This decent looking 4G enabled tablet appears to be at the Ozbargain low posted by Clear in March:
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/690461

However the AUD/USD conversion is a bit worse so it should work out around $255AUD. Looks like both the EU version and the "Other Area" version are available for the same price, I am not sure of the difference. If you know, please let us know in the comments.

Key Specs (blatantly copied from Clear's deal):
Featuring Android 11 with Google Play, 10.4" 2000x1200 IPS display with 540nits peak brightness, 8GB RAM, 128GB Storage (MicroSD support), 7000mAh battery offering up to 11 hours, 18W USB Power Delivery charging, 4G Dual SIM, Sony 13MP Rear Camera, 8MP Front Camera, Quad Speakers, GPS/WiFi/Bluetooth 5.0, FM Radio and packs the UNISOC Tiger T618 Octa-core CPU.

  • Does this have any of the widevine issues that the lenovo is supposed to have?
How would it compare to a Samsung A8?

    • +1

Looking at the past deal, it seems to not have Widevine L1 aka no Netflix HD.

Seems to have the same SOC as the Galaxy Tab A8:
      https://www.notebookcheck.net/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-A8-LTE-2022…

So most likely similar performance but I would expect Samsung quality control and build to be better than the Teclast

      • I think it's established by now that the chipset or the GPU does not matter. These specs are overloaded and on paper great, but Widevine has increasingly become an OEM / Software issue and whether you're whitelisted by the DRM Info app and the OTT providers like Netflix / Amazon. Netflix has a whitelisted set of devices -> https://help.netflix.com/en/node/23939 - and the list isn't favourable to the cheaper Chinese Android brands.

It's really disappointing to to be prevented from viewing 1080p+ content on devices with capable hardware.

I know that Blackview tried really hard to get Netflix to whitelist them but they simply didn't want to talk to them. I'd be curious to find out if the big players are paying some sort of licensing fee. Many of the Chinese OEMs are moving to UNISOC since MediaTek require they pay them licensing fees if they want to upgrade their tablet from one Android version to another. Plus the extra fees for how many 4G bands are supported.

@Clear: It's frustrating that it has become a software overlay / monetisation game masquerading as "security"/"IP protection" and that's principally not aligned with the Android ecosystem.

      • Does the lack of Widevine L1 only affect Netflix?

What about Prime Video, Disney+ etc?

        • +1

Correct, it also seems to extend to Prime and other platforms such as Disney+ and Paramount, assuming they have integrations with Google DRM security info as the primary means of checking device configuration. Netflix notoriously seems to apply an additional overlay irrespective of the status on DRM Info. As @Clear says, what doesn't make sense is that the streaming platforms seem to be motivated by commercial/licensing reasons. If they were purely concerned about security, they'd want to exclude bad actors from stealing IP period (i.e., not just in 480p vs.1080p). You'd expect that any OEM with capable hardware be allowed to access HD content, provided they conform to security standards in their implementations of Android OS.

  • If at similar price should I get Alldocube iplay 40 Pro or Teclast T40 Pro?

    • Teclast T40 Pro is better than the Alldocube iPlay 40 Pro.

      • Why do you say that ? Something with the specs?( alldocube iplay 40 pro user here)

        • +3

Better build quality with the metal unibody instead of plastic, speakers are slightly louder, 800mAh more battery, 18W PD charging, hardware compass built in and the storage random read/writes are a lot faster.

Though the iPlay 40 Pro has 256GB storage, while the T40 Pro has 128GB storage. So really it wins against everything the iPlay 40H has.

          • @Clear: Thanks for the info. Been pretty happy with iplay 40 pro but now I'm keen to check out the teclast.

            • @Spastro: I'd stick with the iPlay 40 as it's not much of a significant upgrade.

I've had this tablet for 4or 5 months now and it's been a very solid tablet. No regrets.

    • Does it run proper tablet Android or does it run some kind of dodgy phone version?

Can this take an active pen? How does it compare to the Lenovo P11?

    • I got the lenovo pro 2020 / p11 pro 2020 and it's been pretty good. 6gb / 128gb + chuck in ya own 256gb sdcard for 49$ and it's juicer. I am yet to buy the lenovo pen, waiting for a sale as i think they've gone down to like 39$ or something at jbhifi one time and don't have the keyboard or case or a screen protector even but it was a pretty good deal for around 420$ i reckon!
