  • $840 for two years under this deal

    • For renewals it is $470 for two years. Might be worth it I reckon. Might not if your not already a member.

  • 75000 points for the 2 years renew, that's great.

  • General Question - I'm about to fly to the States with two toddlers on United. Anyone with international flying experience think a Qantas Club membership is money well spent when flying non-Qantas airlines?

(mostly thinking of lounge benefits but is the lounge even a bonus with 2x toddlers in tow?)

You won't be able to get in flying United so it would be completely useless. United have a partnership with Virgin Australia, however it doesn't look like this extends to lounge access yet (unless you have status). In this case you would need to buy lounge access from United, or have status with Star Alliance/Virgin Australia.

    • You can buy one time passes to get into United lounges. I've been to the one in LAX and it's nowhere near the quality of the Qantas ones in Australia. They had cubes of cheese and crackers to snack on, but open bar as far as I could see.

As noted, you can only get into the Qantas lounge if you're flying on a Qantas (or partner) ticket. You can get access to the 'United Club' lounges on an adhoc basis at the door (used to be able to get for $39 online, but they've stopped that since the merger). If you have an Amex Platinum card (don't we all? If not a centurion/'black' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centurion_Card) card <grin>) you could get into the Continental Presidents Club (as well as American Airlines Admirals Club, Delta Air Lines Delta Sky Club, and US Airways Club - card holder plus family) for free. As Continental & United have merged I expect it would still work….

Is club access worth it with toddlers? Speaking as someone who has travelled with 'em…. Oh yes. Not always, but it's nice to have a place you can sit down and let the little monsters roam around in relative safety whilst you knock back a glass or two of mommy/daddy calming medicine. In many you can even have a shower etc…. take a change of clothes, wash the spit off them and yourself etc….

Actually as an aside, an amex platinum card can be good value if you travel a lot even if the annual fee is high. This is because you get more points per dollar, you get free travel insurance, free loss/damage/waiver cover on car rentals…. with a little less travel, the Platinum credit card (http://www.americanexpress.com/australia/platinum-reserve-cr…) is half the price and gives you a free return flight (www.americanexpress.com/australia/campaigns/platinum_reserve…) each year or a hotel room, but only 2 complimentary lounge visits each year via Priority Pass (more are extra).

But with flights it can never be guaranteed when they will leave or arrive…. so if you've got nothing now, I'd suggest just buying a ticket to get in on the day if you are going to otherwise be hanging around for more than a couple of hours waiting for the next flight. Be careful though - if you get a door nazi they might charge you for your partner and each of your kids.

      • Great response, thank you.

join priority pass instead for lounge access regardless of airline

I don't believe you will be able to get in when flying non-oneworld airline, could be wrong. PriorityPass www.prioritypass.com was a good option until August last year, until Virgin closed access to the lounges.

United is Star Alliance - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Alliance#Member_airlines

    Qantas is oneworld - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oneworld#Member_airlines

I get access (domestic) this this due to the number of flights I do (status points). Can't imagine actually paying for Qantas lounge access. Food is very average (eg. Last time for single "hot food" they had a container of mince and a container of corn chips = Nachos, another time it was a container of mince and container of mash = cottage pie) and not varied much and you get internet access). Personally I think people are better off using the money saved at the airport food outlets, shops, etc. Might appeal to people to people who crave alcohol from the bar but that's about the only value I see in the Qantas Club.

    • Agreed… Getting QF and DJ ones because of the amount of travel doing. The only one paid for 1 year few years ago was PriorityPass.

    • I had that 'cottage pie' in MEL recently. It was actually bloody good! Was starving for some real meat + 3 veg after a month in the States, though, so mashed potato tasted great after 4 weeks of American fare. :)

      • There are cheaper ways to get mashed potato ;-)

My Gold membership is due to expire later this yera and my old Qantas Club membership (previously suspended) was to be reactivated. Rang the service centre and they were able to add the 2 year extension to my account for the price of 1 year now so all sorted to mid-2016. Thanks OP!

Qantas covers oneworld network domestic/international. PriorityPass seems to be only for international + 1 lounge available in Melbourne international - Red Carpet, and cost around $390 US per year - not worth getting, unless you travel overseas all the time I guess, it is also issued with Platinum AmEX cards as a complimentary perk. Cheaper option with less lounges access I found was Diners Club - at AUD$135 a pop or AUD$389 with MasterCard World per year http://www.dinersclub.com/airport-lounges.html.

    • The link you provided doesn't list any Australian cities?

      • +1

correct, there is no way to get anywhere in Australia, unless you have QF or DJ memberships.

PriorityPass Diners - were just an example for frequent international travellers.

Sorry, should have mentioned it more clearly.

sorry but that's not quite right - try from $64/yr :)

      • with the amount of travels i am pulling per year - extra 29$ or whatever it is after first 2 free entries is not an option on top of the standard 64$ membership.

I have had PP for a year and once hit the QF and DJ levels just cancelled it out, i had pp at 399 (also, I believe found some promotion where it was actually around 278 per first year), which was good, could travel on any airline within oz for example and get into the virgin lounge no matter hwat, they chopped it down in august last year - I heard and you have limited airports around oz accepting pp - like 2 or so now.

They were also talking to some "other" airlines to get access to the lounges - what they claimed in their publications, might have been REX or the like, but it looks like everyone told them to piss off.

It's a handy card to have when you go overseas, but I have not been going overseas much lately + can always use AMEX with the same pp attached to it :)

I dropped my qantas club membership last year. The package has been watered down so much over the last few years I would never get it again. The food is total crap and there is so many people using the lounge that its more packed in the lounge than outside. Besides I was offered renewal at $420 for 2 years before I let it expire. This is a terrible deal. Anyone with employment more than likely has access to corporate rates. They are a lot more competitive than retail, not to mention salary sacrifice.

    • +1

Eh, I have to agree. Qantas Club has progressively gotten busier and busier - it can be hard to find a seat sometimes! The food is ok depending on the lounge. Food in the HK lounge was great, most Australian lounges it varies. Coffee can be diabolical, but Canberra is ok for coffee (in house barista).

I still pony up every two years, as the opportunity to shower after a LAX-MEL leg is just too much to pass up on.

What really surprised me was how rubbish the AA Admiral's Club was. Free coffee = American coffee (brewed). For espresso, you had to pay. We wanted a couple of light breakfasts for our little ones, and had to pay $4 each for cereal and a bit of milk… inside the lounge! Tight.

      • +2

hehe, east more or less ok, Perth you have 3 options, either do not get in at all - probably more oxigen outside the lounge, sit on the floor or on someone's lap while you are inside - no other options :)

Singapore oneworld was fairly good with decent amount of food etc. London is ok.

      • +1

        the AA lounges are shockers.

The reciprocal agreements are always hit & miss. Even if you booked a codeshare flight via the Qantas website, they still sometimes say that you can't come in (until you ask to see their manager).

If you fly within Oz or OS with Jetstar, they're handy as you can have a shower, drink & a quick bite before your flight (or someone away from the angry crowds if it's delayed).

But at $235/yr, I figure you'd have to make 10 flights/yr, which would mean $23.50/flight to even come close to getting value. Otherwise buy a sandwich & a beer @ the departure terminal.

        • When one of my flights was delayed for several hours at SYD (during the strikes) they gave us a $20 meal voucher. Best feed (choice/quality of food) I've had from Qantas at the airport. Says it all based on the sums.
Also if you want any food in the Qantas Club after 8pm forget it.

  • +3

Thanks for the feedback, i think i'll pass on the lounge. It sounds like my money would be better spent just going to one of the restaurants in the terminal

    • Each to their own but I would have to agree with you here.

      • cheers. I like the idea of being "special" and being part of an exclusive club, but it doesn't sound so exclusive lol

        • The only ones you'd impress are people who haven't been in the lounges.
It's not that exclusive if you simply have to pay for entry ;-)

  • Can you use this for renewal under a corporate/society rate?

    • My corporate rate is still cheaper than this 2-for-1 deal. Better check on the rates offered to your company before you sign up to this deal.

      • I mean can you get 2-for-1 at the company rate? :)

  • Can u get into the Qantas Lounges when flying Jetstar internationally? Would be very nearly tempted.

    • +1

Yes. But only in the International Business Lounges not the First Lounges.

    • only of course if they have a lounge at that airport terminal.
And only Jetstar Australia flights. Jetstar asia (inter-asia flight) you can't go in.
But handy to grab food & drinks for your flight…..

  • Just a heads up.
If you buy a flight via the Qantas website and they throw you on a non "QF" flight, your (regular) Qantas club membership will not even get you into the Qantas lounge. I ended up on a Cathay Pacific flight (for a short leg of my journey) that I purchased via the Qantas website. They would not let me in the Qantas Club lounge. I was livid. It was unreasonable given that it was purchased from Qantas. I was told the Qantas website is like a "Flight Centre" where any airline can be used. I told Qantas I would have used an alternative website if my decision was based solely on price. In this instance, I assumed I would have lounge access. Anyway, I won't be renewing my membership next time.

    • that is dodgy as on their behalf
