  • This seems to be a better deal than the X20 deal from Good Guys Commercial but I read some features of Tp-link routers are only available with subscription whereas free with any Asus routers

    • It depends on which version of device you get. I bought a Deco x20 V2.0 in May and it came with HomeCare which is antivirus and parental controls without a subscription.

    • this really depends, If the X55 has the same issues as the X20. My X20 (from GGC) has constant drop outs. Although a theoretical upgrade from my M5, it doesn't come close to keeping the speed. Have had a ticket in with Tp-Link for months with no resolve. And doesn't look like i'm the only one with this issue

Neither this or the X20 v4 deal include the free Anti-Virus, that has long gone.
This has an extra Ethernet port, doesn't have the dedicated backhaul (Tri-Band) but on paper can offer improved WiFi speeds, but in reality doesn't.
The x20 with WiFi6 is just a large jump over WiFi5 anyway with more than enough bandwidth for most real world use cases.
If performance is so important, you would use Wired backhaul anyway and wait for WifFi6E. Most people are fine with WiFi5.

Don't be caught up with marking, all the security features are marketing. These days due to https, payloads are encrypted and a more and more DNS is also HTTPS so neither can be inspected.
If you need security then you look towards a proper security product, but need to install certificates on your devices.

    Waiting on a triband deal

    • Hows triband compare to the x55s 2x dual band?

  • +1

Excellent router. Picked it up a few months ago for 399, and worth every cent.
Perfect if you are able to run a wired backhaul, but still good enough without it (though heavy users will want tri band in that case).

  • I have a single storey home around 250m2. Certain areas like the yard has minimal signal due to placement of existing router, an Asus RT-AC68U. There's another 50m2 out to the edge of the yard. Would this solve my signal problems?

    • +2

You're probably better off picking up one of these. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/712021 to use with your existing Asus RT-AC68U

      • So just curious, is TP Link mesh any better than Asus?

        • Yes, way better. Had the asus - same one you have. Switched to google mesh. They were horrible. Switched to tp link. They are incredible

          • @BarryBargain88: Google one is getting really old now, and it was never that good to begin with.

    • Orbi is better due to it being tri-band if you are looking for wireless mesh.

  • Quick questions does triband make a huge difference in terms of performance?

    • +1

yes, there is dedicated 5ghz band used for bandwidth that is not used for devices. So in theory better performance.

      • No this model doesn't have the dedicated band for backhaul.

        • +1

Apologies I wasn't saying this specific model has 3 bands, I was asking if 3 bands is with it. Cheers!

    • +1

Yes, if you exceed 1.2ghz between nodes. So in reality no given most people's internet is below 1ghz, and streaming 4k is still only 15-20mbps.
You could exceed 1.2ghz if you download\upload a lot of high-speed content to local services like NAS, but most are limited to 1gbps per user anyway.

Also no if you wire in the nodes (Ethernet BackHaul) or wire in your high-demand clients (eg: NAS)
Slight correction: These are AX300 so bandwidth across all channels is closer to 3gbps

I am currently using the Optus supplied router, can this replace the it and plug this directly into the HFC modem?

    • Hey, did you find the answer? I am looking to replace as well.

  • Anything with a USB 3 Port? I don't need a dedicated NAS.. But want to have a HDD/SSD connected locally to store some files/movies.

  • is it possible to switch this to 2.4GHz temporarily to connect legacy 2.4-only devices?

    • +1

I have the x20, and on the app you can turn off the 5ghz channel to connect older 2.4ghz devices, and then turn back on after you have connected them

      • I've connected stacks of 2.4-only devices to my X20/m5 mesh, never had to turn off the 5 channel.

  • Price went up faaaark

  • Damn was just about to order!!

    • Great price, only drawback is US plugs, which we can bend with a plier?

    • Heaps thanks for sharing.
      Order placed. ETA 2 weeks.

  • bought 2 pack, mainly because of parental controls which are very minimal on eero without sub.
