  • -1

We've had Fisher & Paykel appliances for the last 14 years - built 3 times and went with F&P each time - we liked the looks, functionality and cost balance.

This rangehood appears to have the suction rate you were after: https://www.fisherpaykel.com/au/ventilation/all-ventilation/…

RRP is half the Ilve cost you mentioned.

  • +3

    Is that you, Will Smith?

    • I hear her husband is a real slapper

  • Plot twist - wife is solo breadwinner.

  • We've got this one: https://www.fisherpaykel.com/au/ventilation/all-ventilation/…

Had it for just under a year and it's great - ventilated to outside.

    1910 m3/hour

Don't ask me why but the thing also comes with a remote controller. Not that we've used that.

    • 2 year warranty on this beast? Seriously….

      • ACCC will say “yeah, nah. For 4k that will be covered for longer.”

This one moves 1600m³/hr and cost almost a third. Honestly, your average home wok burner isn't going to test that range hood.

  • But if your friends have an Ilve we can't help you with the "keeping up with the Jones" aspect if that is what she is focused on

  • There would be massive trade offs if that was my wife….

  • I guess it depends on your financial situation.

Though, even if I had $5 million in assets and a decent income I don’t think I could justify that for a range hood.

How much cooking do you do to justify it?

  • shit my wife wants one so just spent $176

  • We have an external motor Falmec which does similar m3 for $2500.

  • Not a question for OZB community. Its a question for divorce lawyer.

  • +4

im an architect, we almost always specify Condari/Quasair rangehoods, they make single/twin/triple motors, anything above twin is absolute overkill at home
a twin motor will do about 1800 cubic metres an hour, way more than the Ilve, and unlike the ilve they dont break.
theyre marked up quite a bit at E&S and you can secure your self a good discount when you buy a couple of appliances with them.

  • Lacanche is better

  • +3

ask her boyfriend to pay for it

  • -1

Just doing some maths here. Comparing my wage with the price of what I paid for my rangehood I would need to earn 40 million a year.
So if that's what you make go for it. Otherwise it seems bit overkill to me.

    • +1

Lol what? How do you figure?

If one would be making 40 million a year, they'd would not be wasting time discussing this. Their hourly pay would be ~20k

      • +1

I paid $150 for a clearance rangehood at Bunnings. And I'm completely satisfied with that. So I expanded my wage out to see at what income I would need to earn for me to happy paying 7k. And I come up with 40 million.
Not sure why I got negged for an opinion.

        • Didn't neg you mate.

Still don't get your point, but then neither of us makes 40 million and likely don't truly know what we'd actually do if it came to that. :D

  • +1

Another troll post to the front page…

  • We bought our Schweigen for $2k. Best investment ever. Go to Goodguys ask for a good price. They reduced by $1500 for us

  • +1

    Procure new Wife.. 👍👍

  • +2

Ah, the good old 'keeping up with the Jonses'

'Honey, they have ILVE Majestic, we need one too!'

    No you don't.

This kind of attitude is a great way to bury yourself in mountains of debt, buying things you don't need.

  • Can't she buy her own rangehood?

  • Simple, get another wife !

  • What about redirecting her to another whiz bang show off feature? Due to needing a cooktop and then hood that fit the existing cutouts, I discovered Hob2Hood. I love having the light and then fan turn on automatically.

  • +1

    Say no, perhaps?

  • Posts like these make me realise even more how lucky I am

  • +1

Is your wife a child bride who wants a new shiny toy?
Talk to her and explain why spending $7000 is not a good use of money.

    • Or is the OP a big kid who is too scared to say no? Having to ask OzB to help in this scenario seems really immature to me.

OP and spouse need to have a mature discussion about it.

  • We have a Schweigen 90cm Rangehood for $3500. It was the least expensive one, that we could find, that was powerful enough to pump exhaust the 5 metres to an external wall. Cheaper, weaker ones would not have effectively exhausted the gases that distance. We absolutely didn’t want to put the exhausts either into the roof space or through the roof (potential future water leaks). The Schweigen is very quiet.

    • Can I ask how much was installation? Looking to get a similar one

      • Sorry; just saw your question. It was installed during the building of our house so I can’t really say how much it would be in an established house. But it really is a beauty.

  • Go with a practical approach if she listens to reasoning such as if you live in a pretty average or 20+ old house and will that luxurious item fit into the kitchen or so…

  • -1

I would say she doesn't work and has no concept of money. I would be saying to her if you want it that bad she needs to pay for it herself either do overtime or get a job.

Lucky my wife is frugal she will always go too cheap a option when there's good products in the mid range I'm always trying to go the next step up for durability.

    $7000 just sounds ridiculous

  • +4

So judging by all the comments here there seems to be a relative consensus on husbands gatekeeping their SO's expenses.

I'll offer a counterpoint, perhaps this is something for you both to have a discussion about. Sit down and go through alternatives and the corresponding impact to your financial situation (if any).

It took me a while to understand, but a "value-proposition" is very dependent on perception of the one who wants the item.
I may question the value prop of a $700 chef knife, and likewise my wife may have the same doubts about my similarly priced RM Williams boots.

We manage our finances together and as this is "our" financial future, we both get a say in big ticket discretionary purchases.

    • +1

Aside from some (IMHO obvious) jokes to divorce/find a new wife, I'm not seeing this perspective at all.
Plenty of suggestions for alternatives that are way cheaper but offer same or better performance which is what OP asked for in order to (as you suggest) have a conversation.

Is there something that has similar airflow to the ILVE Majestic range that does not have the same cost?

Maybe I missed the one or two comments that argue otherwise, but that wouldn't meet the "relative consensus" bar that you've alleged.

      • Perhaps this is a matter of perception, but as I scroll up (and down) I see a fair few comments that may not be joking about this. Having said that, ofcourse, my comment around "consensus" was a bit heavy-handed and hyperbolic.

Definitely think the folks providing alternatives are doing OP a great service as these would be perfect candidates for discussion.

  • The airflow doesn't seem to be that big of a deal based on this: https://www.homeclearance.com.au/p/ilve-ag90ss-90cm-ag-serie… (MepsiPax)
Maybe check out commercial rangehoods? For that price, I'm sure you could open a McDonald's

  • +2

If she's your wife, you surely know what her spending habits are like. Is it typical for her to want something this extravagant? Is there a genuine problem that needs solving and a cheaper option could do the trick? Has she got a friend who is making her feel inferior for not having extravagant things? Is this just how she's always been?

If it's to fix a genuine problem and it's not about the $7000 one, then get a cheaper one that will do the job like the ones mentioned above.

If it's out of character and it's just this person that makes her want extravagant things, I'd be more concerned with helping her with her self esteem and encouraging her to be around other people who make her feel good about herself, regardless of what her kitchen looks like.

If she's always liked extravagant things and you knew that when you married her, what's your problem? This is what you signed up for.

  • +1

you misunderstood her, she actually wants to divorce

  • +1

A wife with little respect for money.

I'll assume this is just one of many things she like to spend ridiculous money on.

  • Have been trying to find someone to install a silent rangehood in Ballarat but can't find anyone.
Modern house with open plan living decent extraction and volume are critical. Have been putting up with a crappy HN Glem package for too long.

At least your friends didn't have one of these.

Buy a chastity cage and become a simp.

  • I am also worried that this is just the tip of the iceberg. I earn a lot but not enough that this is not going to hurt.

However, if it helps my marriage, then I guess that is the way to go… It just does not seem like a good investment. At least with handbags they can be resold. I am not sure if this increases the value of the home at all.

Maybe I should write a bit less and just start being more passive in the forum; in case she is actually reading this. x_X

    • How will buying a rangehood help your marriage? Unless you want your relationship to be transactional in nature? Lowering the standard you set is a lot harder than raising it.

    • 'if it helps my marriage, then I guess that is the way to go'

if it helps you to learn to roll over and beg, then your wife thinks it is totally worth it

while you're in the supine position, she'd probably give you a nice kick in the stomach on the way out to her new lover.

if you act like a doormat, don't be surprised when others wipe their dirty feet on you ;-)

    • What happened when you spoke to her about the cheaper options mentioned in this forum? I'm not sure buying a rangehood is meant to be an investment. It serves a function.

  • Can we get an MSPaint diagram of the range hood?

  • 7k for an exhaust fan!

  • share a pic of the current kitchen setup. calling bluff on this.

  • +1

first thought of wifey seeing friends shiny new conspicuous consumption was standard hedonic treadmill desire - 'I'll have what she's having'

but then the OP's responses look like they are actually considering spending $7K+ on a rangehood

my experiences - location - a rangehood works best in a 3-sided alcove enclosure for the best draw - marginally against a wall, and NOT at all over the middle bench of an open plan kitchen where any natural breeze or air movement will see smoke waft sideways and completely miss an overhead hanging rangehood - that would be a definite WOFTAM

commercial rangehoods use powerful NOISY fans to suck through labyrinth filters which trap the oil on the metal surfaces, and may have runoff drip trays to divert and catch grease runoff in a separate receptacle. Most home kitchens won't want such an ugly metal monstrosity in their beautiful homes nor the noisy roar when cooking or socialising.

but sure - spend money you don't have, on things you don't need, to impress people you don't like - why not - YOLO !!!
