Not everyone is a video editor. Also why are you talking about hard drives?

      • +6

We are all talking about NVMe's here mate, what have you been smoking?

  • +2

    shiny

  • Needs to be
    5,500MB/s read speed or faster
    For PS5

    • +10

"needs" to be NVME PCIE4. Does not "need" to be 5500mbs.

      • +6

Games today are not utilizing speeds above 5500mbs but they might in the future.

        • +2

If you get this one (1TB), clearly by that time comes, you would either get a better one or just use the internal SSD.

      • +3

        Misquoted… needs, "recommended"

        https://www.playstation.com/en-au/support/hardware/ps5-insta…

Sequential read speed: 5500 MB/s or faster is recommended

It actually benchmarks above that in the PS5's tests and works fine.

Source: I have one of these.

      • +1

It did when the test on the PS5 was inaccurate, if you tested again today you'll hit about 4700Mb/s. Source, I have the exact same drive.

        • +1

So Sony stopped the easily cheatable zero fill test. Good. Anyway, it still lets us use Phison E16 based SSDs, at least for now.

  • Thanks op.

Just bought one for my ps5, postage is $7 though.

  • +2

can I use this as a drive for my PC? everyone is saying they bought for ps5, meaning this can only be used for ps5? thanks

    • +5

yeah of course, but if you aren't sure that you need it for your PC, then you can save a fair bit by going for a gen 3 drive, and the performance isn't that much different in most use cases

    • +2

If your motherboard has a slot for it yes otherwise you will need an external enclosure but yeah these are made for PC.

    • +1

im just kinda running out of space and ssd for $149 sounds good, but ok, will do research before i buy

    • +1

Possibly, it depends on what your motherboard supports. Some PC's may not have an m.2 nvme slot in which case you would need a SATA III (3) drive. If it's a relatively new pc mid range or higher I'd be pretty confident that there's an m.2 nvme slot but you'd want to double check the specs.

You can use it in any device that can use a NVMe M.2 drive. The issue of whether it can be used in a PS5 is only raised on OzBargain because PS5's REQUIRE a fast (gen 4) drive. A PC by comparison will work with any drive, but will be slower with a slow drive in it, and may not be able to take advantage of the full performance of a gen 4 drive.

Normally, for a PCIe gen 4 SSD with a heatsink, there is generally PS5 consideration.

For a normal PC, especially as we move towards 2022, Phison E16 based NVMe PCIe gen 4 SSDs are cost effective ones, but not quite true PCIe gen 4 because sustained writes of those can be beaten by flagship PCIe gen 3 SSDs. However, with Samsung cutting cost, there is currently only 1 (maybe 2, if you count NAS / server grade SSDs) flagship level SSD.

For Phison E16 based SSDs like this one, you generally prefer to get the 2TB one (as Phison E16 optimises better for 2TB).

  • Can u remove the heatsink?

These drives are fine and you probably won't notice any speed difference but since a recent PS5 firmware update the speed test for these drives has become more accurate.
These drives now register a Read speed of about 4700Mb/s where as they use to test at 5600Mb/s when the update was first released.
Personally I'd wait for a sale on a Samsung 980 Pro or WD Black 850 and you're probably only paying an extra $50 when they're on sale.

PS5's quoted read/write SSD speed is up to 5500 MB/s. It supports custom 6 priority levels (compared to 2 levels for NVMe SSDs). Given that it is PCIe gen 4 class like, it probably has a 8 channel setup. Problem is, right now, using all those 6 priority levels is hard (in terms of programming / coding) so any PCIe gen 4 SSD works fine.

PS5 allows direct storage access. Microsoft is introducing the same feature on the PC side.

        • Xbox had this from day one also.

        • +1

I picked up the Corsair 2TB based on your comment the other week, working fantastic - thanks. Any issues in the future and I will just use the internal drive.

      • Lol get a life. Just giving people a heads up that these drives now test at a lower speed below the recommended speed threshold of of 5500Mb/s

    • just received mine today, why it only read 3800+Mb/s ? even tried to reformate and the read speed kept the same

      • Yeah mate it’s a slow drive

  • it is showing $179 now or am i missing something?

    • showing 179 for me too, expired probably

      • just checked now it’s back to $149.

but i decided to buy the wd black sn850 at jb hifi for $235. had it priced match from jw computers thru phone.

  • I used to have this on my PC and now I use it in my PS5. Zero issues in terms of speed or compatibility. It juuuuust fits in there too with the heatsink.

  • Personally just bought the faster version for $199 on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B08ZDHBLTP/ref=ppx_yo_d…

    • For about the same price you can get the WD Black SN850, which is faster according to one review
