Woolworths Country Style Hot Roast Chicken: Half $5 @ Woolworths

450

Not sure if this counts as a hack or just bad maths from Woolies.
Was hunting for lunch at my local Woolies Metro. I could smell the fresh BBQ chooks so wanted to see what was on offer.
Whole Chicken $11
Quarter Chicken $3
HALF CHICKEN $5
I suspect this pricing exists at all Woolies Delis that cut up their chickens. Stuffing included.

Now which one of you is going to buy 2 halves to take to your next picnic??

Wait until the end of the day and they go down to a $1 each, sometimes less depending on the store.

Got a bag of avocadoes for 10 cents the other day.

Got a lettuce for $4.83 and thought it was a good deal

Are you selling it on Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree?

End of day, meaning when the stores about to close or at a approx time?

      • +4

Depends on the store. Our store starts to mark down around 5:30-6:00pm.

Depends on the store. One of my local one announces it through the PA. It goes from 15+ chooks to none

Its pretty rare these days as most stores dont mark bread and chicken down end of the day like they used to.

      • +7

Our coles local still does… Bread/Chicken goes done by 50%. Cheese, fruit veg can go down to 10c…. Got $15 of imported cheese for $1 last week.

Damn, the most I ever saw off a chicken was a couple of bucks, have seen the pork roasts for 1/2 price though.

@nmartin84: Normal ones get reduced to around $5 and the free range to around $6

          • +1

@nmartin84: There's never any crackling roast porks at either of my two locals.
They sell out extremely quickly. Even at their normal price.
At half price I'd snap up all that they have.

@Spending2Much: You get a lot more for a lower price if you cook it yourself.

Roast pork is very little effort to make, just dry the skin, flatten it out and rub it with a heap of salt.

        • Care to tell me which Coles?

          • @sween64: Lake Haven NSW is usually good on it, other ones on the Central Coast are pretty stingey

I've noticed Woolworths stores that bake their own bread stopped marking down bread about a year ago (excluding crusty bread). I asked two bakery managers from two different stores and got two different explanations:

        • A lot of online orders are now packed in the evening in stores, so it became a hassle to constantly refund customers who picked bread that had already been marked down by the time their order was being pulled together. The original workaround was for bread to be marked down early the next morning before opening time, but that stopped pretty quickly too.

        • Woolworths donates bread to local farmers to be used as animal feed. (Huh?)

I've noticed that Woolworths stores that do not bake their own bread (and instead rely on a different store baking the bread, freezing it, sending it to a store and then getting the store to defrost it) still mark down bread, but when bread gets marked down depends on who is responsible for markdowns that night.

        • Most of these stores mark down bread on the evening the bread was placed on the shelf.

        • One store I sometimes visit only marks down bread on the best before date or use-by date, which means the bread sits on the shelf for two or three days before it gets marked down.

I do volunteer work delivering for Meals On Wheels and we get all the end of day bread from the local Coles and Woolies. A lot of locals who know about it pop in to get free bread from us and the rest gets picked up by local farmers to feed the cows

          • @x x: I've seen my local Bakers Delight do the same thing too after they have closed for the day.

My Supermarket is almost always all cleared out of the chickens by 7pm, so never any discounted.

If they don't have half chickens you can ask for them to cut one in half. Then ask them to bag each half separately; grab both and save $1!

    • In true ozbargain fashion!

  • +7

    I want the outside half

    • +5

I always ask for the left half. I know it doesn't sound right, but I prefer it that way.

      • +11

Your left wing bias is showing.

      • You should ask for the top half if you prefer breasts or the bottom half if you prefer legs.

      • Really? I prefer the upper half.

  • +1

I prefer the right-hand (or is it right-winged?) side; it seems to be easier to carve (I'm right-handed).

I thought "Half Hot Roast Chicken" meant it was a whole 'warm' chicken.

  • Nah, this doesn't work in every store, I think. Have just bought this from the Marion shopping centre (SA) store and it's $6. But it's still cheaper and healthier than KFC's fried chicken with the bread crumbs.
