1TB "Prima" Twin-Tuner HD Recorder from Myer - $145 Delivered or Instore

60

I know it's not a "brand", but I figured it's cheap enough for a 1TB to be worth posting. I saw them instore as well, and they did in fact have a $299 price badge in the shelve (the "pile" had the reduced price of $145). I am not sure how good it is, because it's not very googleable (probably a rebadged version of something else), so can't be too sure of the specs. It does have USB inputs: 1 for input, one for allowing a pc to access and copy recorded files.

Model is "PVRHD1TB" (yeah, not very imaginative)

  • Its always the software that lets these cheaper PVRs down…. and yet I have an old topfield 7100HD that is still fantastic.

    • +1

Gotta love Topfields… A PVR that can't auto-schedule recordings from the broadcast EPG is about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike. However, the new 'Masterpieces' do have some nasty bugs, like the random reset monster.

      • Yup. Topfield, the most unreliable piece of home electronics I have ever owned. Somehow they managed to get a good reputation when the whole set top box thing started, I guess.

      • know which ones that do? I usually see that they only have a 7 day EPG. Only seen FOXTEL boxes be able to record a series properly.

        • The 7100HD+, the 7160 and the 7170 all work flawlessly. You can grab AutoSched off Tapworld. Agreed there were some earlier models with overrated reputations, but the latest TMS models are very very good, just avoid the Masterpiece models.

  • This could be a rebadged SRT 5435?

    • that's what one of the websites says, but I can't see any resemblance (e.g. buttons, front USB ports, etc.). It's possible that the guts are the same, but then again I expect most of these things share a lot of components in common anyway.

    • Looks like the Lenoxx HDS1000PVR based on USB ports and buttons - just with a different (green) display.

'OO' have the Lenoxx (with red display) for $199.95 plus delivery, so this Myer clearance is a relative bargain.

There are some basic functional specs on the Lenoxx site (http://www.lenoxx.com.au/product.asp?SKU=HDS1000PVR) but the links to more detail - like the operator's manual - don't work.

  • Anyone know what hard drive is inside this, and if it can be removed for use in a computer?

    NAH… ONLY KIDDING GUYS :-D

    • Heh it might be a noobish question but I would like to know if you can do a cold swap of a HD ? ie basic format BUT without the software on it that actually drives the device

      • +1

No idea on this particular device, but some general comments. I assume you mean using 2 different drives (one supplied, one additional), or to steal the 1TB for use elsewhere and stick a smaller old one in there instead…

Most of these boxes hold the "software" as a form of firmware that you flash to the machine. They often have a strange directory structure and odd-ish semi-Linux operating systems. All that is set up during the initialisation process, and that usually happens when you load a "blank drive".

Sometimes automatic (in NAS and Media Players) but often this is quite complex, and/or you have to get specially "drive creating" software from the manufacturer. I have a Buffalo NAS here that was a bitch of a thing to put a bigger drive into.
