  • It says "… plus more new channel (over 15 channels in total)" - How? From where?

    • The statement is in relation to the current channels that are available on Digital Free to Air. Please visit the Freeview website to see the available channels in your area.

    Very old model from the Homecast homepage and download area it says Firmware Nov 2009 i can see why its so cheap… a few neg reviews on whirlpool too….

  • +2

    Reviews don't seem too positive (a problem with most cheap pvrs and many of the not-so cheap pvrs too for that matter), 2009 model, external infrared is quite quaint…

  • I assume this is not Freeview Phase 2 / MHEG-5 certified (ie: no Freeview Series Link / CRID etc)?

    • +1

      It's a Freeview Phase 1 model so just uses the standard EPG UI.

    Silly question.. Is the HDMI connection an output our an input? Is does not state on your site. thanks.

    • HDMI is an output.

    Not missing a minute of the Olympic action? You providing a free fox sports subscription?
    FTA misses just about all the action at the Olympics.

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSS! Finally a chance to upgrade my Betamax.

    Good deal for a twin tuner HD PVR with 500GB HDD. Good array of outputs including HDMI (and cable). +1 from me.

    • Given 1TB is only a few $ more, removed vote..

  • Having owned a homecast… They seem pretty much like a dead brand here, their support web site doesn't work. Pity, because it was an awesome device (different model) until it died repeatedly, and there was a strong community. Get a Magic PVR instead, excellent and easy to use.

    • Agree with the Magic PVR suggestion. I bought two, from ebay, probably even from this mob. Arrived within 5 business days, and look brand new to me.

    • "it died repeatedly"?? wait, it was so bad it died more than once? thanks for the heads up!

    • A magic PVR? I couldnt find that brand anywhere, not on ebay etc. Any idea where to look?

  • How is this better than the $145 (delivered) 1TB twin-tuner recorder which Myer sells?
    http://shop.myer.com.au/shop/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10051&…

    Not trying to have a go; maybe this "freeview" one is genuinely better, but it would be useful to know why it is worth more, despite having half the storage.

    Freeview = Crippleware… You don't want it.
    No ad skipping, no transferring recordings to and from the PVR. Add to that the fact that Freeview has many "phases" coming up, none of which are fully backward compatible. Currently the non-Freeview version of any PVR in Australia is the better option.

    The Homecast HT8000 was a capable budget twin HD tuner PVR, this is the poor(er) cousin.

    • +1

      Yeah Freeview sucks but there is a simple solution, load up HT8000 firmware and it removes the freeview restrictions on the HT8200, the 8200 is basically a 8000 with bigger HDD and freeview restrictions, once freeview is removed you have the same functions as the 8000.

      http://members.optusnet.com.au/nis200sx/

      You can get different firmware versions here http://pvr-tools.com/firmware/Homecast

      I have done the above to a HT8200 and can transfer recordings to PC skip ads etc.

      Note that if there are any recordings on the PVR before the firmware update you will not be able to access them once freeview is removed.

  • As bazza has already said above…

    Freeview = Crippleware

    If you arent 100% sure a device's firmware can be upgraded to get rid of Freeview, dont buy it.
    For the sake of $100 or so, wouldnt you rather a device that allows you to skip ads?
    Being forced to watch recorded tv ads should be criminal.

    I wont neg this deal because maybe there's someone out there that doesnt care about skipping TV ads, but no way on earth I'd buy this.

    • +1

      I can 100% confirm freeview can be removed on the 8200, once removed it is possible to skip ads and the files are in tp0 format which can be converted with mpeg streamclip http://www.squared5.com/

      • Thanks for the headsup Blackrose.
