They do! We recently used ours that way
How?
Everything I've read says that type of login webpage isn't compatible?
That could be a problem for the normal Chromecast dongle, but not for Google TV:
https://chromeunboxed.com/new-chromecast-with-google-tv-hote…
@bio: There was an update a little while back. Early versions had to do that stupid sync off your phone thing that google loves to force. Current versions can change wifi on the fly.
The bigger issue in hotels are those that lock out the HDMI ports on their TV's.
@AEKaBeer: This can often be got around if the room has a DVD player. Whip the HDMI out of the bank of it then couple up the CWGTV with a female to female joint and watch it through the DVD HDMI.
Not sure but hubby set it up fine on three different TVs (haha travelling with family with multiple rooms). So much easier to watch what you want as remembers all your log ins / subscriptions
Forget that. Just get a GL.Inet mango and make your own Wifi.
Why not add this to your travel equipment? :)
Lol- I thought this comment was on the deal for the Lenovo Smart Plug, and I was very confused for a split second wondering why you'd want to use a smart plug in a hotel room of all places.
if you have two phones can't you use wifi hotspot?
Small tip, I always use my samsung phone to connect to hotel wifi
Then I share the wifi network as mobile hotspot not mobile data
I make sure the network name and password same as my home wifi
Then chromecast connects to my samsung hotspot and works just norma
Been using this trick since 2015 chrome cast gen 1
After getting one of these, I truly wish LG would make one haha. Really dislike the UI and how you switch between apps etc. What I can do in two clicks on LG, takes sometimes more than 5 on the Google TV. Maybe I'm just a noob, but I can't figure it out.
Yeah LG would be so much better, years later they get Kayo, they still don't have NBA, Ten and Paramount and Plex took an eternity to be stable.
Yeah, bring on LG :)
You press Home and switch to another app… .not hard.
I just checked my LG and no Kayo on it? Also it's utterly pathetic that they don't have NBA. Hisense TV's have NBA and LG's don't.
Kayo only works with webos 4 and above (2018 lg tvs and later)
I bought this google TV to get Kayo on my LG C7. Have to say I am disappointed with the picture quality for fast moving sports. lots of micro stutters so the picture is not as good as free to air broadcasts or my other sony android TV with kayo built in. This is not a wifi speed issue, I suspect the google TV dongle is the problem.
@TRRR: If it's any consolation to you I have ATV 4K and Kayo is horrendous. I follow them on Twitter and the amount of complaints is remarkable. I got the on a 20 dollar hack from OZB a year ago and whilst I haven't tried Kayo, I don't have issues with the other apps.
@TRRR: @TRRR writes…

Have you tried Kayo on Kodi? You might get a better experience.
Kayo Kodi app
I think he meant the dock you get when you press home, instead of going to home screen
.
We have an LG TV and were thinking of getting one. Are you saying it's not gonna make our life easier? Can't you have both UIs running in parallel? I really don't understand google tv or firestick or how they actually work. Was only considering to buy because ozbargain says we should have one.
I think the core behind Google TV is it's recommendations.
But for instance, on LG, I press home, the apps pop up nonmatter where I am, then I hover over Netflix and it pops up with continue watching for shows I was watching or I can open the app by clicking the icon.
On Google TV, you press home and you see recommended shows, then scroll down to apps, then scroll side to side through the apps to find Netflix, then open it and then choose continue watching.
Most of the apps I use don't support the integration, so are just apps to open, and don't integrate into the home screen suggestions/recommendations.
100% if you have LG web os, you don't need one. - only if you have a recent LG, like 2020+You can change in settings to choose apps to show.. Helps
@chinaman: Even if it’s the second app in the list it will means more clicks. Overall is a backwards step from my lg web os. Especially considering most services don’t fully integrate into the google TV anyway, just appear as apps
Also if you double press the home button it will let you switch between background apps. I think this is what you're going for.
Edit: I just remembered that I had to use a button re-mapper to do this. I'll check which one later.
if its a old (pre 2020 I guess) LG then this will make life better. Even if it's a new lg there are certain things that this does well like integration with google home speakers (like you can say play Hawkeye on disney+ to Google home and it'll do it on the Chromecast)
It is worth it. I have 3 of them because I really liked the first one. Changing apps as above is as simple as pressing the home button and selecting the app from your favourites. How many 'clicks' that will be will depend on how many apps you are scrolling through. Yeah, if I'm going to open say Tenplay, I'm scrolling past Netflix, Prime, YouTube, Plex and some others to get there, but that's because those regular ones are higher up.
Of you can just press the voice button and say the app you want.
Thanks everyone.
There is a setting to run it in "apps only mode" which removes all of the Google recommendations from the home page. I think it just leaves a single "featured" carousel, otherwise it just shows your installed apps. Highly recommended to enable it.
Oh sweet! This could help out my Sony tv that runs Google tv.
Wow great price. Few months ago I bought from OW $99 pickup.
I bought one of these recently. Does anyone know how to hide recommendations from apps/subscriptions that they don't have? I keep getting suggestions from Stan and Tubi, but they're both uninstalled.
a section in settings to toggle the subscriptions - also note they don't provide suggestions from other apps from the free to air channels
Probably an unpopular opinion from a google fanboy myself..
These are just OK for what they are, 1080p UI still not 4K, (yes 4k video playback)
Sluggish performance
- Ads in the UI (which you can enable apps only mode, but you lose google assistant)
- Very small amount of storage, 9 apps install and i have 232MB remaining
- Barely any decent features or updates to the official chromecast
- Price? I mean sure $70 but the firestick with 4K UI, much faster performance for $35?
I'm nitpicking I know, just dont expect a lot with this thing
Am I right that you can't cast to firestick though?
No casting? That's dumb.
no casting.. but you can with spotify, youtube etc.
You just can't 'cast apps' like KAYO (which hurts)
@Mortgagetightass: Kayo used to work but now only supports the latest version of Chromecast.
I have a Firestick Lite and apparently you can sideload it. Going to give that a go as it's the only thing missing on this $25 device.
@tonydav: @tonydav, i'd recommend this method https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12386133/redir
@Mortgagetightass: So the Fire Stick shows up on your phones/tablets YouTube app as a device you can cast to?
I went with Chromecast mainly because my parents cast a lot, and having them learn something new is difficult. If YouTube casting works the same then I'll have to consider getting a Fire Stick for their next upgrade.
Major applications (Youtube, Netflix, Prime, Disney) can cast, but not all.
I don't like the Firestick, mostly because it doesn't natively support Kayo and hacking it every time there is an update is a pain.
I have never had a problem with the Google Chromecast with TV (other than it's stupid name). My NVidia Shield TV runs out of space and I have to clean it up but I've never had to with the Google device(s) and I have the same apps installed on both of them.
I have never had a problem with the Google Chromecast with TV (other than it's stupid name).
It may sound stupid because it's actually Google TV with Chromecast.
Not according to the Google store.
They call it "Chromecast with Google TV"
Still a shit name.
@AnotherRat: Yeah, looks like we were both wrong. Pretty sh*tty name indeed.
It's Chromecast with Google TV
You can just use it like a previous generation Chromecast and drive it from your phone or tablet, right? If that's the case, any beefs you may have with the UI etc. are rendered moot.
Yes you can. Google TV is great for the recommendations it gives and a lot better than most smart TV UIs.
Particularly good if you have an older TV or a cheaper one with a clunky menu system.
Father in law gave us his old 70 inch TV when he upgraded. Very decent picture wise but an awful menu system. Fixed with the Chromecast and now with years of useful life left in our rumpus room.
Nice deal. I bought it from OW for about $78 and the interface is not bad (initial set up was quite long as I had not set up any Google IoT device before this) and the interface is quite responsive. HDMI-CEC works with my LG OLEDC6 so I it wakes up when I turn on my TV and I can use my TV remote. Signing in to my Disney+ account was bugging out using my iPhone app for some reason.
There is one serious issue that is arguably unforgivable for a product of this type from a brand as big as Google that's not found in competing products - it is missing Auto Frame Rate/Variable Frame Rate. Going in to Advanced video settings you can set resolution, HDR and frame rate of the output so I set the highest my TV supported: 4K Dolby Vision 60Hz. I also set another setting where it was to match content instead of displaying Dolby Vision all the time. Test watched a few shows like Halo and there was an inconsistent jerkiness where it was jumping after second with all panning shots. I changed the Advanced video settings to 24Hz and the same panning shots were smooth (as smooth as 24fps can be). So what it was doing before was trying to display 24fps at 60Hz instead of changing the frame rate of the device to match the content being played, which Apple TV and Firestick support (Apple doing it better with more consistency across tvOS). With 60Hz selected the interface was butter smooth, but with 24Hz it was jerky and less responsive.
What player app are you using? I watch shows on Kodi and it switches refresh rate based on the content. My tv has a film mode for other apps that don't switch on the player and are 24fps content on 60hz hdmi… Maybe yours has one too buried in settings that is disabled?
I tested it with Halo on Paramount+. I have to be honest I haven't tried many apps besides YouTube since I found out my TV won't let it send Dolby 5.1 to my receiver, or I haven't set it up correctly.
As frankyman mentions Kodi does Auto frame rate matching.
Here is the paramount+ kodi add-on.
https://www.matthuisman.nz/2021/06/paramount-plus-kodi-add-o…
So can these things auto refresh rate switch yet? I prefer the UI to my firestick but no auto refresh rate is the deal breaker.
If you use Kodi it can switch based on content
I use the Plex app mostly. I still use Kodi on some devices but find the Plex integration a little lacking. But if Kodi can do it why can't everything else?
This or Apple TV?
Apple TV is so much faster than this.
Is there a way i can put it to sleep? I often connect my headphones and next day when I try to connect to laptop it connects the chromecast automatically. Have to manually forget the device and then connect to laptop.
Will Chromecasting on this better (less lagging) than the one built-in Google tv?
If your TV has built-in Google TV, and your TV is like.. a year or two old, then I'd say the Chromecast won't be better. Chromecast hardware hasnt been updated since 2019 AFAIK.
This is still in stock at TGG…..
I wish these worked with hotel wifi that requires a login via room name and number
