Pretty good deal for anyone who want's to get into Wifi 6. Two of these in an AiMesh might be a decent budget Wifi 6 Mesh set up.
White version also available for an extra $4

upgrade your NBN mate.
Agreed, currently hovering at around 930Mbps, Wifi-6 devices connected at around 500Mbps.. it's fantastic.
same thing can be said for WiFi 5 and 4. Do some research and you'll get the gist of why its useful…
the bandwidth on the budget AX routers are less than more expensive older AC routers.
Thanks. Are you saying the AX routers are slower than the other variants?
AC88U ( up to Wifi5 only) - more powerful older model for comparison

@spiinl: wow, big difference. Thanks.
Faster speeds to servers on the network and better congestion management.
Can i use this with any Asus AI-Mesh router? Currently I have an AC68U
Pretty sure you can, i'm currently running it as an AI-Mesh node. My primary is a AX88U and the AX55 is a node.
Yes. That is the best thing about AiMesh.
Almost pulled the trigger on buying this at that price. But no Merlin firmware support so no deal for me…
Thinking the same thing but if it's part of a mesh set up and is not the primary unit, does it pose any issues or drawbacks if it's not merlinised? General question to anyone.
I have two RT-AX88U and a RT-AC86U in the middle and thinking of replacing the AC unit.
I've actually gone back to original firmware from Merlin. Same router RT-AX88U. Had massive DHCP issues, drop outs every 4 days or so - full reset and spent weeks diagnosing issue with tech support. Eventually went back to the original Asus firmware, and bam all the issues had disappeared.
Was not my first rodeo with Merlin also, previously had a AC88U running merlin, and an AX56U.
Thats a good point. Not sure if it would make a huge difference or not, might have to do some reading over on SnB forums to see.
Ultimately i would want them both to be on the same firmware for consistency and hope that there are no compatibility issues if they weren't…
What is the benefit of Merlin firmware?
Better version of the Asus firmware. https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/about
But this device is not supported by merlin though…
Would this be much of an upgrade over an AC1300?
I have the Asus RT-AC59U v2. Main annoyance is it doesn't work when our microwave is running
have you try changing the wireless band
I just purchased this to replace the poor quality Optus modem that's provided from them. Hope it works for me :)
I have this but my IOT devices (cam, smart plugs) on 2.4GHz keeps disconnecting from time to time. Any idea how to fix this?
Does this support custom firmware? And also recommendations of which custom firmware if anyone has done it before?
It's not listed in the supported devices list for merlin firmware. https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/
I have an RT-AC88U. If I get this, should I make the RT-AX55 the primary that’s connected to the modem and make the RT-AC88U the AiMesh node? Or is it okay to add the RT-AX55 as the node? Asking because I have the 88U perfectly set up with print server, fixed IPs, etc, and am a bit lazy about setting up a new device! 😂
How about comparing Amazon eero 6 dual-band mesh Wi-Fi 6 router with built-in Zigbee smart home hub on same price Tag at $125 !
asus allows you to change dns provider or point to pihole for example, not sure about eero (amazon probably tracks what you browse haha)
For 4 by 2 arround 250sqm house this one or mesh ??
Same boat here …
Will this be a significant upgrade from RT-AC68U? Sorry, I am not very informed on this subject. I want to improve my wifi range atleast.
i think no unless you have mostly wifi6 devices only.
if you have wifi 6 devices and faster than nbn 100
thanks, I do not know if I have wifi 6 devices tbh, and I am on 100/20 NBN.
Is this better than the Voda crappy modem?
I recently signed up with Exetel and my 5ghz seem to be getting weaker. Ran a speed test and getting expected speed. I'm thinking maybe I need to change the router?
Is there any benefit to getting premium modems like this if i"m using a mesh network anyway? I have a cheapie Kogan modem connected to my mesh and my limited understanding is that it brings in the same 50bPs as this would do, in terms of what the mesh then provides to my various devices.
nbn 50 is your bottleneck
What can Wi-Fi 6 do when the NBN speed is only 50 mbps at home?
