  • Pity they aren't compatible with Android phones

    • +8

are the android based smart watches ios compatible?

      • i had an old sony smart watch 3 and although it worked with ios, the google app on ios to support it is half arsed , at best.

      • They used to be, some still are. The ones that have gone with Google OS now only works on Android.

      • Yes, although due to iOS restrictions, the functionality is somewhat limited: https://wearos.google.com/#works-on

        WearOS app on iOS: https://apps.apple.com/au/app/wear-os-by-google-smartwatch/i…

Yes they are actually. Although not 100% functional.

        • Not sure why I get negged but can confirm my Android watch works reasonably well with my iPhone. It's an older watch, has it changed with Wear OS 3?

      • My garmin watch works on both pretty well

        • I also have an old Garmin which did ok just had a crap battery life. Flat out surviving 18hrs

I upgraded my series 3 to series 7. Bit disappointed given how easily s7 scratches. Owned my 3 for 4 years and not a single scratch. Owned my s7 for 4 days and full of scratches…

    • +2

I workout a lot lately and am pretty hands on at work, and yes i can confirm s7 although touted as having a tougher screen than previous versions, scratches REAL easy.

      • It's tougher against cracks, not against scratches.

        • ah - well thats good too, have hit it quite a few times too…

    • I've owned my S7 (green 45mm cellular) for around 5 months now and wear it to work, mountain biking etc and I've yet to see a scratch on it.

    • +1

more scratches on the screen or the body? i'm looking at series 7, but yet to…

    • -1

I've had quite a few apple watches and they all scratch easy

    • I has scratches on s3 from first week and got replacement from apple care. So I guess it depends on how we wear it. But I don’t have s7, cannot comment on s7.

    • +2

I bought a second-hand series 4, it was in mint condition. Then we got a puppy and within a week it was full of scratches.

    • +1

In my experience the aluminium models with glass screens scratch fairly easily. But the sapphire screens on stainless steel / titanium / ceramic models are great at resisting scratches. I've had a 2nd hand series 5 with sapphire for about 2 years and can't see any scratches.

    • The aluminium watches like this one just have glass screens that scratch as easy as any glass screen (a grain of sand, a brush against a brick wall etc) - if you hate scratches, and boy do I, get the stainless steel models. They're more expensive but the screens are made of sapphire which are harder. I have had many SS watches and never a scratch on any screen. I've owned the aluminium Apple Watch 4 and it was riddled with scratches within weeks. It's just a shame they dont put that screen on both models but have to justify the extra cost of the SS models I guess. I would never buy an aluminium watch ever again. (by the way Apple cant/wont replace screens as the cost is like 3/4 of the cost of a new one)

  • Will shopback on Amazon work for this?

    • Yep it does - bought 2 watches a month ago and got… $13…

For anyone that isn't SUPER careful with their watch (or if you play sport or gym or whatever), I got this bumper for my s6, and I think everyone should have something similar on their watch. It also means you can change colours, sort of like your phone case:
    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B09GTKMZC4

Avoid the ones with built-in screen-protector though!

    • this is nice but for those wanting a more minimal one with lower level of protection, this one has worked very well for me.

      https://www.amazon.com.au/Tersely-Protector-Watch-44mm-Premi…

doesn't even look like there's a protector on, stays on after many times putting hands in jean pockets, has withstood swimming, running sweat and it's even somewhat self healing (knicks have disappeared over time) for me

      • I did consider these, but was concerned about:
        - rainbowing on display
        - display sensitivity and/or vibrancy reduced
        - i assume it doesn't curve down the sides of the glass?
        - with soft screen protectors (and curved) for phones, dust tends to collect near the edges and create scratches - I'd assumed these would do the same

        • Nah it curves. Don’t know how the tech works but it curves around the bezel. Haven’t noticed any Sensitivity and rainbowinf issues. But time will tell, have only had it on for about 2 months

    • Ah I see what's happened - they've changed the product in the link I posted…I DON'T recommend the new version, since it has a screen cover and I have no experience with it.

The one I have is just a minimalist bumper, no screen cover. can't tell there's a protector on my watch at first glance.
      Looks like this one:
      https://www.amazon.com.au/Mugust-Compatible-Bumper-Protectiv…

    • I am using this. However even you sweat, some of the sweat could evaporate into the inside of the cover and go around the screen. When you have moisture in between the cover and the screen on the inside, the touch screen works less effectively.

Happens when I am wearing long sleeve covering the watch and sweating.

      • Yep sorry I'm recommending the bumpers sans screen; they've switched the product in the link I'd purchased from

        • No probs. Now everyone here would know why sellers are selling the ones with just the bumpers with no intact glass cover.

    • i was going to get the full on spigen super protective casing with the band and everything but figured yolo and love to rock it as it was intended (famous last words).

      • +2

        That's how I started out.
Then the slightest nano-glance against the corner of a brick wall (don't ask) and…..a scratch.

That's when I bought the bumper, no issues since.

But the initial scratch remains, as a permanent reminder of my inability to 100% protect those near and dear to me.

        • as a permanent reminder of my inability to 100% protect those near and dear to me.

I hope this is not going to be your evil genius/ bad guy super villain story arc start

  • you can pricebeat at officeworks too

  • I have this watch also and love the fact it fully charges in approx 30-40 minutes .

    • Yep I top it up usually before I leave house in morning

      • do you do sleep tracking with it?

what is actual battery usage you get out of it?

        • Yes I do sleep tracking

Lasts me 24 hours fine. Turned off sound. Brightness medium. Take a few short calls. Turned off notifications other than useful ones like emails, messages, line WhatsApp and fb, ig -‘s calls. Heartbeat sensor and apple health actively track during 1 hr workout a night.

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: so you don't do heartbeat tracking all day?

that is amazing you got it to last 24 hrs…

I thought sleep tracking was no doable due short battery life and the need to charge it daily.

            • @pinkybrain:

so you don't do heartbeat tracking all day?

well it's doing it in the background either way, but i was under the impression the workout ones took more battery?
for my smart bike I am using the dedicated renpho ai heart rate app as it collects heart rate and puts it back into the renpho bike app.
and for strength training im using the workout app to just track heart rate/ cals/time (but cals are not accurate i would say as its still counting between rests of reps…)

I wake up, put it on charge about 30-40 min between getting changed, coffee, packing up etc.
              Work.
              Dinner
              workout
              sleep
wake up and put it on charge again.

Dont get me wrong by the time I get to the charger its just above critical battery - and thats prob not fantastic for overall battery life.
If i have to top it up twice a day, its not really a drama, would top it up while i make/ eat dinner…

Im not sure if amazon return process applies the same but maybe worth asking CS if you can still do free/easy returns for the watch if you're not happy w/ battery life.
Afaik apple does not price match - but they do painless returns…

            • @pinkybrain: Hey bud just updating I just got home and my battery is 70% still. Been using it since 6-am

              • @Jimothy Wongingtons: how well does apple watch work with android phone (if works at all)
and is it necessary to own an iphone as well ?

ie like what features are missing if you don't use it with an iphone?

Also if you have an old iphone, that cannot be updated to latest version of ios
would it still work with the watch or will it get a required update message on the phone etc in order for it to work?

                • @pinkybrain: I don’t believe it works w android

                  • @Jimothy Wongingtons: is iphone essential when owning apple watch?
what data or features use/need it?

also does iphone need to run the latest version of ios in order for the apple watch to work with it?
or can you use an older iphone (not running latest version of ios) etc..
or even pair it with an ipad (running either older ios or latest version of of IOS) if we don't have latest iphone IOS version etc..

                    • @pinkybrain:

is iphone essential when owning apple watch?

…well Id say yes, otherwise it's just a fancy watch as theres no data to display?

                      also according to apple:

To set up and use a new Apple Watch, you need an iPhone 6s or later with iOS 15 or later

                      • @Jimothy Wongingtons: oic… i thought the apple watch can function on it's own ie store the data on the phone itself
as long as you have an apple account etc..

what data is displayed on the apple watch that comes from the iphone?

  • The only reason I'd want an iPhone is for these spectacular watches. I hope Google's Pixel watches do OK after all the development.

  • If the 8 wasn't rumoured to be a huge upgrade, I'd get this.

  • Is a watch tax deductible?

  • There is some discussion the new IOS won’t do the Watch 3.
