    Officeworks have deals on Chromebooks.

The Duet is a great idea but very very poor execution. I bought it a year ago, fully decked out with the pen as well. Worked well for a few months and now it's completely unusable. Slow as anything. Android apps very unreliable. Requires factory resets often. Such a shame. If you look at the forums it seems to be a common issue. If you are going to run Android apps then buy an Android tablet not a Chromebook.

      Same. Bought from Amazon https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/641709
      3-4 months I don’t even use it

    • Yes i just got the 8gb one for my mother who had basic requirements for browsing, email etc and had to set it up and wasn't impressed with it at all.

    • Don't even need a few months, my Duet started to lag in the first week of use. It's now gathering dust, what a shame.

    • 100% agreed. The camera quality is horrible too. Its good for the kids to play basic games, once they are in the app it seems stable but once you have more than 2-3 apps opened its a downward spiral from there. For $299 if it lasts you a year without cracking the sh**s too much then it will probably be ok value.

I agree it can be a little slow when it wakes up. It has been a good little device for the past two years (using it right now to type this). However I am looking at upgrading to the newer OLED model with 8gb of ram, its the 4gb thats the killer.

  • How's the keyboard?

edit: backspace key look smaller than standard :/

      It's almost like it's a compact device

Got one, don’t even bother. Slow as anything

Still love mine after 6 months. Pretty much a glorified YouTube, Netflix and web browser. Love that it has chrome with extensions for adblocking, so YouTube without ads is definitely amazing.
Keyboard is good. I use a Bluetooth mouse and find it's a perfect tablet size. Small enough to pop into your carry on for a plane and portable enough to take into bed to stream.
    I'd thoroughly recommend.

Yeah. I love this thing. It's my go to device for most things and perfect for my use. Mainly for browsing/video streaming, showing music while playing guitar and for adjusting things on my server containers/home assistant.

But I can also use it for sketchup and to remote into my Mac Mini through splashtop/jump desktop to do more advanced stuff when I can't be bothered going to the computer downstairs. The removable keyboard makes it so much more usable than a standard tablet for this.
Never found it overly slow, but I haven't pushed it with anything too intensive.

    • What chrome adblock is used to block ads in youtube videos?

      • Ublock origin?

  • Can anyone comment on how the performance of the P11 tablets compares to the Duet for games? e.g. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/703474

I got a couple of Duets for my kids for remote learning but post-lockdown they have ditched the keyboards and just play Roblox etc. on them. Recently I'm frustrated that I can't install the MiFit app on them and am looking at Android tablets.

I have the Duet and had another tablet with the same SOC as the P11, and that SOC on Android is faster than Android apps on the Duet, but I don't play games so can't speak explicitly to that. Probably best to find GPU benchmarks (eg. on NotebookCheck for the respective SOCs) to get a sense of comparison there. I would be very surprised if the P11 performance is worse.

    Can you upgrade the ram?

    • +1

      No, you can't .

      • -1

        Why not?

        • Because you can't

        • Reflowing BGA components is hard when replacing memory, dealing with the software issues is worse.

  • Looks like the Duet 3 is the update to this. It's been released in the US but no indication when it's coming here.

  • Daughter uses it for school and loves it, there is no issue with any of the above.

  • so strange I was always under the impression over at least the last 6 months that the Duet was the ozbargain golden poster child of affordable everyday chromebooks..but now everyone is bagging it out… luckily I hesitated on all those deals D:

  • I have one, it is OK but can get very slow at times. And ChromeOS just has some weird shortcomings like only partial support for MIDI interfaces (my digital piano can’t connect).

  • I got one at the $267 deal. It's alright for light things and has come in handy a few times. Is it worth the 300? eh not really, I'd just rather save more money and buy a second hand surface.
